Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mine has cover for refund of lift pass in case of injury. Pretty standard in season insurance- hopefully yours can cover you. Boo hiss to injury Mad

Not on mine unfortunately. Definitely boo hiss. I've got 3 weeks of friends staying between now and the middle of March, where I have to sit at home in the chalet while they're all out and about - and I can't get my TV to work either. I'll go bonkers!

Oh @noggy, that's all a bit rubbish. I know nothing about seasonal lift passes, but is it transferable? Could your friends use it, or a Snowhead buy it perhaps?

@noggy, you should be able to legally sell it on. Have a chat with the lift offices but I know a few people who have officially transferred their pass.

@noggy, I think that @MeMyselfandI, is right about legally transferring it. It also seems that a lot depends on who you get to talk to at the lift office as some of them are more amenable than others. Best of luck anyway this morning when you have your injury looked at.

@noggy, very sorry to hear about your injury, that's truly miserable. What happened? (not just morbid curiosity, I had a meniscus not repaired but trimmed, and my knee is not great, frankly).

As for the pass, the lift offices will never normally refund, that's always down to insurance.

@pam w, You're correct - it was trimmed rather than repaired. I had toodled around the top of Pleney on the beginner slopes the day before to try the knee out - and although I was nervous on it, the knee itself caused no big discomfort. On Monday I did more ore less the same, and was going to go a little further afield, but visibility wasn't great, and my dear son had previously 'borrowed' my smart Oakley Airbrake goggles, but when I went to change the lens to a HI Yellow, I discovered he had put a different lens in the bag so it wouldn't fit. So I decided to head for home, and not risk it. As I passed the Pleney gondola station, my friend suggested I downloaded on that, but I decided to man up and head back on Piste B. All was fine until I was approaching the bottom station, probably no more than 75 M to go, and for some reason (probably because of tired legs due to 6 weeks of enforced laziness), I caught an edge and down I went on the bad leg. Fell and twisted and landed on it at no great speed, but it was agony! And that was that. No broken bones, but a lot of bruised and stretched ligaments and muscles. Knee swelled up like a balloon. I have a nasty feeling I've done some more damage to the meniscus, but we'll see what an MRI shows in 10 days time.

@noggy, oh dear, what a sad story. I'm an inveterate "downloader" I'm afraid, when I'm tired or snow down low is scrobbly. Your insurance will be paying for the MRI presumably? Did they know about the meniscus job? Ask them about the lift pass. Are you going to stay out in Morzine.

My meniscus trim was early November and I did a lot of work on the muscles afterwards. They are fine, I think, and the orthopod said ligaments looked good, but the knee feels a bit touchy and vulnerable - it's definitely not right. Skiing on well pisted runs, even at reasonable speed, has been OK though I find myself favouring the good knee. I am not going to be out in piles of new snow and no vis, that's for sure.

Lots of ice! Some of it on the knee, some in the gin.

I'm coming out again on Saturday with a big group of friends. It's company BUPA paying for the MRI, but the travel insurance probably won't pay for French costs because I didn't inform them I had a pre-existing condition. And if I had told them they wouldn't pay anyway. So I'll put it all down to experience. It sounds as if your knee is about the same condition as mine was. Actually my 'other' knee (I had a meniscus trim on that 5 years ago) was giving me more grief than the bad 'un, until I fell. Still, a well stocked wine store, and a few visits to Bec Jaune will keep my spirits high.

What you need to do @noggy after a menisectomy is to accept that it won't feel right for about a year. Ski gently with a support and let your confidence grow. Over the summer, get excited as your op has clearly been a success and knee will be good for skiing properly. Fracture your (other) ankle badly just before the ski season and then be amazed at how your 'poorly' knee is coping with taking all your body weight for 6 weeks and beyond. Worked for my left knee Laughing

Seriously, I fell very heavily onto my bad knee 6 months after my arthroscopy, running to a hospital appointment as it happens, and caught a kerb stupidly provided on the corner of a Tesco store. It hurt like hell and my knee was very unhappy but it did settle down in time. I hope the same applies to you and you get back to the snow soon Very Happy

that's comforting, @igLou, thanks. Gently with a knee support sounds just right. I accidentally found myself on an unpisted red run, quite a steep one, a few weeks ago and the knee immediately complained. My "other" knee has always been fine (that's probably a really silly thing to say - fingers crossed).

@pam w, I was partly making fun of myself but underneath the wit, the advice is sound Laughing I had a tear diagnosed in my other knee over 10 years ago and by the time I had the MRI (not so accessible then) the symptoms had gone so it was just left alone.

Quick question on insurance (I know, I know...)

We have annual winter sports cover with our bank account, just checked and its ok for off-piste as well, however are there any benefits in taking out the local insurance with the lift ticket? Think it's 3 Euro a day.
In the event of an accident will this get you off the mountain with less questions asked/issues?

Any insight much appreciated.

