Hi
I hope this might answer a few of the points above.
I know this is an old thread, but I still hear discussions on the subject.
The stages in the BASI Qualification system can be thought of in two ways:
1 - The Filter - as a filtering out of the unworthy. This is the Grading concept.
or
2 - The Ascent - a promotion of the worthy. This is the Level concept.
Grading
The system of grading is like a sieving system for Home-Pride flour grading factory! The horrible lumps are kept back, and the pure grains pass.
Only the finest of candidates pass through the grade 1, the very finest mesh.
This is the origin of the concept of "Passing" the grade.
However, I for one, as a youth found that intimidating. The finest pass. Not possible to better that. I am unworthy (or so I felt for years).
It was a filter system. A "High-Pass" filter. However that means it had the aura of holding people back. That's unpleasantly negative. It derived from the "You 'orrible lot, come back when ye can ski!" attitude of the PTI type leaders of the 1960's, many of whom were ex-services.
Thank goodness that's all gone.
Level
The Level system is a progression of steps up or levels. This is a positive thing. You are encouraged to climb the next step.
This is a different metaphor. So you must compare Grade 1 (mesh filter) with Level 4 (Step on the stairway).
BASI-1 is the old name for the finest mesh.
BASI-L1 is the new name for the foundation level. The first step. It's still important to include the "L" for Level.
Number Index
However a set of numbers is only an index to look up the actual meaning. So a descriptive name is essential.
4-ISTD Teacher "Full Diplom" - International Ski Teacher Diploma. "Finished their BASI" is another way of putting it.
3-ISIA Teacher - International Ski Instructors Association
2-Instructor Level 2 - An Instructor at a ski school.
1-Instructor Level 1 - The foundation or Trainee level.
Instructor or Teacher?
The name instructor matches the teaching style of the level. It is directive. The instructor issues instructions and the pupil carries them out.
The name Teacher matches a more mature, experienced teaching style, more inclusive, exploratory. Not so much command-style.
A coach is not usually doing teaching as such. The coach works with fully acquired skiers and the job is to improve performance.
The Badge. The BASI Brand
The BASI Badge. In France, the convention is not to wear a badge unless it's an "Full Diplom" medallion. So many BASI Instructors and Teachers don't wear their badge unless it's the Top Gong. This is probably wise, unless you are under-qualified for the level you ski at.
Wearing an ISIA badge is OK, but the French haven't a clue what it is.
However, I think the wearing of your BASI badge is a respectful thing to do to let your customers know that you are qualified at some level. It shows the brand. However, with the badge goes responsibility to ski at the highest level you can manage all the time.
After all - you are supposed to be a pro - not a bum!
(If you found this helpful, please indicate).
Note on balanced content: I have used Ski here. Mainly because I know more about skiing. The levels are the same for Snowboarding, but the content of the exams can be different. In France for instance, a Snowboard qualification was only available for Fully Qualified Ski Teachers.
Good Luck on the quest...

SkiPresto, Interesting post and good explanation of the grading situation. You have the same view of 'instruction' and 'teaching' that I do whereas I've been slated for this view on this forum before! Personally I hate the term ISTD - too many jokes thank you. I like being a Grade 1! However, I haven't worn my badge for years, mainly because they kept breaking and I was fed up with paying for new ones!!!
