Terrible flooding in Chatel today.
Between 20cm and 90cm of powder flooding, depending on where you went.
There was a weird smell of vinegar, however.

Crazy hot temps on the way in the run up to NY. Let’s hope that spike on the 27th gives us something to play with. After that it looks like go high or go home!

For those curious about the NAO it’s been strongly positive since the start of November.
This is in line with the majority of the seasonal forecasts as we headed into winter.
Also in line with the type of weather we’ve seen recently, heavy snowfall in the northern Alps, particularly the western end, with a relatively high snowline.

Avalanche warnings rising to 4 in parts of Salzburgerland.
“Avalanche danger rising to HIGH (4) in some places
Intensive snowfall atop an unfavourable base, accompanied by lots of wind = significant rise in danger. Slab avalanches can be easily triggered above 1500 m in nearly all aspects. Danger indications and favourable terrain are barely perceptible due to poor visibility. In zones where snowfall has been heaviest, naturally triggered Size 3 (large) avalanches are likely.”

Level 4 avalanche risk in western Tirol.
https://avalanche.report/bulletin/latest
In and around the Arlberg:
“Over a wide area 50 to 70 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall above approximately 800 m. The fresh wind slabs will become increasingly prone to triggering in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 1800 m.”

Hi Bah Humbug / Grinch here.
Have to say it was feckin shite up the hill today, windy even at 2,100m so loads of lifts shut, which is so unusual for Serre Che.
Then the bastardos decreed no pedestrians on the gondolas and then changed various lower valley lift passes* so much so that altitude restaurants had loads of cancellations Inc us was a bit of a shite day.
*not worth paying €36 for four lifts and then lunch on top
Time again for XC me thinks as apart from all the above snow was shite on piste and off piste even worse!

Really cold today with the wind. It rained to 2500 meters leaving rain channels which are skiable where they are softened by the sun.... Otherwise very rough. Op is rock hard. Now snowing.
