Not yet 7am and it is already 7C at Oberlech and 4C on the Galzig!
I cannot recall such a sustained period of high temperatures in February in any previous year since we started coming here. That said, we just had one of the coldest Januarys in many years, and I do vaguely recall seeing 17C on the temp annunciator at Zürs a long time ago. We have also now had 2 big winters in a row.
The forecast seems to be having a bet each way:
Quote: |
New month, new weather situation! March will bring a period of significantly more changeable and unsettled weather. The temperatures will decrease, although winter coldness is still not expected. An initial front system will mark the change on Friday. The snow line will be between 1200m and 1400m. A period of permanent bad weather is still not expected, as significantly improved conditions are forecast for Saturday. Dry conditions are expected on Sunday, large cloud banks will shift before the sun. Foehny southwesterly winds expected on Monday will herald a cold front, reaching us on Monday evening. Hence, the snow line will sink significantly below 1000m on Tuesday. Subsequently, the varying weather cycle will continue, colder temperatures will probably prevail. |

Had one run down from Gampen. Hard, slick corduroy, interspersed with piles of ice rubble left by the groomers. Sort of snowing at Gampen-level, but almost sleet at the village level. Unpleasant.
Decided to go back in, have an early lunch, and try again in the afternoon.

It looks thoroughly miserable, a day for staying indoors. Hopefully it means good conditions for next weekend.

Went out for a second session at lunchtime. Mixed bag. Blizzard at the top of the Galzig and close to zero visibility. The snow there was dry enough to not stick to goggles, etc. At base level, it was (and still is) snowing heavily, but very wet snow, the type that coats goggles and clothes, and quickly turns to water. The transition was somewhere around 1600 - 1700m.
All that said, had some very enjoyable turns in the trees up high. The snow got better with each run.
If the current rate of dumpage continues, and the temps play ball, then tomorrow will be epic.

A bit too early to call the return of winter.
We got maybe 30cm of new snow on Friday / Friday night up high. It was however quite wet snow. Not powder, though I am sure some people called it that. It was however a lot of fun to ski in the morning. By afternoon, with the higher temps, anything that was not packed down was very heavy to ski. The lower slopes were just slush by the end of the day.
The official forecast is all over the place:
Quote: |
Our region will experience a changeable westerly current, whereby the wind in front of approaching cold fronts will turn south-westward time and time again. There will be a constant change of late-wintry cold and spring-like mild air masses throughout the upcoming days. On Sunday and on Monday a rising southerly foehn wind will result in a repeatedly friendly and sunny weather cycle. The minor high cloud banks will mix with sunny conditions. Moreover, a cold front will reach us on Monday afternoon, whereby a stormy-gusty wind will rise. Some precipitation is temporarily expected and the temperatures will decrease. Longer sunny spells are expected due to the colder air on Tuesday. Foehny conditions are expected again. The next weak cold front will cross our region on Tuesday night. Similar weather cycles will occur on Wednesday. A southerly foehn wind will rise, the next cold front will reach us on Thursday. |

Skiing has been fun last 3 days. heavy pow helped create some nice off piste up high and some great groomers early on for high speed ripping before the hordes arrived about 10.30. Warth in afternoon yesterday held up really well.
Forecast - hopefully getting cooler and snowing this afternoon and something maybe brewing for Thursday?
Off for breakfast and a trip to Stuben

@gortonator, Thanks for the update. Bergfex was initially forecasting some decent snowfall for this week but has significantly downgraded storm totals to nominal amounts. Hoping we get another dump soon.

Very warm today, eg 10C at Galzigbahn base, and close to gale-force westerly wind.
Osthangbahn, Zammermoosbahn, and St C-Bahn recently re-opened. Presumably had been closed due to wind problems at their unloads.
Was over in Stuben this morning. Much less wind impact there, but Albonagratbahn did not open until late.

Looks like strange weather, odd that Schindler is open (or at least shows as being open) and so much else is closed. Hopefully a reasonable amount of snow before the weekend though given the weather forecast not sure that is going to happen.

Snowing heavily at village level. Big, fat, wet flakes. It is starting to stick to the ground. Bodes well for a good day tomorrow.
When I left the Galzig around 2:30pm, the visibility had gone, and a gale-force wind was driving graupel. Very unpleasant.
Mass exodus from the slopes. West Terminal looked like a refugee camp, with wet, bedraggled people seeking shelter where they could.

Man you make it sound absolutely miserable here, last two days have been great, wind lol, try ski Scotland. Snowing hard now down to village level tomorrow will be another great day.

@raydar, I have been in St Anton when conditions have been distinctly "Scottish", a mixture of horizontal rain, sleet and wet snow with zero visibility and its not pleasant. All too reminiscent of a trip to Glenshee many years ago. At least St Anton has plenty of "gemütlich" places to sit and drink beer and wait for the sun to come out again. If memory serves me correctly Glenshee had a waterlogged greasy spoon cafe sitting in the middle of a windswept muddy field masquerading as a car park.

@raydar, LOL! Some parts of the day were fantastic. Great snow over in Stuben this morning, with relatively few people around (except the queue at the Rauz t-bar).
Other parts of the day were absolutely miserable. Getting off Zammermoosbahn directly into graupel being driven by a gale is not my idea of fun. Neither is skiing back into the village, and being coated in snow that is so wet, it turns to water as it hits, only to be replaced by more wet snow. Maybe it is for a hardened skier from Scotland, but even an Aussie skier has standards (albeit, low, but... )
Full disclosure, I am into my 8th week here, so probably have been spoilt by some awesome conditions.
Anyway, now at 6pm, the snow has stopped and the sky is relatively clear. Is that it? Looking forward to what the dawn brings.
Edit: I do agree that yesterday was an awesome, spring skiing day. Though it was warm, we still found some splendid skiing on Trittkopf, Langer Zug, and over in Warth. Finished the day in Bachseite, which was very enjoyable. The dense fresh snow of the day before had been worked into an easy skiing surface.

Fantastic day at Zuers today. We were on first lift and ripped 6 runs off Seekopfbahn before the unwashed hordes can over the Flexenbahn Not deep, but light snow and if you picked the right aspects the gullies were windloaded. Moved up to the Muggengrat where there were no lines, and some very good pow off the traverse if you picked your spots wisely.
fun, fun. fun

Rendl excellent today, good stuff by Rifelscharte. Came across the Chinese ski team exiting down R1, presume training on Rendl race, they were also on Rendl in Feb., is St Anton a season base for them? I could keep up with 2 of the 6(?)!!
