Glancing at GFS FI output and GFS seems taken with the idea of the Atlantic making a return in the last week of January which would mean a return to heavier snowfall and perhaps not quite so cold temperatures.
A long way out mind you and not what ECM is interested in (preferring to keep it very cold).

nozawaonsen, speaking of the differences between ECM and GFS, they seem to be predicting wildly different outcomes for central Austria by the end of this week? ECM predicting masses of snow with GFS virtually nothing?

pjd, bergfax (zamg) going big for thursady / friday - which is perfect for me. http://www.bergfex.at/schladming-planai/wetter/. I guess with the pulses of snow coming up from the south then it's pretty unpredictable how far north the snow will push into central Austria. Maybe an opportunity to drive south through the Tauern Tunnel and make use of the Salzburg Superpass southern resorts.

waynos, Yeah, crazy amounts. The GFS wiggles are almost flat though. From my amateurish perspective ECM seems to have the centre of the low pressure much further up the Balkans which chimes with the unpredictability you mention.

where? and when? I wouldn't expect any chaos round my neck of the woods, even on Saturday, it's very low season and no big snowfalls in the offing. Should be fine.

Road chaos seems a bit of an extreme use of words. It dumped 20cms on the roads out of L2A Friday just gone, but in true French style it was all ploughed away by Friday night and our transfer to Grenoble had no issues at all. We passed 4-5 snowploughs on the way down. These people are more than prepared. It's not like here at home where a few centimetres will disabled Europe' largest airport! I see Gatwick has really jumped on the back of this forecast cold snap and splashing out £8 million on an army of shiny new snowploughs, apparently their snow clearing ability is now on par with 'icy Oslo'

unlike their ability to plan for or react to weather changes. They've most likely spent the money both as a PR exercise and as a tax dodge and they'll stay unused in the garage all year around

this coming sat and La Plagne, ( i assumed you were based there,) Judging by what you said the other day re the road conditions, it would be nice to know if the way up to the resort is relatively clear on the day.
but as callum said over there you are a lot more prepared re clearing roads.
Also hope Luton airport are properly prepared for the coming snow, its just started snowing in london again as i am typing :S

"chaos" I referenced was to the title of the article (austrian weather website) that I provided a link to. When the snows hit Wien and the lower lying cities is seems to bring issues on the roads. The alpine regions I guess cope better. Even with ploughs and winter tyres only takes a few incidents to clog the roads up. anyway dumping hard right now, on the edge of the fens, so will be road chaos doing the school run at 3:30, avec summer tyres, though no hills to contend with. I'll hopefully being facing austrian snow covered roads on thursday.

It certainly has downgraded the quantities. Wagrain (in Ski Amade) had about a metre of snow falling this week. Now its down to about 40 cms which is a huge downgrade

Exactly the same in northern France, or at Geneva Airport for that matter. Even tiny areas in the Alps have enormous investment in plant to keep roads free and, of course, traffic levels are negligible (except on those manic saturdays) compared to the UK. It is just crazy to suggest that a small town in southern England should invest in the number of snowploughs and tipper trucks that even a tiny station like Les Saisies has. And still, a big snowfall will cause problems. We had 40cms in 24 hour last week and the roads were in a mess because it only takes a few coaches or trucks slewed across the road to cause a hold up. Because the ski busses couldn't get through my visitors, who are not able to ski the blue run down to our chairlift (especially as it had a load of unpisted snow on it) were just not able to get to their ski lesson. And there are always a few idiots (often French idiots but sometimes, to my chagrin, English ones) who are just not equipped. Daft rear-wheel drive cars with apparently no ability to fit a pair of snow chains.
xander89, this is low season, and there's no big dump of snow in the offing. You have a professional transfer driver, it'll be no problem.

don't get to too caught up on the bergfax forecast shifting about, it's going to shift about, you only know how much snow will fall later in the week after the event. The point is there's an active system nearby and it could result in some decent snowfalls, just a case of sitting tight, of course I do prefer the forecast when it says large cms of snow coming.

There's been light snow down to the city/valley level, but the roads are no problem - especially the big valley bottom roads. How long are you here for? Will you be skiing?

waynos, you should have seen the "chaos" on the roads this past Saturday morning, especially those trying to leave the area. Trucks every which way on the Angererberg as I drove by at 06.00 or so. It took me nearly 2.5 hours to get to Flachau instead of the normal hour and a wee bit. People without winter tyres from outside the area driving too close together and shunting eat other or causing brake and go scenarios. I just sat in the inside lane and pooled along at anything between 30 and 60km/h and pulling out quickly around trucks and getting back in. The roads were OK it was the drivers causing the problems.

Does SF not base it's forecast on the green ensemble? Sorry don't know what it's called but as norris, states is a bit of an outlier.
The various weather models are currently struggling to work out where the cold will go, and how much influence the Atlantic will have in even 4 days time.
The previous SF forecast for Morzine based on the 06z had freezing levels down at sea level and baltic temps for the weekend, and now it's got FL up at 2000m
I wouldn't be surprised if it bounces back down following the next run.

Garioch, this is the problem with Snow Forecast. What those ensembles show is a range of temperatures for Sunday from about +7 to -10. Given the control and op both go for milder then that does have some support, though the mean remains below seasonal average as does ECM.

Probably not a great deal as ENSO conditions don't have much of a clear correlation to conditions this far east.
