Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Peter S, yes it remains tricky in the UK, but certainly a possibility of snow which could disrupt travel on Saturday. Snow too in the Alps on Saturday, but unlikely to have an impact on airports, but could slow things down getting into resort. So if travelling make sure you have a good book and a Walkman with you favourite mix tape.

BBC forecast predicting snow at East Midlands Airport from midnight Friday night thru to mid-morning Saturday. I know it'll probably change between now and then, but I really wasn't expecting potential snow-based travel problems before even stepping onto the plane!!

The met office has yellow weather warnings out for it, so I'd stay glued to the forecast if I were you!

I don't think any of us need an excuse not to be on permanent weather watch between now and departure time!!! Smile
work productivity fast decreasing as the weekend gets nearer........

I am cacking it after last night's weather forecast. Early doors flight out of London City on Saturday (yeah you know, the one that cancels flights if a tiny wispy cloud drifts a few 100m above the runway) Sad

The grain of comfort is that the snowfall is predicted well in advance so all should be ready for it. We'll see, I suppose..

I've just booked a room at the airport hotel just in case. Can cancel for free up to 3pm on the Friday if the weather looks a bit more friendly at that point, else we'll be starting the holiday a day early. Hotel bar anyone...... Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Does anyone have a view on the timings of this front moving across the UK on Friday? I am meant to be down in Reading with work, and don't fancy slogging back up the M1 to Leeds in a blizzard!!

The BBC this morning just said "sometime" Friday, whilst my local Look North said Friday night for the band to hit Yorkshire.....

Cheers,

Greg

Greg - I don't think they know the exact timings at the moment, I would have a Plan B in place in case it hits at a bad time for you.

Thursday night sounds like a good option, slogging north up the M1 on a friday night is a real ball ache even in good driving conditions!
I drive south every night from J27 -> J21, and northbound is always a nightmare.

[quote="nozawaonsen"]pjd, it's temperature. Calling it a "wiggles" chart makes you sound about 3.

And suggesting that a poster brings a Walkman with a tape mix - one of your later posts - makes you sound like my grandad;-)

Back to alpine weather. Just heard from friend in Schladming that the snow has arrived, currently snowing hard and excellent powder already off piste. Set to continue snowing through to Friday. I arrive back in Schladders tomorrow, hopefully the A10 will be clear and I'll be missing the UK snow-meltdown.

I've been out in Lenggries all morning. Fantastic skiing, probably as good as we've had all season. Lots of powder and the pistes probably have 4 inches of powder on top of the hard pack since being bashed last night. Visibility wasn't too bad given that it was snowing hard. Still snowing now and forecast to continue for the rest of the week before a high pressure comes in next week. Getting progressively colder.

Hello all. I'm flying out of Luton early on Friday, to Geneva, and driving to Tignes on Friday afternoon. Would you see us having travel issues at the airport at either end?

rainman, I don't think there will be any problems with snow at Geneva airport. On Saturday however it does loo koe there could be quite substantial snowfall I resort which could slow down transfers a bit.

As for the UK the situation remains tricky so keep an eye on the Met Office severe weather warnings.

nozawaonsen, there a pretty big precipitation spike in the ensembles for Morzine for the 20th, but SF is forecasting a few cm...

Any ideas? I'm off there on Friday so hoping if it's gonna snow, it at least puts in a bit of effort.

brianr, yes GFS has upped the amount of snowfall considerably for Saturday in parts of the French Alps (and crossing over into bordering Italy and Switzerland too) and it has strong ensemble support.

Snowforecast uses the GFS op run so it will update accordingly in a while. It runs several hours behind the actual data presumably for some sort of licensing reason (cheaper perhaps to use delayed data).

There's a lot of snow in the Meteo France forecasts for the northern Alps from 19 - 23rd January.

That looks like a monster dump for the the southern French resorts...

Good news for those of us in AT that the storm looks forecast to track south

Just seen the BBC forecast and the UK looks set to get hit on Friday with a disruptive amount of snow (ie any)

But the snow isn't good all over, is it? I was talking today to a relative who is going to Sauze D'Oulz on a "lad's trip" this weekend and he said there had been no new snow there for a month. Is that really correct? He's an early intermediate snowboarder so very hard fast pistes aren't his favourite, really.

Thanks nozawaonsen, I guess the actual track of weekend weather systems is still up in the air, and a few hundred miles north or south, or east or west will have quite a significant bearing on how much snow falls and where.

MoodyFFS, Have you tried this instead of GFS Grabber:

http://www.meteociel.fr/cartes_obs/gens_display.php?x=&y=&ext=1&run=0&lat=50.9&lon=-1&runpara=0&type=0

Which is the south coast of england, snow for the weekend, nice.

Just change the lat=50.9&lon=-1, to whatever you want. 45.2 N, 6.51 E is Sauze D'Oulz for example.

Which would be:

All this snow in the UK is a bit of a pain isn't it, could disrupt our flights on the way out. I am flying to geneva Tuesday night, Like everybody else the more you look forward to it the more you start to consider the worst case scenario...canceled flights.
