I'm going to the funeral of my neighbour on Thursday, be the first time I've put a suit on for 20 years. Currently 11 days to get a body cremated in Grenoble the backlog is so long, can't all be Covid though. Florist said she's never done such good business.
Still he was no spring chicken.

my stubai trip is also cancelled, question now is should i get a refund for the lufthansa flight or keep it open for rebooking? as the times were changed just a few days ago , i have both options. Anyone knows the rebooking rules better? the explanation on the site is not quite clear. I am given the option to keep the ticket open until 31st of jan but is that the date I must rebook or the date I must travel? Also, it is supposedly free, even if I change the destination? So I can keep the ticket open and rebook last minute for a drcember flight (if skiing is possible) without paying fare difference rtc?

@queenie pretty please, My wife, who works in drug research, now focussed on COVID, is saying that because the nasty effect of COVID come from the Cytokine storms - basically the immune system going crazy, immunosuppressants are actually a likely candidate treatment.

@ringingmaster, a friend of mine has just recovered from the virus surprisingly easily and quickly. He attributed this (and also his wife’s similar quick recovery) to their level of fitness and good diet. He was pleasantly surprised, because he is in remission from lymphatic cancer and is immunosuppressed, and his wife has Type 1 diabetes.
I told him what you said above.

Neighbour buried at Grenoble cemetery, no cremation but in the family plot.
However a Gallic twist. When the plot was opened it was full, which was not expected. There was an extra coffin under the neighbour's dad - turns out it may be his mistress ! His mum was in there too. Mistress has been kicked out and buried elsewhere.

I had a perception that being a country with less population density, generally willing population to listen to rules, less inflow of outside people since the summer etc, that the rate would have come down quicker l. I haven’t been following the local lockdown rules though.

Way back when I had a proper job, one of our customers was a local historical society. They published booklets for various parishes containing details of the graves, who was buried where, and how many spaces were left, “space for a child” kind of thing. I used to find it a bit grim, but also kind of fascinating.

You could say that the mistress has lost the plot!

Well I guess records have to be kept so you know who’s where or else it’s a lot of work digging it back up to find there isn’t room in there anyway.

@Bennyboy1, not sure why that would be true. Look at Switzerland which is the land of everyone keeping to whatever rules are thought appropriate, currently around 20,000 cases a day and a 14 day rate of well over a 1000 cases per 100000 population. Far higher than the supposedly rule breaking Italians. There are a number of reasons for virus rates most of which are not properly understood. Unsurprisingly urban areas such as Innsbruck and Vienna have generally (but not always) had higher rates than the more sparsely populated rural areas but similar to other urban areas in nearby countries such as Munich. Also bear in mind that the raw "number of cases" is related to the number of tests carried out, it could be that Austria is more effective in identifying cases than other countries.

@Bennyboy1, a willing population who will listen to rules? Not any more or less than your average European, I wouldn’t say. Lower population density certainly helps (that one is true), but it’s taken a lot of effort to curb the parties. There’s plenty of travel across the borders too (although less with the recent German travel warning) it’s more the arrivals by air that have reduced.
Lockdown rules are sometimes just as daft as elsewhere. There is less emphasis on work transmission than there should be, and not enough on air transmission generally. Masks are magical and will protect you on a crowded bus, and there’s no need for interventions in churches because priests are capable of keeping people safe
If infection rates are rising across the continent, it would be way more surprising if Austria’s weren’t. It’s not dramatically different to its neighbours, and has pretty similar policies overall.

@Scarlet, I see, so the work from home don’t take public transport etc is not currently a strong message. Priests! Wow ok. I understand. I had spoken to a couple of friends in Vienna after the terrible attacks this week to check if they were ok and they told me they had been asked to work from home. So I had assumed it was like the uk currently.
@munich_irish, yes good point on the tests. Switzerland has a lot of border traffic from France so I guess that has been a big negative during recent weeks.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@munich_irish, yeah, but we had hardly any rules to actually break in CH.

@Bennyboy1, I don’t think it’s quite like the UK. It’s a little more organised, but it’s easy to look good when your benchmark is Boris Johnson! Restrictions have generally been much lower than in the UK, except for the first few weeks in March/April. Shops are still open now, and we only have an evening curfew rather than all day, and that is mainly to keep people from visiting each other because what you do or who your have in your own house is no business of the govt.
Probably more office jobs in Vienna tbf, more factories and tourism over here. No message about not using public transport, except for ski lifts.

@Bennyboy1, I doubt it but who knows, I believe people coming from France are required to quarantine in Switzerland though border commuters are allowed. There appears to be a correlation between language and the level of virus, more French speakers seem to get it than German speaking ones though that is almost certainly a spurious connection.
Map of Austria with daily updates of the various figures etc, as you can see Bezirk Schwaz, of which the Zillertal is part, has currently just about the highest 7 day rate in Austria
