Fantastic snow conditions and skiing today, powder and cold. Highlights were Lärchen, Bachseite, Kandahar, Kapall black off the edges, am. PM Rendl north face and Shimmelegg.

Off to Lech on Saturday 12th and wanted to trouble people for recommendations. We'll be staying in Pension Bergland in Oberlech, which is B&B only. Some tips for dinner would be much appreciated. We're limited in that we can't have meat.
I'd thought of the Asian side in Fux and the Griggeler Stuba for a couple of expensive treats. Do people know how far in advance they need to be booked? Will probably go for pizza in Don Enzo's one or two nights. Any reasonably priced recommendations for the other nights?
In terms of lunch, this might sound sacrilegious, but just simple fries and maybe a pizza would suit nicely - especially if there is a sunny terrace or beautiful view to enjoy.
Finally, question about the marked ski-routes on the piste-map. We're relatively low intermediates. Have got 6 weeks skiing under our belts. Happy on most reds and blacks we've been on, as long as they're not too icy or bumpy (but our confidence probably doesn't reflect our lack of skill!). Which of the ski-routes would be doable for us, and are there any that are an absolute no-no, or is it all dependent on conditions? I'm keen on doing the ones on the Weisse-Ring, but not sure about Langerzug.
You can get nice Cheese Fondues, in Oberlech Hotel Restaurants.
You would need to go downtown in the CableCar, their are Pizza places in Lech.

@stanton, looks great. Where was the bit where you had to cross the stream?

Cafe Olympia is better.
You will need to book in advance at least for 2 (better 3 days) ahead for any place in Lech.

@suggul,
Check out my post on http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=124578&sid=712d9f215490901c2e369681dd0c32d8 for info on the ski routes based on skiing there a few weeks ago. As for the other ski routes some are harder than others but obviously will depend on conditions. Some you can see from pistes/lifts and can therefore assess, I'd be careful with the others. For example 39, 16, and some others could be quite tricky and you'd be committed early on.

@suggul,
At Bergland, next door Formarin has a very good restaurant, also for lunch. Very reasonable prices. One of our lunch-favorites. Be advised that having pizza/frites lunches in Lech would be a shame. You can eat very well on-piste in Lech!
Don't know Fux, but reservations in Lech for dinner are essential almost anywhere. We will be there from this Friday and have booked restaurants all nights, full week.
You are aware that Bergland is not in the central part of Oberlech? Bergland is lower and on the "outskirts"
You will either have to walk down (doable) (and up!!, not so doable) to get to Lech, or grab the James taxi (stop at Bergland), or your own car. The Oberlech cablecar is not usefull from Bergland, on the contrary.
Griggeler Stuba (and all other restaurants in central Oberlech) is uphill from Bergland. Definitely not walkable, and not serviced by taxi either. To get from Bergland to Griggeler Stube best way will probably to go down to Lech, and get the cablecar to Oberlech-central
Places we like:
Ambrosius is middle of the road, and good , and in general possible without reservation. Don Enzo is also indeed.
Hus 8: Very popular, but you need to write an email asap.
Omesberg
Tannbergerhof
Gasthof Post (*****)
All restaurants do vegetarian.
Café Olympia is not considered better than Fux or Griggeler Stuba.....Nowhere near
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Thanks for all the info guys.
@Langerzug, that is really helpful. I knew Pension Bergland was a bit out of the way from central Oberlech, but didn't realise the walk would be such a problem. What about this underground tunnel system in Oberlech - would that be possible to use or make the walk any more doable?
@Millom, that is very helpful, too. Think I'll try out the 'red' ski routes first, and see how well I tackle them before attempting the extreme ones.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Fully agreed, my message was about comparing with Don Enso.
And it was huge snowfall during the night.
You know it makes sense.

Looks like a substantial fall of snow overnight. Snow guns also going most of the night.
Coldest morning for a long time - -5C in the village.

@suggul,
Oberlech is very spread out, and between 1550 and 1750 m altitude.
Central Oberlech, where e.g. Griggeler Stuba and the cablecar is, is at 1660 m. This area is car-free and has the tunnels connecting all hotels to the cablecar topstation.
Bergland is not in this area, Bergland is near the Schlosskopfbahn & -piste. No tunnels here, because this area is serviced by a road, running from Lech to the top of the Schlosskopfbahn, at the northern boundary of the skiing area.
But apart from this, Bergland is at approx 1550 m. You will not want to hike up quite steep to 1660 m. You could also say that Bergland is actually "in between" Lech and Oberlech
At Bergland you will for sure eat at next door Formarin. For other restaurants Lech-village is your nearest and easiest option. You can walk down fairly easy, but will probably prefer to return with the -very good, but not free- "James" busservice at night. (it's free during daytime)
Bergland is in a very pretty area, with spectacular views.
Hotel Montana is also in the central part of Oberlech....

