kitenski, like I said above the southern Alps are more likely to see snow Sunday into Monday, as a result of low pressure pushing through the Mediterranean.

Unless all the snow buggers up your travel plans!
I have to do a bit of ferrying back and forth to GVA this weekend. Not really looking forward to it

Mr Piehole, I will be travelling from Geneva to LGB between 10am-12pm next Tuesday. To far out really to figure out what will be happening weather wise, but only light flurries forecast for Monday, so roads should be clear. However, that can all change!

Not really a forward looking thing but this may of interest to some:

It is a network of weather stations around the Alps (mainly French) and where I usually check to see what has actually happened overnight. In particular for me (and as an example) this link for La Chapelle d'Abondance:

I am not a weather forecaster but I am a professional mariner (and winsurfer / skier in my spare time). I have studied meterology and in my day job I am analysing forecasts regularly. I like this one in the attached link. I find it accurate for the top two rows, the last row is just too far out. Looks like a lot of activity over the next 4 days, and cold to boot.

Here's some extracts from SLF's take on the weather on Friday, for the full forecast and avalanche conditions follow the link.
http://www.slf.ch/lawinenbulletin/schneedecke_wetter/index_EN
"Thursday
A cold front will bring to an end the pleasant, sunny and mild weather conditions of the last few days. In the morning the bright intervals will persist in the Valais, elsewhere it will be overcast and on the northern flank of the Alps in particular a small amount of snowfall is anticipated. In southern regions it will be partially overcast accompanied by northwesterly winds, but dry...
Friday
Snowfall is anticipated down to low lying areas accompanied by moderate to strong velocity westerly to northwesterly winds. On the northern flank of the Alps, 20 to 40 cm of new fallen snow is expected, further to the south significantly less. In the furthermost southern regions it will be quite sunny and dry. The danger of dry avalanches is expected to increase noticeably in northern regions.
Saturday
In southern regions it will be rather sunny accompanied by northerly winds, elsewhere partly sunny. Only in the furthermost northern regions is a bit of additional snowfall expected. The avalanche danger is not expected to change significantly."

^Those strong winds really do mess with the snowpack as I found out while in Zermatt. 10 to 20 cm would fall and 9-19 cm would blow away or turn into a wind crust. I can only imagine what it is doing to the avy danger in the Valais.
Stay safe out there.

Woke up to a white landscape this morning, just a light dusting at the moment but as the local forecast only warned of overnight rain, perhaps things are starting to look up for us! When I went to bed last night it was still green outside and I did not see the need to put the frost cover on the windscreen - that may have have been a wee mistake!

At last it has stopped raining hereand the weather has brightened up. This cooler airstream is also much drier as well as brighter and should help to dry out the saturated ground.
At the moment it doesn't look like delivering any useful skiable snow in the near future but at least it is a welcome improvement from the months of 90 plus percent humidty and rain that seems to have endured since March

Meteo France are forecasting 45 cms over the next 48 hours in the Beaufortain (at 1800m). But they are often wrong.

I think nearly everywhere in the northern Alps has loads of snow, though at any given altitude the Beaufortain has more than anywhere else. As usual.

A massive inch, yes a whole inch (!), in Charmey (Fribourg Canton) today. Freezing level was about 1200m but dropping. Piddling with rain all evening in Fribourg until 23:00

sequoiaboard, my geography of the French alps isn't too bad as I've been driving round them for the last ten years - it was somebody else. We are buried in snow this morning. No idea how much - I can't get out. I have given my visitors, one of whom is pretty new to skiing and can't ski over the mountain yet, instructions as to how to get themselves out and down to the ski bus stop to get to her private lesson. The plough was up at 0630, as usual, but it's been snowing hard since - I hope the bus makes it.
Some helpful geography of the Alps in the Meteo France avalanche bulletin http://france.meteofrance.com/france/montagne?MONTAGNE_PORTLET.path=montagnebulletinneige/DEPT73 and related pages.

I like page 18 of this for a good overview of the French stations.
http://smbt.g-r-c.fr/userfile/file/1345470285_Guide_Station_BAT4-optimise.pdf
Maps on pages 4 and 5 are good too.
Haven't found anything like it for swiss, italy etc yet

Early days in know but looking very unsettled for the next fortnight really in the Northern alps. the
Can't see much clear blue on the horizon just a succession of precipitation events. Temps look cool enough to fall as snow to low levels though.
Could we be in for another two week snowmageddon like mid December.
Place your bets.

It didn't. Roads are in chaos - I rang the ski school to say it was impossible for her to get to the lesson. Plenty of snow chain practice for anyone driving up into resorts round here today.
Official report is 37cms of fresh snow and it's still falling.....

Actually you're quite right. The extent of the difference between those two models is therefore showing two unlikely events not two equal options.
