Just booked a week in Deux Alpes at the end of January!
Nothing spectacular, just the average catered chalet holiday

Wohoo! The coming season is shaping up nicely...
- 16 days Tahoe & Utah Xmas and New Year.
- Megeve for 4 days on the work trip end of January
- Chamonix for 4 days with clients mid March
- 2 x long weekends to see friends living in Morzine
- 1 week in Austria (resort tbc) for the annual mates trip
36 days! And only 7 days taken from next year's holiday allowance...
Very, very spoiled. Mind you, will have a long way to go to beat last year's full season on the slopes

Harry Flashman, do you have to pay tax in the work trips? Benefit in kind?

Filthyphil30k, only if declared as a benefit. If it were me id put it down as business and claim any travel on expenses against my company

PaulC1984, I agree, but it is possible that HM tax man might view it as a perk.

It's client entertainment/being entertained. We have rules on how much we can accept from counterparties, so I will pay for the trip I guest on - company will do flights, I will do everything else except some dinners etc. But I don't have to take any holiday...which is the big one for me.
HMRC are pretty aware of this sort of thing - I work for a pretty reputable financial institution, and all business expenses are detailed and declared against corporation tax...

I imagine a builder might find it harder to explain why a client needed 4 days skiing to make a decision.
I always wonder about all the corporate tickets to Wimbledon etc, nice tax free perk if you can get it.

Filthyphil30k, that depends - I maybe looking to build in the alps

PaulC1984, and that would be fine. But if you builder had just been awarded a contract to build a power station and you were the finance company behind the deal it might look iffy?

No - genuinely a good question, and companies (especially in the financial services/City space, where we are) have to be very careful.
Not just tax - but nowadays Bribery Act is relevant and other regulatory legislation. Are such expensive jaunts inducing particular business deals? Back in the day, Alan Stanford flew a load of analysts/underwriters out to the Caribbean on his jet and spent thousands entertaining them. Many wrote glowing reports of Stanford Financial - unwarranted, and unresearched, losing investors a lot of money. Many of those insurance people backed the enterprise, losing their companies/reinsurers/shareholders a lot of money. All pretty dodgy territory.

Harry Flashman, how true, a week in Las Vegas with everything paid for was my best "client" meeting.