A friend of mine has been working on a film project with a bunch of mates for the last year or so - here's their mid-season teaser from the Arlberg:
@Langerzug, thank you. Again, that is extremely helpful. THink I'll ask the Bergland to book the Formarin for us on the first night and after that we'll head into Lech and see what takes our fancy to book ahead for the week. Aside from Hus Nr 8, any other places that need booking further in advance than 2-3 days?
Some lovely conditions first thing this morning after last nights snowfall as the sun came out for a couple of hours. Playing around Bachseite, alongside Osthangbahn and down to Arlenmahder and Rauz. New experience for me as usually I would grab my snowboard to play in the powder, but had two planks on today. Really good fun and now face the dilemma of being unsure whether to ski or board on a powder day!

@suggul,
Think you will be fine with 2-3 days in advance for the other restaurants.
Instead of the splurge at Griggeler Stuba you might consider the very stylish and excellent Wunderkammer in Almhof Schneider (stunning traditional-modern interior, really special for an Alpine hotel), or the classic Post Stuben in the Royal (for us Dutch) Gasthof Post.
I'm off now, flying into Innsbruck tomorrow

Maybe....
Been snowing again this evening, couple of cms in town already and as I was driving back, the snow was starting to get heavier again. Could be another good morning first thing
Fantastic day yesterday, best skiing of the season in the fresh powder. Today looks like it could be equally as good after a top up overnight and sunny morning.
Highlights were Maienwasen, St Christoph under the lift, Schindlerkar traverse and Schindlerhanger, Jungbrunntobel and Shimmelegg. We were put off Bachseite because it was tracked out later on.
Expecting bigger crowds today and tomorrow as the locals come up to grab some powder. Conditions are perfect, and the pistes look in great shape, super cold and clear weather.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Two dead in two separate avalanches in the Arlberg today - one guide and one instructor.
Also a local was buried in an avalanche in Obergurgl, but was found - without a transciever - and saved by mountain rescue after 50 minutes under the snow. I believe they had some sort of training event there today, so lots of help close at hand.
50 minutes under the snow?? that seems a very long time to stay alive.

With an air pocket it's possible but it's the outer limit. There was a guy featured on Ski Sunday in the UK a couple of weeks ago who survived 2 hours, thanks to having a bit of space around his head and chest. Pure luck. He even managed to reach his phone that was in a chest pocket and call for help. 15 minutes or so is usually the maximum length of time you would expect to find someone alive if fully buried.

@sah,
Thanks for the reply. One lucky local.
I do wonder about guides and instructors who end up in trouble as it happens a lot (well more than you would expect). I spoke to an instructor in Montafon about a professional skier who died in their resort earlier this year too. Some instructors/guides must take too high risks and/or not be quite as knowledgeable as they think. I have learnt that not every instructor is alike, not every guide is alike, and that even between professionals skill, experience, and knowledge differences can be vast.
In the Arlberg the other week there were a number of people taking unnecessary and stupid risks after snowfalls and in view of sizeable slides. Lots of people just get away with it due to luck rather than judgement.
The first avalanche occurred shortly before 10:00 between Lech and Schröcken in the Mohnenfluh.
A Mountain Guide from Vorarlberg was traveling with a group, triggered the avalanche. He was caught and buried by the snow. He recovered quickly but no response. Resuscitation was applied by the Emergency Teams with no luck.
The second avalanche occurred shortly before 11:30 pm in Lech in the area of "Mehlsack".
A ski guide also buried, he was also quickly located and recovered. However, he did not survive the disaster despite resuscitation

@stanton, I've never really understood the difference between Bergführer and Skiführer; maybe you can clarify it? As I understand it both are technically fully qualified international mountain guides, but skiführers have gone through the ski instructing system with extra exams at the end, while Bergführers started the guide training at the beginning?
Powder day today was again brilliant, highlights were Maienwasen, Laarchen and Rendl North face.@Windskisurf, I've got plenty photos but struggle with posting them on here, sorry.

@clarky999, several years ago I heard our guide (a Bergführer from Innsbruck) being bad mouthed by a Skiführer from Lech as we exited Valluga II because she wasn't apparently qualified. I couldn't really follow what the problem was though our guide was excellent, but there was clearly some sort of local issue.

POWDER WEEK coming up . This is the weather direct form the official site
The somewhat milder, foehny southerly weather current will end due to a strong cold front. A few cold late winter days are forecast. Besides, the winter weather conditions will continue on. Heavy clouds will prevail from Sunday through Tuesday, snow showers are repeatedly expected, which may occasionally strengthen particularly along the mountain ranges. Larger dispersed clouds are rarely expected, consequently only short sunny spells are forecast. Bad times for sun worshippers, though lovers of powder snow will find perfect conditions. A weak, but short period of improved conditions is forecast until midweek. Then, more unsettled conditions will probably approach once again.

@saller1, check what's open, if it's very windy you might not have a lot of choice, but Rendl is often a good call. You can have a lot of fun just on the Maas lift if the weather is very poor.
