@Ozboy, same group, different ages/levels of car, separate loyalty schemes (hertz is relatively generous, don’t know about the others, not sure if dollar scheme operates in Europe).
Same with Alamo/europcar, avis/budget (tho I seem to do just as well on budget upgrades by waving my avis card at them!).
As I often flag, with hertz, use code 569608 and you get 15% off most rentals as long as you have a MasterCard (in theory, in practice they’ve never checked me).

@snowdave, Thanks for the code - I will try it next time I book.. I also have a Hertz loyalty card which I will try to use at the Hertz counter for my Dollar car.

Bit off topic ...
Does anybody knows if 185cm skis could fit in Renault Megane EST ?
I am not familiar with that vehicle since Renault is not present in USofA.
Also, should I rent the car from the French side and buy/rent chains or get the car at the Swiss side with winter tires and not worry about chains ?
Driving to Courmayeur and La Thuile

@Cheapski, There is every chance you will receive another make of car in the category (compact?) similar to the Megane. In general you will be able to fit skis along the Center if the car by folding down part of the rear seat but this will depend I number of passengers.
Personally I always rent from the Swiss side for convenience of having the car pre-winterised but understand it can be cheaper from French side if renting for a longer duration and renting / buying chains separately.

@dublin2, all MasterCard holders. No restrictions. Sometimes the sale discount codes are cheaper tho.

@Cheapski, I prefer to book from Swiss side of GVA in winter, for the benefits of winter tyres etc.
My experience is that winter tyres minimise the need for fitting snow chains, a significant benefit. Obviously they’re safer than standard tyres in icy conditions.
Fitting skis inside a Megane sized vehicle depends on number of passengers, quantity of luggage and rear seat configuration. As mentioned, you may not get exactly the model advertised.
GVA based rental companies offer ski rack rental. Usually, easy to use magnetic base/straps for vehicle roof. If any more than 2 people in that size vehicle, I’d hire the ski rack.
There are many snowHead threads that explore lots of detail about GVA vehicle rental. A search should bring them up.
