There does seems to be some indication that there will be snow over a few days and in reasonable quantities. Ideally you would want the ground to be colder but that is the weather!

Just noticed that they have just been testing the snow canons at Val Thorens. They usually only start switching them on if they think the piles of snow that they build up aren't going to melt pdq.

No extended cold at present, though looks like snow to quite low level on Sunday. Possibly down to 1100m in the Eastern Alps, 1400m in the west. Relatively brief before warming again though possibly a brief cold spell again in Tuesday.

Oh dear, not great news. I've booked for the dollies this year and this forecast would not be ideal. I suppose we are probably duea poor season in the alps and uk. Fortunately its only based on modelling

The Met Office forecast is of course for the UK rather than the Alps and as mentioned above they emphasise that a warmer November is likely to contribute to a warmer Nov-Jan outlook for the UK (ie Dec and Jan could see average temperatures for winter).
Of course any long range forecast (they are all based on modelling unless they are just made up?) needs to be treated with a deal of circumspection.

I will admit to being a little bit worried. My track record for snow conditions is pretty bad. Even in Japan. Sorry if I've jinxed everyone! The worst part is I'm spending a pretty big wad of money to come over to Europe from Australia. Oh, well I'm sure even if conditions aren't perfect I'll still have a good time and improve my skiing.
I'm heading to Meribel, Chamonix and Arabba in the Dolomites (birthday bash) so hopefully they're not too bad for snow reliability.

Snow on Sunday down to around 1100m in the east 1400m in the west. And the chance of further snow again on Tuesday.
The rest of next week looks generally warmer than average at present before there is some suggestion of cooler weather pushing back on again around 11/12 November.
All in all not bad for the time of year with fresh snowfall topping up the glaciers. Lower down is really neither here nor there at this stage.

I saw on another thread comments suggesting some very mild weather.
I'm sure there's somewhere the freezing level with be above 4000m in next few days. Not sure it's the Alps though.
Nor clear that the first half of November will be balmy. There is no sign of an extended cold period at present, but whilst temperarures will be above average quite frequently, particularly the second half of next week, they'll also dip below and there should be a fair amount of snow at altitude. Can't really see any particular need for anxiety.

nozawaonsen, that was me- sorry! I am also anxious about my plantar fasciitis but apparently that doesn't interfere with skiing. I am a bit reassured today by yr.no which forecasts temp spike in Alps on Thursday to double figures, but back to below freezing from next Saturday.
Basically we would be best to forget skiing until Jan but once the evenings close in it gets hard to think about everything else and not check weather websites 4 times daily!

I'm heading to the Alps this weekend, so quite happy to see obsessive checking of forecast sites and interpretation by our resident experts!

Period round 11 November continues to look interesting. Here on the 06z GFS you can see the jet switch to punch down from the north which would bring snow and cold to the Alps.
Worth keeping an eye on.
Shorter term some cooler than average temperatures in both Scotland and Norway.

I have just got excited looking at the snow on the Val Thorens webcams. The OH thinks that's even sadder than other husbands who look at different webcams.
Will be looking at it melting next week at work.
This time of year is great.

SLF's latest
New snow and strong winds: heightened avalanche danger
Some excerpts (my bold).
"On Saturday night precipitation will set in from the west. Accompanied by strong, to some extent storm-strength westerly winds, skies on Sunday will frequently be heavily overcast. Particularly during the early part of the day, widespread snowfall is anticipated. The snowfall level will drop from 2400 m down to about 1200 m.
On Monday and Tuesday, conditions will remain variable. In the western sector of the northern flank of the Alps and in the Valais, more than anywhere else, intermittent snowfall above approximately 1400 to 1800 m is expected. The westerly wind will continue to blow at strong velocity.
Between Saturday evening and Tuesday evening the follow amounts of fresh fallen snow are anticipated above 2500 m:
western sector of northern flank of the Alps, Lower Valais, 50 to 80 cm;
in the regions along the French border as much as 1 meter
central and eastern sectors of northern flank of the Alps, Upper Valais, 30 to 50 cm
Grisons, southern flank of the Alps, 15 to 30 cm
About half of the anticipated new fallen snow will fall at 2000 m. Most of the snow is expected to fall by Sunday evening.
Outlook
On Wednesday, continuous snowfall is expected, particularly in northern regions above approximately 2000 m. On Thursday it will turn dry and partially sunny. On Wednesday, the avalanche danger is expected to increase at high altitudes."

adam.b, snowfall focused further north for now.
Fairly heavy snow Tuesday into Wednesday, temperatures rising as it pushes through, as low as 1500m at times on Tuesday pushing up to 1800m in the east and 2200m in the west on Wednesday.
And good consensus building for snow to lower levels around 11 November.

Good to see a decent level of snow in the main village at Val Thorens. Even if much will disappear in the next day.
There must be a fair amount of confidence in the weather staying coldish as the snow making machines have been switch on full blast and they don't end to do that if they think a warm spell will melt much of the piles of snow it makes away.
When they think it is likely to stay coldish they let the snow pile up the snow under the snow cannons then plough it over the pistes just before the resort opens, which is last week of november.

Potentially quite a bit of snow at altitude over next few days. Temperatures up and down, falling quite a bit on 11 and then again 14 November. Often relatively warm in between.
Here's some weather thoughts from SLF.
"Weather forecast through Friday, 05.11
On Tuesday night and during the day on Wednesday, snowfall is anticipated widespread. The snowfall level is expected to climb from 1300 m up to 2200 m. By Wednesday evening the following amounts of fresh fallen snow are expected above 2500 m:
-Northern flank of the Alps, Valais, northern Grisons, Silvretta and Samnaun, 20 to 40 cm, from region to region as much as 60 cm
-Remaining regions of Grisons, northern Ticino, 10 to 20 cm
-Central Ticino and Sotto Ceneri, less; or dry
Winds will be blowing at strong velocity, in high alpine regions at storm strength, from westerly to northwesterly directions.
On Thursday it will be dry and quite sunny. Westerly winds will be blowing at moderate to strong velocity in high alpine regions. The zero-degree level will climb to approximately 3500 m. On Friday the cloud cover is expected to increase over the course of the day from the west. Temperatures will drop.
Outlook
On Saturday, 09.11, and Sunday, 10.11, it will turn colder. Snowfall is anticipated from region to region."

Yes, there were large positive snow-cover anomalies throughout October (and September) but these have now reversed, with some large negative anomalies showing up especially in western Eurasia. However, if you look at previous years back to 1999 using the Rutger data, there are similar negative anomalies at this time of year in a similar location in almost all of them. I believe the anomalies are calculated against a 1970-2000 baseline climatology, so what you are looking at is unusual against this baseline period, but not over the last 14 years or so.

Fair bit of snow across the Alps this Saturday and some cool temperatures for Monday. As is common in Autumn there are quite violent shifts and it looks like midweek next week will see milder than average temperatures, before it closes with a cool blast once again.

nozawaonsen, German weather service now predicting snow down to 500m which means chaos for commuters in Munich as most of it is due to fall overnight from Sunday to Monday. Many of the city folk don't change their tyres (they switch to public transport when it gets really bad), but the first snow makes them appear like rabbits caught in the headlights ! Due to snow in the mountains all weekend!
