Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Thanks for that guys - was trying to avoid the Ryanair website as a few of us normally take our own skis etc, and its' £100 for sports gear, and I just have a general dislike to the brand, and was also trying to avoid Gatwick due to the majority of us living near Birmingham or further North.

Things may change before next years flights are released, but will perhaps consider O-Leary's bunch once reviews have started coming in about their new "user friendly" experience.

We also live near Birmingham and normally use Easyjet, BA and Ryanair. We've never had a problem with Ryanair and have used them many times over the years. Mid-week flights are usually cheap, but, if taking skis makes it expensive, just hire a good, new pair on arrival.

The more reliable short range forecasts are showing some snow today/tomorrow, 10-15cm possibly. Longer term there are hints that this weekend in to next week 'might' bring some more and who knows after that.

I have everyone in our group doing snow dances before bed, so hopefully by the 25th Jan it'll be a different picture!

I looked this morning as well and thought the same, it looks like the end of April!

Still plenty of time for more snow though.

5 weeks on Sat, toooo long to wait! It had better snow by then lol

HoneyBunny, Must be a matter of minutes before the weather system hit Saalbach now, be nice to see some of the white stuff falling on that bare ground and trying to fill in the gaps. Forecast for this weekend and in to next week has pepped up the snowfall amounts but still to far in the future to be confident. Oh, and the same forecasts are predicting temp's to fall next week too.

Weather God's, please make it snow, please make it snow lots and soon Little Angel

blondends, HoneyBunny, Are you two off-piste powder hounds by any chance? Granted, it hasn't dumped since November, and the mild weather of the last couple of weeks has been more like late March (although noticeably colder recently), but speaking personally (and at risk of being called unadventurous), the bare patches between the pistes on the south-facing side of the valley are off little interest - although they would be more aesthetically pleasing if they were white. Provided that the snow eventually comes, and in the meantime the vast majority of the pistes are maintained in reasonable shape - as they generally are - I'm quite happy. The only real fly in the ointment is that my favourite piste 68 (down to Viehhofen) is currently 'gesperrt'.
Various family members have just departed after an enjoyable week or two of sunny skiing, and there have been no complaints about those unsightly brown patches between the pistes. Perhaps the snow cannons should be turned round occasionally, then people wouldn't be so alarmed by the live cams!

TT, great reassuring update. The lower temps this week are more encouraging aswell, so I for one cannot wait for my arrival in less than 3 days

@Tatmann,
Heading to Saalbach 25 Jan. Hope the weather improves (from a skiers perspective). Do you know where I could hire Telemark equipment ? I would probably be looking to hire Alpine Skis a few days an change to Tele for a few days.

Thanks in advance

Does anyone have any experience of snowboarding lessons in Saalbach?

I am looking to get the GF booked in for some when we are out there on the 25th, and wondered if anyone had any recommendations?

A quick Google and snowboard.at look a viable option.

Thanks.

Haha as you know, I'm no powder hound! However ski resorts are indeed a whole lot prettier when they're mostly white Blush

Good to know the pistes are holding up well (shame about 68 though - clearly they're saving it for us!).

We were thoroughly spoilt with the wonderful conditions last year though, the snow was epic. I should have learned not to compare by now!!

I'm going this weekend - is there anywhere that will be showing the football in Saalbach?

Today we had a dusting of snow here in Saalbach , with the conditions we have anything is welcome as we still waiting for the 1st big dump since early December. Saying that most runs are open and skiable if icy/slushy depending on the time of the day , colder day today but still warm for the time of the year.

Bobbies in Saalbach for the football for most English matches.

Just had a quick ski around this morning , came across nearly every snow condition you could think of ( apart from fresh powder ), but that withstanding the piste conditions are very good considering , cooler today but fairly clear. Forecast is warmer over the weekend but a chance of snow early next week and getting cooler , think the forecast is more positive on this one than it has been over the last few weeks.

Mountain attack tonight, with conditions much better than the storm that engulfed the event last year. Should be a party in town tonight.

Just back from a week in Hinterglemm/Saalbach. Was pretty depressed before I went, looking at the webcams and absence of any decent snow in the forecast. My mood wasn't lightened as we drove up the valley towards Saalbach and saw green and brown everywhere. However, once I actually got out on the slopes I was pleasantly surprised. All of the main lifts and runs were open including the long blue down to Vorderglem and to the bottom of Leogang. Only those runs on the edges (generally the high ones served by T bars) and those without cannons were closed. And there was no off-piste action at all. It was warm and pistes got very slushy as the day wore on, especially on the south facing side, and some were looking decidedly thin. But if you made an early start and stayed high it was far from a disaster - in fact it was all very enjoyable. Of course more snow is needed, but hopefully it won't be too bad if you are going out anytime soon.

