Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?
What a day today turned out to be!! Went up late with the idea of testing some skis and then meeting up with friends for lunch and having a nice ski before heading over to the waterslide and going home. Evil or Very Mad Crying or Very sad

Well, I did go up as planned and then things started to go wrong. First the Mont Blanc chair lift stopped for about 5 min (should have gone home then). Second, when I got over to the Arc 2000 area the lift queues were quite large (should have gone home then). Third, when I started to ski the harder bumps under the Varet lift my ski kept popping off (should have gone home then). Fourth, having thought the ski tech had sorted out my ski problem, I went down to the Chalet Pre St Esprit and met up with
Shimmy Alcott, good to see you all. We waited for nearly 25 min to get served in the restaurant section (waste of time), gave up and had the self service which is the same food anyway, just cheaper. Finally had some lunch after at least a 40min wait, far to busy. My advice, either picnic in high season when it is sunny or do not bother with the restaurant section at the Chalet de Pre St Esprit unless you want to wait a long time and pay more for the same food. Sad

Then after lunch I found out that the Comborciere Chair was closed due to technical problems so had to go up the very slow Pre St Esprit chair (should have gone home on the bus instead with the others). Found a big queue at Bois De L'ours and Arcabulle chairs so went up the Varet with the plan of going up the Plagnettes Chair and across off piste to the waterslide. Smile

DISASTER!! Never made it to the chair. Going down the RED Arandelieres piste my ski popped off again on the small bumps and I went flying!! Who says pistes are safer than off piste. Some kind French lads brought my skis back, a pisteur came to see that I was ok (how embarrassing), some other friends came to check on me, and finally I managed to limp down to Arc 1950 and the bus home. Crying or Very sad Mad Embarassed Skullie

I am now typing this with one hand and a very sore neck/shoulder. No pics today or for the next few days while I take a rest and see how long it will take to recover from this. The doctor at the hospital says I might need an Op! Please not again! I shall just have to wait and see. Puzzled

From now on I shall stick to the skis/snowboard I like and stay off piste! Oh well! Some days you are just better off staying in bed! Puzzled

I will continue with the morning updates on my Les Arcs Winter facebook page, but anyone else out this coming week, please post what it is like up the hill until I can get back out there!! And they say we are going to get some more snow by Monday!!!!! Evil or Very Mad

Thank's to everyone for the messages. My shoulder is slowly starting to hurt less and I will see the specialist tomorrow. Hope it will be good news and I can get back out on the snow again soon. Toofy Grin

Anyone arriving in the next few days are in for a good time if the 10 - 20 cms predicted tomorrow does arrive. Hope to be up with you on the slopes again soon. Twisted Evil

Taken from my morning update on Les Arcs Winter facebook page. The conditions today are still very nice:

The good weather will continue this morning. It will be a generally sunny day, even though high clouds may be present at times. In the afternoon the clouds may slowly increase locally. Maximum temperatures significantly down 12 ° at 1000 meters, 5 ° at 2000 meters -3 ° at 3000 meters. Smile

However the forecast for tomorrow is another story. The winter is back. Some snow flurries. Mostly cloudy and cold with low precipitation and scattered snow showers to a level of around 700m. Between 10 and 20 cms is expected (will have to wait and see if this really happens, hope so!!)!! The wind dominates from the NORTH, moderate to strong. Very Happy

Only another week to go before my first trip to Les Arcs, stopping in Plan Peisey. I'm looking for a little help from all the Les Arcs affionado's(sp) in SH's.

Richard and myself are reasonable intermediate skiiers capable of most pistes including blacks and a little easy off piste. Looking for a few ideas for the must do pistes and lunch time eating stops - thanks in advance for your help.

stevew, All the runs around Plan Peisey & Vallandry are great Toofy Grin Coombes can be a bit icy if its been sunny, but the forecast snow this week should help it out - very pretty - one of my favourite runs in fact. If the Stadte is open, give it a try - usually closed at weekends because of ski club, but sometimes first thing in the morning & late afternoon. Its the run to your left as you come to the top of the Peisey lift - by the little shack. Great run & always quiet. Ourson to get home rather than Ours - quieter. Grand Col - nice bits off the side too. The list is endless...
Lunches - La Vache, Blanche Muree, Le Solan, the shack at the top of the Peisey lift if its sunny, Chalet de l'Arcelle over in 1600 if you're feeling like a big lunch - lovely sunny terrace.
I'm sure others will have suggestions Smile

allanm, Endure Puzzled Puzzled you should feel priviledged to get the chance to come out so often. It is such a hard life. The snow is still great, the sun will be back out after a few days of top up and all the people will be leaving (well i hope so). Now that is such a hard thing to 'Endure' rolling eyes Oh yes, I know I forgot to add, you are only joking Laughing of course Little Angel See you when you get here.

