The Illiwap App has just pinged with a load of pictures (not for the claustrophobic) of the survey being done inside the Grand Motte Glacier to determine the effects of its rapid melting and the potential for more proglacial lakes. This is part of a long term survey, which is quite reassuring from a safety POV.
The survey company have only posted one picture on their website but there is a detailed explanation (translation service required!) of what has been going on in the bowels of the Glacier:
https://cordata.fr/missions/plongee-dans-les-entrailles-du-glacier-de-la-grande-motte/
Illiwap is a French App which collects and disseminates 'Messages from the Mairie', which can include safety stuff like road closures etc. Once downloaded you have to select the Commune(s) you wish to receive. Not all Communes do - last time I looked Val D'Isere hadn't joined.

The melt of the Grande Motte glacier this century has been astonishing to watch.
Used to be skiable 365 days a year.
Now it's about the size of an icecube.

The photos after the adverts at the bottom of the link should make people think twice if going against local advice when skiing up there!

Flushed with success at negotiating the owners lift pas site I have had a look at the weather. None of the forecasts have any snow (or indeed precipitation of any kind) for the next fortnight and the freezing level will be above the Motte next week (even at night). It then shows signs of cooling down a bit in w/c 11 Nov. In that week there is quite a lot of activity over the Med, I suppose we could hope it moves north.
Also looking at the Tov webcam the new outdoor terrace with tables has been finished, nice place for a picnic. But I wouldnt want the job of clearing the snow off it.

Hi folks, hope you're having a good Saturday! Does anyone know of any Tignes-locals I might be able to pay to store a ski bag through February?
I'll be in Val Claret for January and again in March-April but am going to be out of town between Feb 02 and Mar 09. If it can be helped, I'm hoping not to lug my ski bag to the UK and back in between. I've been told the tourist office does left luggage, but I assume that's intended just to be for a few hours before or after checking in/out of hotels.

@skikendwarrior, the Tourist Office in VC does indeed do left luggage - does not appear to be any restriction on time, but it is €4.50 per 24hrs. Might be worth dropping them a line to see if they will do you a deal.

Hi, heading to Tignes le Lac with a school group in December and thinking about a few evening activities....I know the pool comes free with the lift pass but does anyone please know the rough cost of the ice skating and 10 pin bowling? Also, is it possible to book out the sports hall for 5/6 a side footy. I've emailed the centre who has said generally they might be able to manage it, but haven't confirmed (despite two emails) or given the likely cost?
Cheers.

@snowhound, I can’t help you with the other questions (but unless they have reinstated for this season) the skating on the lake came to an end a few years ago. It was then moved onto an artificial surface inside and then dropped.
There is the tubing in VC - not cheap and the toboggan run from the Palafour lift - might not be open in December.

@snowhound, The bowling alley and the late lamented Jacks Club closed and were replaced by Strike, a night club. Don’t think we have bowling anymore, there was a small one planned in the Diamond Rock, not sure if it’s operating.

@Ski lots, @chocksaway, thanks both. Pity about the ice skating. My now teenage daughters have great memories when they were 6 or 7, of being invited onto the ice by some local teenagers to join in their game of ice hockey

The cost of a season lift pass is about the same as 2.5 weeks of weekly lift pass. We have a number of friends visiting us throughout the season - can they all use the same season lift pass? I heard the season pass needs a photo - is that true and do they ever check? Your advice and thoughts are always appreciated!

@Enolfa Kerr, Yes they check frequently and confiscate the pass if the person using the pass isn’t the same as the person on the photo.
I’m often asked to raise my goggles so they can check, my husband has even had the lifty delve into his pocket for the pass.

@Enolfa Kerr, also on the major lifts the photo you have on your season pass is displayed on the screens of the staff by the turnstiles so it is relatively easy for them to spot a fraud.

Its more sophisticated now. Your photo is on STGM system. They can see season pass holder photos on their tablets. So you should not have to dig out the physical pass from your pocket to show them. But they may ask to look at your face

@Ski lots, @skikendwarrior, just beware of the security there because they overflow left luggage onto the steps under the tourist office in vc and the steps can be accessed from outside the tourist office.

I was planning on using this facility during the day on a Saturday in January as I finish a week in VC and move to a week in Les Brev. Is it as dodgy as this makes it sound?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@snowbroad, we have a shoebox opposite and although we have never used the facility I’m not aware of any problems. On Saturdays the local police are usually around to direct traffic and I would assume act as at least a bit of a deterrent to nerdowells.

@snowbroad, wasn’t trying to scaremonger and as I say it is their left luggage *overflow* - if it looks crazy busy then I’d imagine your luggage would be less safe than when it’s quiet.

Time for a quick look at. the weather and it's fair to say the picture is confused from next Wednesday. The models are agreed that the high pressure with warm temps for the time of year will continue until Monday. It then starts to cool down which will allow snowmaking to start, but remember there is only so much capacity and money so it will be a few runs to form a base. On Tuesday it will be light rain low down and snow up above, it should be snow down to Brev by dark. After this the models, and therefore the apps, diverge. The European model shows more light snow on Wed before sunny periods to the end of the week. The US model shows that precipitation passing to the west before high pressure reasserts itself to the weekend. Time will tell!

Hopefully this is an acceptable place to ask for some Tignes-advice before the snow falls! I've got a trip booked for me and my partner in late January in Tignes Le Lac, and wondered if there were any stand-out or recommended snowboard instructors that do private one-on-one lessons? My partner is on the cusp of breaking out of the horrible beginner stage and just needs a big confidence boost to progress to consistently linking turns all the way down a slope. A very friendly and competent instructor would have this sorted in no time at all, and have the pleasure of setting a new snowboarder free to explore the whole of the mountain! ESF were very good last year at La Plagne and wouldn't have a problem booking with them, but I just want to make sure we don't miss a trick here if there's a local recommendation.
