Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

To be honest it‘s a bit so so.

The outlook is fairly mild. Ensembles near to Bansko.

Here are some more ensembles.

In the northern Alps and especially in the west there will be snow. There will be rain. And quite possibly more of the same around 04/05 January (though the op run is a bit frothy at present.)

This is how WRF sees the temperatures rising tomorrow (0C isotherm). Obviously remember that the snow level is a bit below that (more so with heavy precipitation). Also in violent stormy conditions it can fluctuate a fair amount.

On other threads Chocksaway is suggesting a lower snowline and that may well be the case, but expect heavy rain, heavy snow and or a combination of both tomorrow in the west end of the northern Alps (and keep an eye out for a repeat Thursday).

Obviously tomorrow in the west at lower levels much of this will be falling as rain as the day goes on.

And from Thursday expect more...

Well I'm currently sat in the eurotunnnel heading to meribel, hoping that the traffic around albertville isn't completely insane and that if anything is going to fall as rain, it will do so on my run into mottaret, then very quickly turn to snow again..! Laughing

Been raining in Morzine all day. In 40years of skiing, has to be one of the worst. 12" of wet snow last night meant turns were impossible. #neverabaddayonthehill

Certainly going to be a chaotic week, some of the wind speeds look uber strong and really not too sure about what will happen to the snow pack (off piste) with tomorrows double digit temps.

Off piste was getting a tad heavy below 2,000 today circa 14:00

Have been invited to La Grave to ski with same guide mate I was meant to have been out with a few weeks back when God decided to spoil our party, could well be a similar scenario again tomorrow Sad

@Weathercam, it's been raining all day here in La Grave and no one quite knows up to what altitude as the lift was not running at all today. Tomorrow could be great, or could be dismal (I'm optimistic).

If the lift opens but the road do not, it could be lovely and quiet tomorrow morning.

And yes I heard it was raining where they live at 1,800m bizarre as at the same time of day and at 400m lower we were at -3.

I've just passed albertville, now at la bathie. Started queuing at albertville at 3pm! We're pushing on to mottaret but need to get chains on and everything. Although, if there are no checkpoints I'll risk it (4wd with winter tyres...)

Moutiers was closed for 4 hours due to avalanche clear up.

Apologies not a weather post..! snowHead

Do you like rain? Do you like strong winds? Do you like heavy snow?

If so...

This week is going to suit you to the ground!

http://youtube.com/v/D1ZYhVpdXbQ

A series of violent weather systems will lash the Alps over the next week. The western end of the northern Alps will bare the brunt.

Temperatures will fluctuate between below and above average. Winds will be strong especially in the west.

It will be a test of character.

Some will pass, keeping spirits up and helping others. Strong and confident.

Some will moan and whine. Undermining each other and themselves.

A choice then.

Looks like the next week or so will contain a great deal of weather with a great deal of stuff falling out of the sky. I'm off for a quick few days in Les Gets on Wednesday. Being rather thankful for the shelter of the trees. I'm thinking the Tarentaise will only be for those of strong character. Vast amounts of precipitation, temps up and down like a bride's nightie, avalanche risk probably 5/5..

I'm sure we'll all have fun.

In terms of managing expectations I would anticipate further lift closures this Wednesday and Thursday in higher resorts in the northern Alps.

It looks like there is a powerful storm coming through which will be accompanied by very strong winds. Heavy snow above 1700-2000m, heavy rain below.

@recz, so how was it ?

In fact I know as I had a phone call from my friend who did the commission run saying that it was the worst snow he'd skied in over ten years and LG was not opening, well at least first thing rolling eyes

And ironically they've come over here to ski hence he was asking me about conditions.

So as ever major difference either side of the col - yesterday here minus 3 and heavy snow - La Grave 2,200 and heavy rain

I'm just back from Turin so have a bundle of Brownie points which in the end was the best option.

And from the looks of things as I drove down from Claviere, Sauze D'Oulx and Sestrierre / Cesana etc missed out on this latest snow fall Sad

Not too sure I can be arsed* to go up the hill and meet up as it's so busy and temps rising.

We're heading over to LG later on for NYE in the Edelweiss.

*Further Edit
Just had a nag with him and asked if he were in my shoes would he stay put and not bother with the hordes and the answer was yes.

Driving down from the Col 2,057m for 8kms to 1,710m he said it was raining heavy and my name was mud as earlier I told them it was still good snow - then below 1,710 the snow on the road for the last 6km to Monetier was crisp and fresh with no rain / blue sky and lower temps.

Hopefully not too many people still stuck en route...

At least a chance to take a breath in the northern Alps before the next storm arrives...

By next weekend it looks calmer to the north, but Sunday/Monday could see this hitting the southern side of the Alps bringing fresh snow although with a relatively high snow line. Not much support at present but worth keeping an eye out for.

Yesterday started fairly cold (-3°C at ~900m) with light snowfall, but by 2pm it hard warmed up and started raining heavily to at least 1800m.

Nice snow to be had beforehand though:

Yesterday it was warm and things were melting up to around 2400 m which wass about the rain snow line in the early evening until things started freezing again.

so this morning, in the 3vs anyway, it was wonderfully soft above about 2500-2600 metres and a bit like hard icy stuff below. However it all got better as the day went on and was a wonderful day. look like the rest of the week will be pants.

will prob drive home tomorrow and come back when the sun comes back. Toofy Grin

@emwmarine great, can't say i've done much skiing post rainy conditions but i'm familiar with the hard icy stuff, also the spring soft slushy type conditions which is just awful to ski in. Anyway i'm at La Plagne next week, looks like a bit more rain at lower levels this week. I'm sure it will be fine though.