genepi, How long are you around for. Are you able to get back on skis this season? If you can, we should all meet up for an easy ski. You see I am being positive and already planning for my comeback after the doc tells me tomorrow that my shoulder will be OK Toofy Grin

stevew, If you want to try some easy off piste (well piste natures), then head over to Malgovert when they open it above Arc 1600. Really fun (it is graded Red), but safe as it is protected so after the fresh snow they are forecasting it should be really good. Toofy Grin

Other runs/areas. Under the Varet Gondola, down Droset or over from the top of the Clocheret Chair down the easy off piste that is also safe without the gear also above Arc 1600. There are loads of other places, but these should get you started. Very Happy

You could eat at the Altiport after/before you try the waterslide. A 'must do' activity whilst in Les Arcs. Or the Arpete lower down. Self service is much quicker. For cheapish pizza, the Mushroom (Bulle) on the piste in the Arc 2000 area near the chair lift and rope tow is also good. Smile

Hope you have a good week everyone that has come out this weekend. I plan to be back on my skis before the end of the week, so maybe see a few of you. At the very least, if anyone fancies meeting up for a beer, send me a PM.

Richie_S, nice video. If you come out again, send me a pm and we could meet up for a beer and maybe even do some riding.

snowcrazy, Sadly my knee is still way too unstable to ski this season. We're around 9th - 23rd & I know N would love to ski with you again if you're around. My snowboarding brother is around for the first week too & he'd enjoy meeting you as well. I'd love a coffee/beer somewhere though - La Vache/Solan/Mont Blanc & Vallandry all accessible for me now Toofy Grin

Hi,
I am headed up to Les Arcs 1950 in a couple of weeks. I am considering getting new boots, or at least my current boots 'looked at'. Is there anyone in 1950 that is particularly good, or someone in one of the other bits?

I always have problems with sore feets, so someone used to 'difficult' feet would be best.

cheers

fragglerock, not ignoring you, but is always difficult to recommend when you (a) haven't had that problem yourself! and (b) when boot fitting and expertise is often down to individuals rather than brands or shops. Having said that, I've just checked a 2012 thread on the arc1950owners website, and there are recommendatios for both Precision and Freeride (and individuals therein), as well as Equilibres up in 2000. Pays yer money...

Not sure where you are based, but this weekend we went to Ski Bartlett in Uxbridge to get some new boots for miniroll, and the service there for 'fixing' problem boots seemed to be very good.

If I do have an issue with them, it is the queing system: you can't pre-book a time ( unlike CEM - who did Mrs Roll 2 weeks ago) , but with only three bootfitters, taking between 90 mins and couple of hours per person, it can be a long wait - we turned up at 2:50, were seen at 5pm, finished at 6 (although probably worth the wait in the end - she has got some cracking boots and insists on wandering around the house in them...)

Have been in 1950 since Saturday. Weekend was very busy with great weather but the conditions were icy and crusty particularly off-piste. Definitely in need of freshening. On Sunday we took part in a Veterans GS race in 1600 followed by a prize giving and a Dinner & Dance in Bourg and had a great time. Today awoke to low cloud and light snow so took our time to get out after a late night to be greeted by a significant drop in temperature and very flat light so headed over to Peisey to ski amongst the trees. Still fairly busy on piste so made our way over to 1600 where things were quieter , then back to the apartment to have lunch and get warm. Cloud then lifted a bit and we went out again staying in 2000 bowl and found some better conditions on the side of the piste coming back from top of Varet. Conditions then closed in again so decided to call it a day. Still snowing so could be a powder day tomorrow!

Sitting at home getting very bored looking out the window at the blue sky and the sun shinning so thought I would share the details of the email I was just sent from some kind Crying or Very sad friends up the mountain today.

'There has been about 8 cm of fresh snow in the last few days and it has been quite fun to ski! Sad (you can really hate people sometimes Twisted Evil ). It is warm in the sun but other areas are very chilly and we are not doing the waterslide today even if it is open! (wimps Skullie ).'

I guess they will be back in touch again tonight to tell me what a wonderful time they are having! Time to watch another movie rolling eyes

The restaurant info is now somewhat out of date - hopefully i will be able to update it if I manage to get out over easter.
