Sounds like there's alot of people in the world who are pretty fixed on their partner fitting certain criteria - e.g. certain height, build, attitude, love of geographical places but the reality is than when you fall in love all of those things fall out of the window. My fiance doesn't fit any of my previous requirements but it doesn't matter because love isn't based on those attributes - its just there.
The big question is are people who say they are looking for love really open to it? It means giving things up - because there is someone you place in your life ahead of yourself. Take my friend for example - her life is so busy with work, every weekend has something planned and she's always out doing something every evening being incredibly sociable to meet the right kind of guy. She is meeting people but it amounts to nothing either because a) she's too busy with all the other things she doesn't want to give up in case he isn't the one... or b) the guys she is meeting aren't looking to settle down that's why she meets them when partying.
Ok - only my opinion but I think people are so hooked up on meeting 'the one' that they are missing out on living their life in the meantime. There are lots of potential 'Ones' out there - it could be your neighbour, your work colleague, the person you see on the bus every day. Get to know them as people rather than evaluating if they are the 'One'... Its too much pressure for that person to live up to!

beanie1, You may very well be right, but people asked what I was looking for, not what I'd accept, I'm usually willing to compromise on most things, probably the only thing I wouldn't compromise on would be intelligence

mountain mad, some very valid points, however just to be difficult I work from home so have no work colleagues nor do I travel into work so won't meet anyone that way either, and my neighbors are all well past retirement age.
Looks like I may have to wait till I get to Wengen

Alan Craggs, thats the location, as far as the person goes it's intelligence.
IncogSkiSno, Yes there have been some good ideas, even some great ideas in there but we've also gone wierd with maps and other things.
Look guys the holidays are booked, it's done and I'm out of spare cash at the moment to book any more or go somewhere else, so that's the situation. There's no point in telling me to go somewher else or travel to the US or anything like that because I just cannot afford to do so, sorry

D G Orf,
What have you actually tried? And I mean TRIED, not just decided it won't work before trying.

D G Orf, No one has said that it would be easy, I don't doubt for one minute that it is. Life is full of unknowns, that's what makes it exciting, safe = boring . That's why I try an avoid going to the same place year after year for holidays, the thrill is the unknown, giving yourself a challenge and rising to it. You will be surprised how good it feels to do something different from what you normally do.

beanie1, well I've tried a few activity type clubs over the years, cycling etc but mainly at least locally they seem to be full of single men or married couples.

D G Orf,
You should try something a little less male orientated. How about yoga? Or better still, salsa classes?! Bet there's loads of single women at them, desperate for a partner to dance with.

D G Orf, Even making new male friends can lead on to meeting new female friends, any socialising is good, look at the wider picture you have got tunnel vision or even worse no vision!

D G Orf,
That's no excuse. Anway I'd make a guess that lots of women at those sorts of classes would find it terribly endearing if you weren't that good! They'd like the fact you'd made an effort and didn't care what people thought of you.

D G Orf, You should and ladies do like aman who can dance and there are never enough male dance partners at these classes, you'd be spoilt for choice.

IncogSkiSno, I would put ability to dance high up there on the "must have list". Theres nothing worse than some bloke looking like hes having some kind of fit on the dancefloor.

Nadenoodlee, IncogSkiSno,
Don't put him off! I'm sure he's not as bad as he thinks he is, and if he has the coordination needed to ski and cycle I'm sure with a few lessons he'd quickly ge the hang of it.

D G Orf - salsa is a very good suggestion. Its a fun way of meeting people in a social environment. There are classes for all levels from beginners upwards. Do not be put off - you learn at your own pace with no pressure to progess further until you have mastered the basic steps which are not difficult.
There are lots of salsa clubs in the UK in every town, a quick google for Southampton produces the following but there are many more - http://www.tracieslatinclub.co.uk/Classes.htm
Good luck - you will definately enjoy the experience - do it!

beanie1, Well done! That's the most possitive reply from DGO so far I think. Our friends do Salsa and they really enjoy it and it's all levels of ability and age range.
D G Orf, There is, I believe a club that goes on a Skiing/Salsa holiday to Spain. I'll see if I can find out more.

IncoqSkiSno - the one you are thinking of is www.danceholidays.com which have dance holidays to Spain, Cuba, and NYC.
But, perhaps IMO its best if DGO samples salsa locally before committing to a 3/7 days salsa holiday.
PS - found it - they combine sking/salsa holidays in Granada, Spain

I would say the dance holiday is a little excessive, you want a hobby not a lifestyle, and the women that tend to go on these trips arent really in your desired age range etc