@munter, we have insurance with our bank account which was tested a few years back when I had an accident. My OH was with me thankfully as there were lots of questions while we were still on the piste which I would have struggled to answer at the time. That would be the same for any insurance I'm sure. It did all go through ok and they were very helpful but........if I go away with friends I pay for Carte Neige daily now Very Happy

Be careful about the "Off Piste" definition. I made sure by getting them to agree the definition of off piste and terms for which I could go off piste.

eg along the lines of what is permitted, I got the following approved and added to my policy:
- In the ski domain between groomed pistes without passing over any bare (exposed terrain/ rocks) vertical drops of more than 50cm
- In the ski domain within 5m of a marked piste so long as similar similar terrain and descent angle
- Any Off piste with a paid professional guide

Yes the local insurance is worth while as then there will be less questions asked and your off mountain evacuation will be a lot quicker.

If you do just use your bank insurance make sure you have clear numbers and your account number/ full name etc easily acccessbile on you. I usually have it all on the back of a business card, as my work has all my details also.

Hope that this helps.

Brilliant advice igLou and michaelminhatkinson. I'll add Carte Neige. For the price of a coffee it's worth it knowing that should the worst happen it's one less thing to immediately worry about!

Although I didnt ask for written confirmation I did record the phone call should they play silly in the event of a claim

@noggy, Sorry to hear about your injury, that must be very frustrating for you. After suffering knee pain for quite some time I was diagnosed with a tear in the meniscus and the specialist I saw recommended surgery to 'clear out the cr@p' as he put it. I had the procedure carried out in October 2013 and the surgeon guaranteed that I'd be fit for my planned ski trip in Jan the next year. He was as good as his word and I skied happily with no issues, until I fell and broke my wrist but that's another story. I've had no trouble since so I guess that my problem was rather minor but anyway fingers crossed that the scan doesn't show anything too serious and that you'll soon be back in action.

Evening folks, I have over 400 points on my PDS pass which I think is enough for two free days? If it is then can I use them at the same transaction of is it limited to one free day at a time? Thanks in advance

Hi again,

I fly out with my wife for an anniversary weekend break next thursday (any excuse for some snow!) and this will be our first time in Les Gets.

We are staying at the Chamois d'Or, which seems to have a decent restaurant in the hotel so I expect we'll eat there at least one evening. I'm also planning to get along to the hog roast at the Grand Ourse on the sunday, but wondered if anyone had any other recommendations for where to eat?

Lunches on the mountain would be good, but we're lighter eaters at lunch time so a crepe/waffle or two, pizza slice, or a roll would be perfect, doesn't need to be anywhere fancy just quick to get served and tasty. We've just got the Morzine/LG pass so just looking for ideas in that area. Ideally I'd like to take her someone decent for dinner each night though and as we wont have a car, this will be limited to LG village.

Many thanks for any help/direction/ideas you can provide!

@munter, L'Outa is good for a special meal, its on the road that runs up to the Marmotte hotel on the front de neige - and the Marmotte has a couple of new restaurants opened this year, just behind it opposite L'Outa - can't recall the names right now but we had dinner in one last week and it was very good. Les Copeaux has produced good meals for us in the past, small and you have to book, but just looked at Trip Advisor and not all good reviews there - mostly about cold food or plates - I don't know why people don't send it back if its cold - we had to do that somewhere only a couple of weeks ago.
If you want a really good lunch on the mountain then go to La Paika which is on the Vorosses slope which runs down to La Turche, although you said you want something light, its worth a visit in any case.

@Vessigaud, There is a small supermarket at the airport - go left at arrivals and follow signs to railway station and keep going on the same level as far as you can. 5min walk from coming through the arrivals gate.

If you just need the essentials for Sun evening and Mon breakfast that would do it (if at Swiss prices)

Heading to Morzine on Feb 14th - us and a larger group of mixed ability levels (some good black, mogul and powder skiers, some mainly reds/blues, and a few anxious characters , some adults, teens and a few younger ones (8+). I was asked about the 'Swiss Wall' in Avoriaz - but I have never skied the PDS. How does it compare to, say, le tunnel at ADH (or at least the first 50m of it). Shocked

Much shorter - moguls as big as cars at some points in the season.

Normally only the first 3 rows of moguls are big, as soon as skiers drop in, they think "cr@p", and traverse till they run out of room, then they traverse back again creating the second row, and then one more time before their calfs are aching so much from all the traversing that they start to point down the slope a bit more. The top 300 m is the steepest, then there are some boulders in the middle of the piset which mark the point where the gradient starts to ease off a bit. Normally there is good powder down the RHS but don't go too far right as there is a bigish cliff. It's only about 800m top to bottom, so compared to the tunnel it's shorter. If you want to see a few you tube vids, then google "derby de chavanette".

Yep definitely possible to do this for both up and down. Took my parents up the other weekend. Lifties will slow the chair too for pedestrians to get off. Price was about same as what windofchange said.