Big Dave, Good summary. I hear that Saalbach is in fact very fortunate, compared to other resorts in the area, partly due to the massive investment in snow-making capability over the years. It also benefits from the fact that most of the pistes are grassy in summer, rather than rocky, so they remain skiable even when snow is thin on the ground. So far this season we've found that the quality of the snow, rather than the quantity is the issue, and, (as on-piste skiers) with the vast majority of pistes open, we haven't felt particularly restricted. Colder weather and snow is forecast - fingers crossed!

I must echo Big Dave's comments, looks can be deceiving, never seen so little snow off piste, but on piste conditions not much different than march last year. The chicken man above Leogang is a must, spit roast chicken and ribs the best

Warm day here in Saalbach 12 degree's in the valley at lunch time , good early morning snow to be found but home runs are starting to suffer on the south facing slopes from mid morning the old snow is making conditions lower down very sticky, hopefully cooler weather next week and forecast of snow on Tuesday will freshen the piste's up some what, and improve conditions. As Tatman's Tours says fingers crossed for next week.

just back ourselves from a week in Hinterglemm (at the Alpen Karawanserai). snowHead

I'd concur with most of what Big Dave has said, the number of runs that are completely without snow cover is cunningly disguised by the angle of most of the live cameras on the official website. Embarassed

It is more like spring than winter weather-wise, although we had a difficult travel day yesterday, taking from 6.30 am until 7.45 pm to get from Salzburg to Manchester, with fog closing out the airport at about 9am and a then having to take a second coach to Munich to board our diverted plane. Sad

You can't help but feel for the tour reps on days like yesterday. wink

Personally we're done with Saalbach Hinterglemm now (after 5 visits), probably go back to Serfaus next year, that or Banff.

The big question is: is the chicken man's chicken better than the Asitzbraeu's chicken, and if so, is the difference sufficient to forgo the comparative luxury of lunching in the bottom room or the sun terrace of the Asitzbraeu?

oofaafuu, I had the reverse issue with the fog, was diverted to Munich which meant I didn't reach Saalbach until 8:30 instead of 2pm.

We had a late start to the day but skied for much of it, conditions were a bit mushy down low even by lunch but saying that we were skiing for pretty much most of the day.

blondends, The usual (easiest) route down is via blue piste 52 - the Maisabfahrt. There are a few flood lights at intervals once you get past the mid-point of the Kohlmaisgipfelbahn, although a head torch is certainly very useful. The piste-bashers come up at around 5.00pm, so the piste is usually nice and smooth. I believe that all pistes are technically closed, being unmonitored after 5.30pm, so skiing in the dark is always at your own risk (especially after Happy Hour!)

Hello fellow snow heads,
Thank you very much for all the insightful information that you guys have shared so far in this thread.
I am a lower intermediate skier and I have convinced a good friend to join me for a week of skiing starting on February 9. My friend is a complete beginner and a late starter (late 40s) and I would like to make sure that he enjoys his first ski experience. I would be grateful if anyone could provide some advice on ski school options in Hinterglemm, if you have any recommendations for ski schools/instructors (I understand that the nearest schools close to our accommodation at Hotel Schachner are Activ and Snow & Fun) and finally whether you think that a week of groups lessons would be appropriate for him or if private lessons would be better.
Thanks in advance.

Enoy,

If possible, I would get your chum to (lessons in) a snowdome before you go. That way they will arrive in resort with at least a basic amount of knowledge/ability, which in turn will help them get more out of lessons when they arrive in Hinterglemm.

Looking for some advice re avoiding traffic problems. Last year we flew to Munich arriving 11am on sat and with traffic it took us 6 hours to get to the resort. This year to avoid we're flying on the Fri night and we're thinking of driving a bit south towards The Austrian border to avoid traffic on sat morning. Anyone done this and have any suggestion on where to stay? Heading in mid Feb with 3 smallies.

Thank you for your suggestion and prompt reply. He went snowboarding a couple of times at the local slope in Oslo last year, so at least he knows what it feels like to keep the balance on snow. Not sure if the snowdome will be possible before we go to Hinterglemm but I will check.
