@shiva_71, same with me.
I will be in St. Anton from 09/03.
But I am optimistic.
The temp will go down and some snow is expected for 2 days in about a week.
Early March in Arlberg should always be fine. Especially after this January |
A long range forecast I saw a few days ago suggested that the current weather system will break down towards the end of the month, with more “wintery” conditions returning.
Whatever happens, there is plenty of snow; well over 3m on the Galzig. So, I think you are safe relaxing in the knowledge you have a great holiday ahead of you.

@shiva_71, not quite sure what you are expecting? Do you only go skiing with perfect conditions and cancel if not perfect? There will be sun and snow on the pistes, there maybe some new snow, there maybe not.
Can't see you having a bad time whatever happens.

@kitenski, I live in Austria, Im also (for my sins) self employed, which means i can be pretty flexible where and when I go skiing. That being the case it doesnt make sense going when conditions are iffy when I have the option of taking off as and when conditions are better.
Ok seems like I should be fine, cheers!

@munich_irish, Dutch folk or whatever a sados is?!
On a serious note its cooling down and snow forecast next week, right on cue....anyone got access to, and able to descipher weather ensembles? Be interesting to hear if its going to be a decent cold weather front moving in early next week and the likelyhood of a big snow dump?

@Markymark29, ensembles here (and various things all on one page just for my sanity)
https://greghilton.co.uk/snow_forecast/gfsruns.php?select=stuben
My reading of the tea leaves is something happening 1st March as the temp drops, will start off as rain but turn to snow as the temp drops. Temps may still be above seasonal average looking at some of the runs.
Then temps rise again until 5/6th when they appear to dip again with further snow. Still no agreement in the models this far out, could be warm and rain, could be all cold and snow!

Official Weather
A significant change in weather is expected at the beginning of March. On Friday a cold front will result in a disturbance influence, the snow line will be around 1300m. Saturday promises calmer conditions. Further though minor front systems will probably follow.

@Markymark29, the various tea leaf readers are not very positive. Even warmer later this week with a change on Friday to damper conditions. From then on it looks mild and damp, so rain in the valleys snow higher up. Of course this could all be too pessimistic and the snow line could be somewhat lower than forecast. I am afraid a big snow dump does not look to be on the horizon just yet

...well, the snow in our courtyard has receded far enough for some bulbs to have poked up their heads. It is not the first time in February, but it does not happen all that often. More than once they were subsequently re-buried in snow.
Yesterday was so warm. Anything facing south was elephant mucous by lunchtime, and crunch after the sun got lower. It was actually warm riding Madlochbahn first thing. Still, there is nowhere else I would rather be than skiing here...

@shiva_71, it can be very local, we've had rain in Stuben and snowing in Zurs, similiarly rain in St Anton and snowing in Stuben! I'd check the webcams if you wake up and it's raining and make sure your kit can cope with wet snow/rain lower down. If it's raining lower down I'd try and pick gondolas/covered chairs to get up out of the rain asap!

FFS this is probably the most unfriendly thread on snowheads, full of people trying to outdo each other and prove how clever they are all the time and how "dumb" someone is trying to help.
WTF is the rolling eyes all about?? Of course it's altitude, but of course it's "local" as well as in don't just assume what you see out of your window is the same. Your "locality" may have different weather to another "locality" around the corner.
See you on Mastermind soon.......

@Langerzug, its not just altitude that has an effect but geography too. For example the weather in Stuben and St Anton can be very different despite the fact that they are at very similar altitudes. The reason being that Stuben is to the west of the Arlberg pass so when the weather is coming from a generally westerly direction (a majority of the time) it funnels up the Klöstertal and hits the pass, so more precipitation falls on the western side than on the eastern (St Anton) side. This effect can also be seen when the Galzig area (the head of the Steissbachtal is a watershed between the water flowing into the Danube and water flowing into the Rhine) is often wreathed in cloud and the Rendl area bathed in sunshine.
In certain conditions some of the valleys will also keep cold air for longer (I would guess this is true of the valley around Lech and Zug) which would mean the snow level would be lower there than elsewhere.
So yes in general the higher you go the more snow there is but local geography is important too, so I would guess that your beloved Lech probably gets more snowfall over a season than St Anton eg 2017 / 18 - 645cm to 351cm, despite the almost identical elevations.

@kitenski, @munich_irish, Geography makes a big difference ime too, it can be raining on Gampen/ Galzig and powder skiing on Rendl or Albona. One thing for sure though I/ we dont ski long in the rain, and generally try to get up high if we can at first sign of rain looking for powder. If that fails then we try another area and check out webcams first, if all fails there's always a few bars to check out and a pizza to be eaten somewhere.....

@munich_irish, where did you get the snowfall stats from?
Looks like the weather will arrive in Lech more or less the same time we get off the bus at the post office in town

@kitenski, so if it is all so obvious, what then were you trying to say??
No need to be so sensitive, just take it as a spur to do some more accurate -and really helpful- writing.
@munich_irish I know all of that. Warth gets most!
But that has nothing to do with Stuben (1400) having rain and Zürs (1700) snow at the same time.
For that matter, Lech's graveyard surrounding the church can have rain, whilst the church's pretty onion-dome can have snow....
An people proudly telling that it can snow at Albona but rain at Galzig.....well, how then did you observe this at the same time???? You are sure it didn't rain at Albona too when you reached rainy Galzig?? It takes at least half an hour to get from Albona to Galzig, and if the snow-line indeed was somewhere in between, it might just as well just have moved a bit......etcetera etcetera etcetera.....Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it doesn't happen at all. But it is not a regular thing. The difference between Galzig/Valluga and Rendl: yes, obvious. But again, that is not about snow turning into rain, it is about the quantity of precipitation. Rendl is part of the same climate as Paznaun/Ischgl
