@jbob, just picking back up on that, if you buy a Carte Neige, it will ask which club you want to be a member of. If you don't join a club, there are additional fees. If you join a club there are maybe fees.
If you select department 74, there's a club called "MultiGlisse" who specialise in Biathlon (!). Anyway, €0 joining, €0 subscription so you only pay the actual cost of the CN.

@jbob, here you are https://www2.ffs.fr/carteneige/online
NB you need a >20 year old medical certificate saying you are fit to ski and there are a few questions that would mandate a more recent one.

Earliest opening I can remember- anyone else recall an earlier one?
Glad I booked my 7 December trip a week ago when it was unclear what they’d open- very cheap flights and car at that stage.

@snowdave, its only weekends so far. Verbier?

The Bochard being open at all is a result they’ve been working on it all summer.

Not fun without the Pierre à Ric run down at the end of the day! Mind you, it was also closed last May 4th and we were not the only ones enjoying it for the last downhill of the season.
For 5 euros, by the way.

Really excited to see the lifts starting to turn this weekend. I just bought my season pass today, I'll be there in early January.
I've been to Chamonix a handful of times but never had great luck with the conditions. 4 months should be plenty of time to get some good snow!
Would love to meet up with some of you and get to know the mountains better!

@alice8217, if you are attending the @jbob, 8th January hoedown you will meet up with a quite a few. My guess is that you will have already sorted yourself out with more people than you can shake a stick at to ski with. If not, don't worry. Once you hook up with one or two the rest will follow.

“ Dear customers & partners,
Following the gale-force winds throughout last night, considerable damage has been done to the track & the electrical installations after the fall of numerous trees.
As a result, the Montenvers railway is closed for the day.
Our technical team will begin the repairs as of tomorrow morning & the railway will remain closed for Sunday 24th”

Amazing first day in Grands Montets - echoing the last day of last season, minus the snow...
On the plus side there's a brand new Tabé lift that ends slightly higher than Lognan (practical, as there's not enough snow cover to ski down to the parking).
|
|
|
|
|
|
@patrick!, I think you may find that the Tabé was brand new a year ago.

Seriously? We went only once last season, not sure what I must have been on but the change only dawned on me yesterday! More of a Les Gets skier (due to the kid's ski club).

Well went up GM today and it was.....ok
Pretty icy but not totally horrendous and flat light. I fell over on turn number 3 due to completely forgetting how to ski. Fortunately it came back by the 2nd run!
Not worth making any kind of special effort to go up for but nice to get some November skiing in. Beat last years start by 17 days anyway.

https://aostanews24.it/ghiacciaio-del-toula-chiusa-la-scala-di-accesso
First two apologies, it’s in Italian and it’s not technically chamonix.
The Toula glacier is a regular playground for cham based skiers it’s accessed via the skyway in Courmayeur and is fantastic when the conditions are right. However the access has been becoming increasingly tricky. Even getting to the staircase has become more difficult, but this article reports that the staircase which gives access to the glacier is closed for the season. It is possible to access the glacier without the staircase but it’s a lot harder, even extreme.

Toula glacier is in a mess.
Melting away fast.
Packed with deep crevasses, as it dries, melts and shrinks.
|
|
|
|
|

Bloody hell, they only extended the bottom of the stairs to the Toula last year. It replaced the aluminium ladder dandgling from hairy string. It was pretty nifty, unlike the actual access to the top of the stairs

On a brighter note cham meteo are forecasting up to a 1m of snow between now and Monday especially higher up. It won’t be powder but it will hopefully be creating a solid base for the rest of the winter.
