Yes I saw your... erm I mean Gerry's figures on the Ski Club site and the skier day interpretation has merit too. As I say, it would be better for this debate to take place between Ski Club members on their forum. |
He'll always take this to where he will get the most vocal support, which is here of course. As a dirty little propagandist, this place is a better base for him. |

So how do you work that out? Feelings run highest for those who actually care. Unlikely he will find them here as most dont care ---- and he cant vent his spleen over there because 'you' banned him. Personally Id be very grateful if you let him back on your forums as he wouldnt be clogging up this place ( not that your marketing department would stop spamming of course).

blahblahblah, made the comment over the weekend (suggested move to après), gone by Monday.
fatbobfor me, 37 pages of stuff mostly to do with scgb politics deserves airtime in a more specific / specialised bit of SH's (failing that, après, where other esoteric stuff like cats and IT support lives).

The suggestion's been made several times here ... ad nauseam, in fact ... that would-be censors or shifters of this thread only have to turn a blind eye.
If the affairs of the Ski Club of Great Britain bore anyone (on behalf of the Bores Dept., "we understand") just deploy your boundless imaginations to generate more interesting threads on fascinating and compelling ski subjects. This is an outlet of free expression, and new threads can be started 24/7, 365 days per year. Or ... just ignore this one, and it might go away.
From a personal perspective, I can give a solemn promise that the 'endgame' is now well advanced. Within 3 months (after 25 years of this nonsense) I'll be done with the wretched affairs of the SCGB. Between now and the early summer, things will either be sorted or doomed (writing in a strictly personal capacity). As for anyone else, that's their business.

trickygibbon, it would have been deleted (well technically I think posts get moved, not actually deleted) in the course of getting rid of stuff where DG had over-stepped the mark. It would not have been deleted just because of what you were saying.
As far as I can see, no reason to move the thread - it is to do with skiing. Kind of.

Im off on holiday tomorrow and have been a bit busy over the last few days but I would like to say that I am glad that the Apres Thread that Comedy Goldsmith started specifically to get very personal, slanderous IMV, about Stoatsbrother has seemingly been removed; I have no idea what has gone on in the past but CG post was bang out of order.
I purposefully did not post on the thread; despite my anger - as I decided to treat CG as I would the petulant child that he reminded me of...I ignored him. Well below the belt, Comedy Goldsmith, shame on you!

Note to those who don’t want to read about the SCGB, and get p’ed off (posted off) about this sort of posting, there’s always the WTF Ski Club for lighter entertainment:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/325182624251298/?fref=ts
--------------------------
Yesterday, 30 April, was the financial year-end for the Ski Club of Great Britain. In due course (conventionally, about 6 months have to be waited for the annual report) we will know the paid membership number on that date. 30 April is conventionally when the Club’s membership reaches its annual maximum because the Club recruits most new members between ski show time in the autumn and the end of the ski season. The months of May to October are when members opt to either renew their subscriptions or cancel direct debits.
Over the past 12 months, weird and unexplained things have happened:
- A membership figure of “around 34,000” was declared to members as the headline figure on 2 July 2012. This was the first day at work for the new CEO of the SCGB, Frank McCusker. The 34,000 figure – which is almost certainly incorrect and which is the highest number the Club has ever claimed – has been published for the past 9 months.
- When the SCGB published its 2012 annual report last autumn, a membership figure of 30,457 was given (for 30 April 2012). The message was therefore that the membership had increased by around 3,500 between April and July 2012. This is almost inconceivable. For that reason, and because the Club had apparently been making up Scottish snow reports in recent years (the new CEO is Scottish), an open letter was written ...
http://www.winterhighland.info/forum/read.php?2,148384,page=1
No response concerning the membership figure was received.
- The 2012 annual report omitted any mention of ‘paying units’. This is the principal membership figure, because it is the number of subscriptions received (the other figure includes family members). The paying units figure has been published in every annual report for decades up to 2012 - the Club is now 110 years old and obviously has established ways of doing things properly.
- As well as publishing the 34,000 figure, the SCGB also quotes a figure of “around 31,000 members” on another page of its website:
http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/advertise/aboutus.aspx#.UYE8zkrSzHQ
This figure also needs verifying.
Since the Club has apparently published a false membership figure of 34,000 over the past 9 months I’ll write to the membership manager tomorrow to see if we can get the correct figure for 30 April 2013, before the 2013 annual report is published.
I’ll be airing several other matters concerning SCGB data shortly.

