We stayed at the Hotel Bellvue out that way once, because we couldn't get onto our 'go to' hotel in town. It had its own minibus in the mornings and we taxi'd it back post apres. It would've been a helluva schelp on foot.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@halfhand, Hidden Valley is perfectly doable from Selva. If you’re reasonably swift intermediates it’s also well worth doing the Cinque Torri and the Super8 first, while you’re there. It’s beautiful and quiet, but I’d recommend a prompt start. One year we set off a bit late and admittedly missed the last lift out of Colfosco and had to get a taxi back over the Gardena Pass to Selva! But we’ve managed the Conque Torri and hidden valley combo numerous other times without hitch.
I would qualify the above statement about the hidden valley and Super8 combo from Selva by adding that there’s no time for detours or getting lost in La Villa. It assumes you go direct to San Cassiano for the bus/taxi to the Lagazuoi pass and likewise on the way back. You can explore La Villa / Alta Badia another day. An early start should ensure time for lunch at Rifugio Scoiattoli - which is a beautiful spot!

@halfhand, some dining recommendations in Selva and the wider ski area:
Lunch on the mountain:
* Baita Saslonch Hutte just below Ciampinoi, Selva. Great food, craft beer, sunny terrace.
* Rifugio Comici, top of Comici chair. Outdoor cafeteria is affordable and has a spectacular view of the Sella Massif. Indoor fine dining for those with deep pockets.
* Fermeda Hutte in the Seceda/Col Raiser area above Santa Cristina - best wood-fired pizzas I've ever eaten!
* Gostner Schwaige in Alpe di Siusi for fantastic traditional local cuisine (share the kaiserschmarrn for dessert)
* Rifugio Scoiattoli in the Cinque Torri/Super8 area - stunning view.
* Cesa da Fuoch, Porta Vescovo cable-car middle station, next to the Sas della Vegla chairlift - great self-service dishes cooked in front of you, modern dining room with wood burner to dry off
Dinner in Selva:
* Restaurant Pizzeria Sal Fëur was good
* La Stua Aprés Ski (lively bar/restaurant).
* Restaurant Pizzeria Sun Valley Stübele looked good, but we could never get in.

@WoottonBecs, this thread has meandered somewhat, but did you find somewhere in the Dolomites?

I just logged in purely for the purposes of updating this (I hate it when someone asks for input but you never know what happened...)
I had a properly good read of everything at the weekend (although I did skim some of the later stuff where it meandered!) and it was so useful! I finally booked Selva yesterday.
Thanks for all the useful advice - it helped make a lot of sense of the region etc. I'm really looking forward to going now.
I do have one final question - lift passes. Local area or whole region... It looks like I'll need a whole region pass to do the Sella Ronda. But it also looks like it's a lot cheaper to buy online before we go. Then I need a QR code or to collect locally - I'm assuming this is as easy as they make it sound on the website? Anything I'm missing here?!

Whilst the “local area” pass for Selva covers a huge area (incl Alpe is Siusi and Seceda), if you want to do the Sella Ronda and the hidden valley, or even just the lovely run down to Colfosco from the Gardena pass, you will need the whole area pass.
I can’t help you with your online pass query, I’m afraid.

@WoottonBecs, I highly recommend the Val Gardena Ronda tour anti-clockwise, so you get the lovely 11 km La Longia to Ortisei.
Here’s a map.
If you have time while you’re over in Alpe di Siusi, the runs on the extreme right (Spitzbuhel) and left (Florian) of the Alpe di Siusi local area piste map I’m particularly fond of, and lunch at Gostner Schwaïge.
It is a bit of a walk across Ortisei, admittedly, but the bus ride from Saltria to Monte Pana though the forest on snow chains is novel. You’ll feel you’ve had a proper day out by the end of it!!
Saltria - Monte Pana bus is not included in the lift pass and costs €4.50 one way (cash only). The timetable is here: https://www.valgardena.it/dl/skibus/2022_23/Monte_Pana_Saltria.pdf

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Wow - that looks great! I will print off and peruse. I love the thought of an 11km run - I'm a keen runner, so I love giving my legs a different kind of workout with a nice long ski.

We're just back from the Dolomites. Ordered Dolomiti Superski passes online to get the 5% discount. There was an automated terminal outside the skipass office, scanned the barcode in the confirmation email and out popped the 5 ski passes. Was very impressed! There is also an option to have it delivered to your hotel which one of our friends did and it was waiting for him when he got there.
