D G Orf, I even remember a season in Murren like that ages ago. I have a picture walking to the Hotel Jungfrrau with huge snow walls either side of me. I would love it to dump like that now,wow... that would be cool !!

D G Orf, I know you know Wengen well. Any idea if the Bernerhof is a nice hotel and is it well located for the trains/lifts????
Been offered a stupidly cheapo one there in Jan

Charlatanefc, The Bernerhof is a basic hotel but the food is supposed to be a good standard and it is very good value for money, no one I know who's stayed there has ever complained, I keep meaning to try it for lunch one day as they sometimes have things like venison and other specialities on the menu
I'ts located at the opposite end of the high street to the railway station in the center of Wengen I guess about 500 M (at most) to the station and about half that distance to the cablecar. All along a level road.

D G Orf, thanks fella, exactly the sort of stuff I was after. You ever thought of replacing Judith Chalmers on Wish You Were Here???

My parents have stayed at the Bernerhof twice....I'm guessing that it must have been okay enough for them to go back!!

Charlatanefc, if you do stay there but decide you want a change from there menu for a special night (expensive) try the Schonegg almost across the street from the Bernerhof, very good food and a good wine cellar as well but it's not going to be classed as cheap

I stayed in the Bernerhof three seasons back, Location v.good. Single room ok (shower a bit small). Half board food only average but things may have changed - the resturant did look better but I never tried it.

Charlatanefc, don't forget to pop over and visit Murren for the day when in Wengen

Charlatanefc, I have stayed at the Bernerhof twice (so it can't be that bad ). As regards food, the breakfast buffet offers fruit juices, cereals, yogurt, cold meats and cheeses, boiled egg, different types of bread and jams. If you are on half board, at breakfast they ask you mark up on a card what your choice of main course for dinner is from the daily two options (or you can have a pizza in the adjacent pizzeria which is run by the hotel, or for a small supplement you can have a pierrade (or Feuerstein in German -where you cook the meat yourself on a hot stone, served with chips and sauces), or a raclette or fondue

Thanks again, looks like we're gonna be in the Hotel Brunner. Can anyone point me in the right directiion where this is??? Says it's a couple of minute walk above the village, and ski in/ ski out on their website. Is it much of a hike (ie very hilly) or not too bad?

Alastair Pink, that's a pretty good choice on offer really, but what was the standard of the food like ?

Charlatanefc, Oh ho, the Brunner is the only real ski in and out hotel in the village, it's a good 5 to 10 minute walk up hill from the Wengen station but you can ski down in the morning and you can ski to the hotels front garden coming down, in fact the run back to the village goes right in front of the hotel, I've no idea what it's like to stay in or eat in though, think I'd prefer the Bernerhof purely for the location, though of course I'll be staying at the Alpenrose

Chris Brookes, there's been very few clear days since the snow and no rain to wash it away, but I'll admit to being surprised myself

The weather forecast is for similar temps this week, with rain (possibly snow at higher levels) on Thursday, long range forecasts currently predict a big drop in temperature arround the 22nd or 23rd of October possibly accompanied by significant rain/snow but as always with a forecast for 2 weeks away reliability is low

D G Orf, but its something to look forward too

Charlatanefc, I heard yesterday from a fairly good source that the hotel Brunner supposedly has a good chef, but I can't tell you weather or not that means the residents get good food

Ray Zorro, I suggest avoiding the lift Q's and instead visit Murren to ski plus you can ski back to to Lauterbrunnen from there

The forecast is definately showing a drop in temperature over the next two weeks with long range forecasts indicating significantly colder weather towards the end of next week, there might be some snow at altitude arround Thursday this week but only perhaps 10 or 15 cm next week there may be light snow but it does not currently look as if there will be lots, still it will be over 2 months till the start of the season proper so no cause for alarm

Chris Brookes, the only skiing restriction is that you can't ski the downhill or slalom courses the week before the race. Everything else is open.

Elizabeth B, yes, so thanks for your information beforehand it was helpful in making the decision.
I shall seek out the GHH base while I'm there for a possible family trip another year, where is it that they/you stay, does it have a name?
|
|
|
|
|
|
I can't quite recall the name at the moment. It's behind the Staubach...directly opposite the church. I think Gold Hill might be there when you are...so look out for a bus!!
I'll post the name when I remember it.

Elizabeth B, you're right, I've just checked the website, we will overlap by a couple of days. I can go and have a chat with Clive then, I expect he'll show me round. It would be helpful to know the name, thanks.