Zermatt. I ran through the alphabet and it was the only option remaining. Interesting mega-million project going on there at the moment, with the gutting and re-installation of the Sunnegga funicular. They're doing this under amazing time pressure, because the lift has to reoopen in June. The late-season skiing and snow cover was outstanding, particularly down to Valtournenche (500m lower than Cervinia) which is a phenomenal run (had never skied down that valley, and have been going there since the late 1960s). Tip: there's a superb new piste-side restaurant called 'Foyer des Guides' - way better value than Zermatt or Cervinia - just above Valtournenche.
But this is irrelevant to the subject at hand: 'SCGB Chat Forum', and related issues. Gerry Aitken ... SCGB director ... says ...

This clip on the right is from the SCGB 2012 annual report and shows the breakdown of membership categories. The reason the Club claims over 30,000 members is that - for about 10 years - it has included 'children' up to 24 years - rather than 18 years as previously - in family memberships. It is possibly the only national membership organisation to count those who are normally in higher education (or otherwise living independently) in family/household units.
As the pie charts show, the number of 18s-24s joining the SCGB independently has fallen from about 1000 to about 850, in two years - a fall of 15%. A candidate for the Club's council - Patrick Usbourne - expressed his concern (last autumn, before being elected) that the age of SCGB members now averaged 50. I wonder what he's been able to achieve to reverse the 'Saga trend'?

Just about still going. The SCGB Chat Forum (subject of this thread) has had precisely 4 posts in 3 days (one of which was a double post). That's 4 posts contributed by a claimed 34,000 members, plus registered users of the website. There seems to be no commitment or interest on any front. The member-to-member personal messaging, which was promised as 'live' by the SCGB in its magazine several months ago, has not materialised. No other developments in the forum software/presentation have taken place to engage members.
As for the SCGB's Facebook presence, this is generating extraordinarily little activity. It's as if the Club has almost completely disengaged with its online internet-savvy membership. The new WTF Ski Club Facebook page is seeing many times more postings from its fledgling 300 members.
As for the SCGB's youth (18s-24s) membership, it's not so much that it's "varying" from year to year. 'Dropping like a stone', over the past decade, would be a more accurate description ...
2004: 1329
2005: 1355
2006: 1110
2007: 1215
2008: 1231
2009: 1237
2010: 1031
2011: 922
2012: 845
Bearing in mind that youth memberships are virtually given away - at £22 per annum (almost a third of the standard £60 rate, and heavily subsidised by other members) - this crashing level of interest ought to be of serious concern. But the executive and board of the Club either seem to be clueless or don't give a damn! So long as the old gravy train of expenses-paid skiing (£230,000+ budget per annum) goes on rolling, I suppose the over-50s are happy with the situation.

But then they wouldn't be able to afford the ski guides having nice jollies all over the place surely? Their membership won't increase threefold with a reduction of that magnitude, for many even if it was free they wouldn't sign up. I am a very active skiier, and having spent a fairly tiresome ride on a lift with some of its members I can't bring myself to consider it at £5 a year, despite the admittely limited benefits.

admin, if 50 is the average then the sport is doomed, because that's also the age people start dropping off. I'd put it somewhere in the 30s and, somewhere, I have some stats. I'll try digging them out.

If SCGB has an average of 50 then I'm sure they must realise something has to happen to freshen that up.
