Looks like summer skiing has been cursed this year, after the weeks delay caused by the torrential rain last weekend - its now too windy to ski! It's all looking a bit orange as well - half the Sahara must be up there now.

Indeed! Any feedback from a 2024 summer skier? I am considering going from Paris this weekend.

Well summer seems to have arrived on the Mountains. I’m watching from afar but one or two interesting items have cropped up:
The big car park building top side of Val Claret is ongoing but rumour has it that it will be another 2 years before completion.
3 of the pylons for the new Marais chairlift are in.
Divers have been into the proglacial lake beneath where the Rossolin T bar was. They are trying to ascertain its size and the threat to the village if it were to release suddenly, perhaps Club Med will become a waterfront property albeit briefly.
There are projections for the lifts on the glacier in 2030. It was a tiny map but basically the Cable Car and Vanoise as far as I could tell.
In breaking news the Council have voted not to renew the contract with Compagnie des Alpes from 2026 for running STGM believing they can do it better in house and keep more money in the Valley. We shall see. There’s a U Tube stream of a presentation on Monday.
That’s it for now.

Great, thanks for the update @chocksaway.
That could be disappointing if the new car park does take that long - it was promised for the coming season. Better news at least on Marais. I could see on the webcams that it's quite a lake now on the Rossolin plateau - I don't rate Cocorico's chances either if it does breach! And as regards glacier lifts, I got the sense when they took down Champagny and Rossolin (before they were in danger of falling down) that we are definitely now into "managed decline".
Friends who work for STGM were also doubtful that CdA would keep the contract so that comes as no surprise. But the way you phrase it @chocksaway, do you expect STGM to remain a going concern, but a new management team being put together to run it in place of CdA?

The glacier is looking in much better shape this summer compared to last.
Cocoricos terrace was being dug up last week when we went to Val Claret, it looked like they were working on drainage
We had planned to hike up towards the new Marias lift to have a look but a helicopter was shuttling equipment up and due to the dry weather the dust was too high, they seemed to be spraying the bike tracks to help.

@bobski62, It looks to be described as a ‘local public company’. The staff will transfer in resort. They will also have to establish the functions that CdA HQ provided, HR, IT, legal etc. I suspect we will see a rebranding and another addition to the acronym soup of Tignes Lift Companies over the years.
I think STGM was the first CdA ski resort. Val didn’t join until the late noughties when their lift co was allegedly just about bankrupt, a lot of which was to do with the very expensive glory project of the Olympic Gondola.

That would be very sad if it happened and European ski resorts started to suffer the same fate as their North American counterparts.
I don't mind multi-resort localised to a particular area, e.g. Skistar in Norway/Sweden. However I am very anti having large multi-continent-multi-resort passes in which a buyer is encouraged to travel large distances from their base (presumably via airline) to get to other resorts tacked onto their lift pass. It goes completely against the ski-flight-free ethos.

@Rob Mackley, We will see!! But why Tignes handed the parking concession to Indinogo for 30 years flies in the face of this initiative. But then it’s a different Mairie.
On the lifts there has already been some chuntering from next door about the future and the renegotiation of the split of receipts.
As for selling out to a big American company, I don’t see it in the near future. The land above which we ski is owned by a multiplicity of parties, the ski patrol is independent of the lift co etc, from what I see the Vail style operations want to own the lot.

I’m about to pull the trigger on some accommodation for March next year. I’ve been to Tignes a few times before and I love it but I’m tempted to change it up and stay in Val D’Isere this time. Can I get opinions on whether the food and drink costs in the town of VD is more expensive than Tignes? Are there a few reasonably priced pub style food places like there are in Tignes?
Thanks in advance.

@sbooker, My son and family stayed in Val d' and Tignes last season. They found Val noticeably more expensive than Tignes. But for context, they're Tignes regulars, and with 2 tired and hungry youngsters in tow, it's not as easy to spend time travelling across town because venue "A" might cheaper than venue "B", which is on your doorstep. The main draw was easy access to the beginner progression area (and cafe) at the top of Solaise, and the kids really did benefit from that.
We stay in Lavachet, and there is a good and varied choice of resto's and bars close by, including our "go to" haunt, the QDC.

@GeorgeVII, My impression is that I also just find Tignes easier to get where you want.
I know the bus goes right thru the middle of Val, with the tunnel detour to Solaise etc, but it's just that much bigger it can be a lot of faffing about.
I always find I get off the bus in Tignes, walk a minute or two and I'm at my destination (unless you are walking to The Farm, of course !)

@GeorgeVII, I thought someone (Chocksaway?) said QDC was closing at the end of last season?

@Judwin, The QDC has had more ‘final tours’ than Status Quo. I am happy to report it will be operating this year, as for 25/6 it depends on the permissions for the Grand Project in Lavachet (which had had more false dawns than HS2!).

@chocksaway, Great thanks - done all of the other "recommended" places in Val/Tignes but never got to QDC. Hopefully this winter.

@sbooker, also The Garage. I thought this was going to close but was certainly open over the summer.
Not so much if a 'pub' vibe but there is also the Roxy Café at the back of the Roxy /Quicksilver shop which does things like burgers, wraps, shakes etc.

@GreenDay, I would agree. 2 of the longest walks I undertake for a beverage are probably up the Rue de la Poste to the Embu, and from the road, via the ascenseur up to "street" level in Val Claret. If I've miss-timed a late bus, I don't mind walking back to Lavachet via the track by the Maison and across the Lavachet drag slope.
