Elizabeth B, I was wondering about that myself, another good reason to choose Wengen over Murren

Does "technical maintenance" mean checking the cable for frayed bits??
|
Info regarding your post
The damaged section of cable was examined by the Swiss national materials testing institute, on behalf of the national department for the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications. The tests revealed that minutes fissures had developed in the profile wires over a period of time. Cable car cables and stair carpets have something in common in that they both get moved a little every few years to ensure that worn spots do not develop. The Schilthornbahn is no exception and its carrier cables are moved regularly. It was possible to look at the records to determine that the effected location must have been moved over the saddle over which the cable passes at Birg in 1979. When it was moved the cable must have picked up minute quantities of material, in enough to cause the problems that manifested itself 26 years later. The scoring on the cable saddles was only revealed when they were dismantled during the cable replacement.
This type of fault in a cable has not been seen before. The report revealed no shortcomings by the Schilthornbahn AG. All the maintenance had been done to the appropiate standard which is carried out during its closed period in the autumn and spring
factual figure info -
Since the fault with one of the carrier cable was found (December 2004)Schilthornbahn AG decided that as the other three cables would need to be replaced at sometime it would be a good investment to replace all four at the same time. Four new cables were replaced each weighing 28 tonnes using 160 tonnes of equipment which had to be delivered to Stechelberg and then distributed by helicopter to Murren to Birg.

Chris Brookes, interesting article. So how old was the cable then, if it was at Birg in 1979?

Early November is definately looking promising for snow on the upper slopes, still likely to rain at Wengen and probably Murren though

Of course it will Chris - it always does. 17th December last year was brown slopes up to 2500 metres. It snowed big-time that night, and all was well in the Jungfrau Region!

If this is anything to do with Blofeld, then it might just be Schilthorn only. Read this:
Quote: |
The HQ was a building raised 6,000 feet above a small village called Murren, Piz Gloria was the name of Blofeld's complex, located at the top of the Schilthorn Mountain. The complex consisted of a large rectangular building containing a cable car station and helicopter pad. On top of this was a round building which rotated like a revolving restaurant, inside were living areas for Blofeld's "patients", laboratories were the virus Omega was manufactured. The complex also contained a revolving restaurant and lounge area, as well as Blofeld's luxurious office and living area. |
From mi6.co.uk
I believe that he now has a virus-contaminated snowmaking plant up there.

Chris Brookes, yep that's one of my pics.
David Goldsmith, technically Blofelds original hideout was not located at on the Schilthorn, that came about in the 1960's when film scouts were looking for a suitable location, by a happy coincidence someone the scouts met told them of a restaurant being constructed on top of the Schilthorn and one scout decided to spend an extra day in Switzerland in order to go there, as soon as he saw it he knew he'd found the right location. The helicopter pad was not in the original architects drawings but the fil producers needed one for the dramatic assault on the building, they also needed somewhere for the additional generators and equipment required by the film crew, so a deal was made with the lift company and no money apparently changed hands, instead the film company agreed to build a proper helicopter pad that would last as long as the main building plus pay for the decorating after they'd finished using the building. I think the locals got the best out of the deal as they've been able to play on the James Bond connection ever since. By the way the building does not rotate, it's the upper floor inside the building that slowly revolves

Yes, I had a pizza in that restaurant once and slowly revolved it in sympathy.
There's a revolving restaurant in Berlin which I think is far superior, in the globe of the Fernsehturm telecommunications tower, built by communist East Berlin. The interior is fabulously stylish, and the food's good.
Here's some interesting stuff in the Guardian about it:

It was lucky the scout found the Schilthorn as the Schilthornbahn Company ran out of money. EON Productions paid to finish it in return for a 3 month exclusive use of the property during filming. They also paid them $125,000 to refit the interior and construct a helicopter pad.
David Goldsmith, but im sure the view from the globe of the Fernsehturm telecommunications tower isnt as breathtaking as from Piz Gloria.

Well the Swiss got the weather wrong.
It rained noon-stop Saturday night & most of sunday in Bern. I took the train to Geneva yesterday. I didnt see any new "white" on the tops of the mountains so I guess the temperatue is still way to high.
Cant see the Mountains from the office this morning to much Fog/Mist looking a the webcams I think they got a dusting overnight.

I don't know what forecast you've been reading but that was exactly what was forecast for the weekend. It'll have been the German/Swiss forecast, they know it's going to rain so they "forecast" sunshine so they can be twice as miserable as usual when it rains.
I was round at Heimberg on Saturday and there seemed to be new snow at 3000m looking down the valley.

rob@rar.org.uk, nope I can only do it with any accuracy for the Jungfrau Region because I know the area so well and even then I can only do maybe 2 weeks in advance, I'm still trusting to luck that my booking from the 19th of December will have snow on the ground, it might not, I won't know until early December for certain

Right the here is the forecast for the Wengen area for the next 2 weeks
Temperatures will rise slightly at resort level to an average of 5 to 8 C for the coming week with the warmest days probably Thursday or Friday this week, there is just a chance of some light rain next Sunday which may just possibly fall as snow at arround 3000M, that's the bad news now for the good news
November looks to be bringing a significant fall in temperatures with it, Initially rain will probably occur on the 1st but this will probably turn to snow from Wengen upwards by the 2nd (Wengen may not actually get snow but I'm fairly certain Murren will get snow) possibly as much as 60cm by the 9th of November, temperatures will drop for Thursday 3rd to just below 0C at resort height before rising to 4 or 5 C until Mon 7th November after which they will drop significantly over the next 2 days with possibly as much as 15cm of snow down as far as Lauterbrunnen by the 9th of November by which time Murren is likely to be at -8C
As always forecasts so far in advance may change but I'll try to keep you updated, November definately looks promising
By the way I anticipate sub zero temps arround Wed 9th November on the South coast of the UK Looks like that cold weather the Met office forecast may be on its way, though it could just be a blip
