78 and 82 were apalling......................
Dodgy winters are nothing new, the differene is that there are now snow making facilities. In the bad old days you just had to ski grass or scree.........

@Whitegold, you've made a climate assumption, based on a weather event. |
Was referring to the perceptions the bad news reports set.
Among non-Snowheads / casual skiers (the masses) -- particularly the young (next generation funding the Alps) and old (current funders), and those outside Europe -- there is, for now, a relentless wave of bad news that is giving them a negative image of the Alps. It doesn't bode well for the next decade and beyond. Fewer will ski -- rightly or wrongly -- if they think it sucks.
On the climate topic -- the climate in the Alps is unquestionably warming up. The glaciers and snowfields are melting in the heat at an alarming rate (as they have done steadily for 10,000 years or more). |
You are arrogating upon the population a far better and long lasting myth memory than exists. People will remember the fabulous powder days of next week and not the dodgy snow of this week.

They will remember what they ski so as more people will ski Christmas and New Year than early January the memory will remain of poor snow not good snow (assuming snow falls in good amounts and to low levels over the next week).

@emwmarine, but how's your summer bookings?

I've never ever had one booking in the summer. I did have one query but they didn't book when I told them what it was like.
I stay there usually for a while in the summer as it's quiet and a good base for road cycling.

@Millom, a. My clients may not be having great skiing but they seem happy and seem to be having nice holidays.
Sure, some of them will be entirely unreasonable and go away telling all their friends that it never snows in Chamonix.
But in 5 years time it will all be forgotten.

@KenX, Enough of that revolutionary talk Baldrick
Meanwhile snowing lightly-moderately in Tignes - roads in the village turning white, about an hour before the main stuff arrives looking at the radar.

The big January Europe snowfall period has started.
Even reaching as far east as Turkey, Israel and Cyprus (pictured today):

Why do people insist on skiing on roads? Do they think if a bus/car hits them it will not hurt or will their helmet protect them

The snow is finally about to arrive in the European Alps.
Chamonix, France, is currently forecasting 100-200cm of fresh snowfall in the first half of January 2016.
After a very dry December, a very snowy January will cause all kinds of chaos |
Okay, Chamonix has seen around 150-200cm of fresh snowfall up top in the past 10 days. La Plagne about 100-150cm. Saas Fee around 80-100cm.
It has been good (above 2500m). It is about to get better.
Chamonix is currently forecasting 300-400cm in the next 2 weeks.

My point is that anyone can post stuff like that, but without a link to the (hopefully authoritative) source, it's just another worthless internet rumour.

@telford_mike, all the forecasts seem to be coming to that kind of conclusion. I'd ignore the precise numbers, but at altitude there is the potential for very heavy snow, and the area around Mt Blanc seems to be the focus for the heaviest snow. Too much over a few days, IMO, especially with the high wind which is also forecast.

Not querying the forecast, just the propensity of some to post the stuff with no supporting evidence whatsoever

@telford_mike, yes, agree, I lend him no credibility. But Noza has been trending to heavy snow over the next few days for some time now, so that's good enough for me...

As I noted in the weather thread Chamonix meteo are forecasting 65 - 95 cms at 1800m between now and Tuesday night. Lull Wednesday (phew....possibly some sun) then more snow (but no numbers) on Thursday. Their forecasts were commended to me by a local ski instructor who was also a Chamonix guide.

For me it's not so much the evidence base thats important (all of that is publicly available and anyone can look at it), it's the nuance of his commentary on the likely trends which is genuinely helpful. He makes no sweeping generalisations and he gives due concern given to the inherent uncertainty of mountain weather forecasting. Therefore what he says is actually useful for me when I'm in the Alps. WG just writes tabloid headlines. Pointless because the headlines are too often wrong for many people/locations.
