telling the Wengen tourist office probably won't do much good

I thought they would have done something about it aswell as informing the hotel.

I think that probably the best people to inform on the re pricing of the tickets would be the Jungfraurailways people, the tourist office would probably not be very interested

The other intereting thing I forgot to mention.
You have to register etc for a work permit when your in Switzerland, that no sweat.
Although Im only down here for a few weeks (hopefully less) the City issued me with a box of Potasium Iodide Tablets . ( There to be taken in the event of a Nuclear accident/radiation leak).
I havent heard of this practice in the UK (We only have 1 nuclear reactor in holland) and we would be wiped out anyway by our neighbours reactors !
Makes you wonder why they dont issue them to tourists in Switzerland or advise them to bring some

There is a Nuclear Power Station on the edge of town here , so I guess its quite a good idea to try to protect your citiizens.
I wonder if the residents of Dungerness & Sellafield have similar tablets ?

In the days when we had a civil defence organisation (its called Emergency planning now and each local authority has Emergency planning officers. Who hold regular regional conferences) Each town council had a stock of these pills in case of attack or Nuclear accident. Much of this type of work is now covere by the National Police CBRN centre which is managed by Hampshire Police. There are some details here Some comfort may be gained from those details. We are fully prepared for such incidents, despite some unhelpful press coverage.

boredsurfin, of course that assumes that in the event of such a crisis the locations storing the pills are not contaminated

The tablets I was given come with clear instructions of when to use ie; wait for the directive/official broadcast . These must be taken in the immediate aftermath of a leak as radiation enters the respiratory system and is enriched in the thyroid gland. If taken in good time it can prevent this .
Seems to me if the tabletts are locked away in some local authority bunker they wont be much use if a leak occurs

stanton, essentialy I think you are correct, the thyroid can only absorb so much Iodine so if you saturate it with non radioactive iodine it won't absorb any radioactive iodine, speed is all important

DG Orf - you are quite correct. One of the the most significant components (from a radiological viewpoint) of the radioactive isotopes contained within an operating nuclear reactor core is Iodine 131, which has a half life of 8 days. In the event of a nuclear accident involving the release to the environment of some of the contents of the core, protection against the thyroid accumulating the radioactive Iodine can be provided by a Potassium Iodide or Iodate tablet which contains non-radioactive Iodine. In the UK the local authorities in the region near to a nuclear power station keep stocks of these for (hopefully ) speedy distribution should it ever be needed.
Incidentally, a few months ago when people were speculating about the possibilities of a terrorist "dirty" bomb outrage, there was some ill-informed comment in the press (not unheard of ) about "anti radiation pills" being available to counter such a "dirty" bomb. I think the press were referring to these Potassium Iodide tablets, which be as much use as a chocolate teapot in such a situation, since the "dirty" bomb ( a conventional explosive set to disperse a radioactive isotope) would not use Iodine 131, but longer lived isotopes, probably those manufactured for legimate medical or industrial use.

DG Orf - Loking at Wengen as a possible destination and your expertise sought on locations of some hotels. The brochure says the Alpenrose is approx 10 minutes walk below the centre, how 'below', gentle slope or really steep? Others we might be interested in are Wengenerhof, Sunstar and Silberhorn.

You know it makes sense.
|
janette, Ok easy ones first, both the Sunstar and the Silberhorn are in the center of the village though if I had to choose between them the Sunstar would win every time, the Wengenerhof is a good 5 minutes walk from the village center maybe closer to 10 and slightly uphill, the Alpenrose is between 5 and 10 minutes walk from the center, maximum gradient I guess about 1 in 5, however you can get a lift up the hill in the morning especially if wearing ski boots courtesy of the hotel

Yep sorry bout that, I started it .
Anyway I went upto the Junfrajoch via Wengen yesterday. Fantastic sunny weather . Few beers at Kleine Scheidegg in the afternoon. Wish I took a Moutain bike to come down
Came down via Grindelwald. Train was packed back to Bern. You know how it is on the trains in Winter with hundreds of folk with Skis& boards. This train was packed with folk crammed on with hundreds of state of the art Moutain bikes .
WARNING.
The Railway from Interlaken to Grindelwald is Closed it is a bus service .
Looking at the river, it seems that there was some extensive damage caused by the floods a few weeks back, quite alot of the river emabankment has been washed away. The road is damaged (one bridge gone) but im not sure if that was from planned works . The Railway looks along way off from being put right .Be surprised if its fixed by Xmas.

stanton, latest news from the region is that they are aiming to try to get the railway fixed before the winter, however as you will have noticed there's a lot of work to do and most of it is weather dependant, apparently much of the railway line has been taken up since the flood and they are looking at altering its course slightly due to the new route of the river.

stanton, I'm constantly amazed by the speed and efficiency with which Swiss civil engineering projects are accomplished, I know they are aiming to get it fixed for this winter however they are very dependant on the weather, don't forget that the track is laid in long sections quite quickly so really its the trackbed that takes the time. Not that I'm worried really as I'll be in Wengen which doesn't have the same problems, the only time I go to Grindelwald is if I ski down

D G Orf, I'd imagine that more "traffic" will come through Wengen if the Grindelwald trains aren't running.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Elizabeth B, not very likely, the trains up from Grindlewald are fine it's only the link to Zweilutschinen that's out and as stanton, says there's a good bus link in its place, a high proportion of the visitors to Grindlewald drive there anyway so the train link is not quite as important as it would be to Wengen

Theres no snow there to ski except hike or heli on the glacier why are you worried about the railway ? I think Murren is OK îts the lines in the lower valleys that are the problem.
|
Not worried at all,we will be travelling by road the first time and by train the next and i know nothing is damaged from Lauterbrunnen to Murren buts thanks anyway.
The Piz Gloria experience is worth the visit (on a good day)and visiting Murren taking either the funnicular (operating the last time this winter season before they replace it with a cablecar) or going via Stechelberg - Schilthorn,on the longest cablecar in Europe.
PS. From 17th October - 6th November you'll pay 25% less for the Stechelberg-Schilthorn roundtrip, which means CHF 72.-- instead of CHF 96.--.
If you do return make sure you visit the Trummelbach Falls aswell(between Lauterbunnen and Stechelberg)

Murren, becomes very quite until the winter season starts on the 3rd Decmeber 05
Allmendhubel:
The restaurant and the funicular are now closed until 2nd December 2005 for a break and mainenance
Schilthorn Cableway
The Schilthorn aerial cableway will also be closed in November. The route Mürren-Schilthorn will remain closed from Monday, 7th November until Friday, 2nd December 2005, because of technical maintenance
