I was out to Dinner lastnight with two Bern locals. They said that this is the mildest October they can remember.
They did also say that no matter what the weather is in October allways sometime in November the temperature sunddenly drops significantly & pretty much stays that way untill end of February. They said its not unheard of to have snowfall in Bern in October but not this year so far . Lastnight there was wind from the south and it gave perfect clear skies and a magnificant view of the Jungfrau mountains from downtown Bern. They say its going to be 20C in the next few days , great a nice cold beer on a terrace, its spring all over again

stanton, yes that sounds about right, I know that last year the lasting snow did not turn up until November and much of it didn't turn up until just before Christmas, after that though conditions stayed pretty good. I have to say that I'm not overly worried, if I turn up in December and there's no snow I'll just wait until it appears

Forecast for the second week in November looks increasingly promissing with a forecast drop in temperatures to subzero levels arround the 5th or 6th of the month, plus some precipitation, so it looks like we may get some snow out there soon

Definitly alot cooler herein Bern this morning. Rain in forecast for tues & weds but no significan drop in daytime temperature.
I was up at the Titlis Glacier yesterday, perfect weather.
Not surte if this warrants seperate thread.
The railway upto Engelberg is OUT. It is a Bus job from Dallinwil.
The main highway has completly gone just below Engelberg. They have re-routed the road to an upper village road basically piling up road foundation to about 20-30 metres across the railway severing it.
It is Trafic Light controlled one way only ! They are rebuilding the main highway but this involves concrete stilts etc.
IMHO there is NO Way that this will be completed in the next few weeks.
Incidently I did hear some Swedish ski bums allready in town asking for work !

Probably snow at resort level or higher this weekend, I think maybe as much as 50cm at Murren, I think it may start off as rain in Wengen but turn to snow later, temps will rise slightly by this time next week but drop again by Wednesday 9th there may be the odd snow shower but the next decent snowfall is unlikely to occur before Sun 13th November

Hi folks,
Where is the White Hare run in Wengen?
I think it is off piste, is it ok for a good on piste, but novice off piste skiier?
I suppose off piste lessons would be a good idea as well
Is the Privat school (who we usually freshen up with each year) good for this as well???

I've been given the idea of skiing off the back of the Schilthorn. Can someone give me a quick idea of what it entails, where you end up etc, anyone done it..?

White Hare goes from the top of Salzegg (or get the train to Eigergletcher) down to Alpiglen. It's off-piste (and there are no pistes nearby). Particularly spectacular as it runs right under the north face of the Eiger. It's not that difficult and there are several variations, but you need to be with someone who knows where they're going.
Privat will happily give powder lessons.

JT,
I personally haven't done it but know about them from the locals. The one i have been told takes awhile (a day in fact) and goes down the northerly valley. There is another one but the powder and skiing isn't as good.
I can't remember where it ends up but have emailed that question and will let you know

Chris Brookes,
Nokia 3310 nothing special

JT, I think you'd end up near Griesalp or possibly near Kanderstegg, basically you end up in the next big valley to the West of the Lauterbrunnen valley, from there it's relatively simple to get a train to Spiez and then to Interlaken, you'd definately need a good guide though

Chris Brookes, well by my estimation it oughtt to be at least 6km of backcountry skiing with no people arround but plenty of cliffs and trees so I think a guide would be wise

|
|

With any serious off piste being had a guide is a MUST even if you live there

Chris Brookes, wait and see, but I'm hopeful that the area will get a little snow tonight or tomorrow morning, if the precipitation starts after 4pm today it will probably come down as snow, if it starts earlier it will probably come down as rain

I've been looking at previous Winter news updates (2003) from wengen.com and although there was snow on Oct 27th is soon melted and it wasn't until Nov 27th it really started coming down. So I'm not gonna worry just yet

LemonJelly, its good to look back at the site at www.wengen.com.
It is early days but mid/end of mid Nov onwards we should at least see the temps dropping
