Apparently there was a wee dusting on Ben Wyvis, just north of Inverness this morning (that comes straight from Helen Rennie, otherwise known as h11lly)
Snow seems to be in the air the Highlands

Ricklovesthepowder, a swift google image search suggests there's some sort of harness or at least car seatbelt type affair on most of them. Otherwise it'd just be death surely...

No brakes, really? Is he still going? I wonder where he is now?
Anyone really enjoy the high security pvc tape down the side of the track? You would have to build that thing 10ft off the ground in the UK to satisfy the H&S!

Now we wouldn't be going a teensy weensy bit off topic would we
Just to get back on topic, the forecast is looking good right now, just took a look at MO (who frankly are OK at short range) and they are rating the chance of Blizzards & Heavy snow as high over the next 24 hours in the western and eastern Highlands, Saturday a bit warmer then:
Quote: |
Sunday
Very severe conditions across the East Highland area. Storm force west or northwesterly winds over higher parts along with temperatures below freezing above 500M will lead to severe wind-chill. Also frequent snow showers will produce temporary blizzard conditions over higher ridges and summits.
Monday
Cloudy with rain spreading eastwards across all parts during the day. Rain will be preceded by snow above 700M. Freezing level will rise above the summits during the day. Gale or severe gale force southwest winds on the summits.
Tuesday
Overnight rain soon clearing, then drier and brighter but wintry showers will follow to west of the area. Strong to gale force southwesterly winds over the tops. |
MWIS is singing from the same hymn sheet too:
Quote: |
Friday: Snow showers; perhaps very frequent, risk whiteout, lightning Showers from time to time: hail, snow above 500m and risk lightning. Threat around 2 hours of near constant heavy snow to a low level late morning/middle of the day, giving whiteout; this most likely southern Cairngorms NP west to Ben Alder.
Saturday: Rain, perhaps most of the day west of A9. Progressively east into Cairngorms NP, the rain will become very light and patchy
Sunday: Showers, with hail, possibly thunder, and above 600m snow, throughout the day. Fewest showers near Lochnagar.
Planning Outlook: All mountain areas of Britain from Saturday, 26th November, 2011
Intense Atlantic lows will pass close to northern Scotland, bringing long periods of often severe upland gales, and bands of rain (focussed on western Scotland), interspersed by showery weather.
Temperatures will oscillate: further mild periods, but increasingly also colder periods, especially across Highland Scotland, where there will be several freeze thaw cycles. By the middle of next week, cold conditions will be prevalent. Snow will increasingly build up on, particularly the north and western Scottish Highlands, with snow occasionally to a low level, and penetrating south to summits in England and Wales. |
So as predicted some temperature fluctuations but hopefully these will lead to a consolidation of the snowpack which will then be loaded up again with fresh as the next cold spell and storm moves in. Hopefully with all the wind around the gullies and natural snow fields should fill up too.
Not a bad prospect after the cr*p of the last few weeks and hopefully by the time this passes we'll have a colder period and the hills will be a lot whiter than they were up to now.
All good and I reckon the webcams might be well worth a look in the morning (if they haven't been blown away )

Hmm I was thinking of doing Scafell on Sunday, would've been nice if the weather was going to be like it is this morning. Maybe not so nice on that forecast though...

Yeah, did Snowdon and Crib Goch in October in similar (but warmer) conditions and it's not an experience I want to repeat soon! Although there is nothing quite like walking up big hills in really really cr@p weather to make you feel properly alive...
