Snowing at 1200, raining lightly in Morzine. Roads are all clear, though there's an accident near geneva as the transfers are running late

Arrived safely in Chatel yesterday, enjoyed skiing today - pres la joux this morning and super Chatel this afternoon.
My wife was booked in for ski school mon-fri with Bass, unfortunately we got an email from Peter last night saying they have to cancel her course this week due to instructor injury. Can anyone recommend an alternative English speaking ski school in Chatel? Is there anyone else this week that has been let down by Bass and fancies skiing some easy greens and blues within the Chatel lift pass area with her? My son and I will ski with her some of the days but we have portes du soleil passes and want to explore the Reds and blacks.
Cheers
Alex

I suppose that's one of the problems of booking with a small ski school - though BASS are very good. I guess this is a difficult week to find an extra instructor.
No space with any of the other ski schools?

@pam w, other schools do have spaces - ESI,but as my wife is a nervous skier I wanted somewhere that was recommended and English speaking, I think we might look to book her a couple of hours private lessons on a couple of days this week, but I know she would feel more confident with a British instructor.

Started with rain in Les Gets village this morning, this soon turned to snow and didn't stop all day!
Pistes in good nick although visibility was lacking.
Some great powder at the top of chamossiere when the vision got better.
Tomorrow looking good

better be quick - they are probably pretty booked up and might not have many hours available. Can understand your preference for BASS but surely she'll be better in an ESI group than just pottering around? ESIs vary, obviously, but our local one is good.

@AlskiH,
Easy2Ride (ESI) were great with my 3 year old 2 weeks ago and I've used them too. See if Flo is available. Excellent English and very kind and patient. Had my son turning downhill on day 3! Good Luck.

Bad visibility today, but some lovely, lovely powder. Bit avalanchey, though, so no epic tours into the middle of nowhere....

@AlskiH,
Ooops see you are in Chatel - we used E2R in Morzine (sorry didn't read post properly). Have also used ESI in La Clusaz - both have been good experiences so I think it's a good franchise.

Didn't get out much today as it was murky all morn and we arrived late last night, too late to eat. But such skiing as we did was on wonderful flattering snow (the benefits of yesterday's dump) and despite flattish light it was really enjoyable. Tons of fresh.
We are in an apartment which means you have to start with all of Proclou every morning. A lovely run but so crowded, understandably I suppose as it is very beginner friendly.
Wind seems to be picking up again a little.

@L8, Proclou is a lovely beginner run, but why don't you try another route, there are a few alternatives as I recall

I honestly wouldn't get hung up about that, my family and friends have used loads of French ski schools in the past 10 years, they all speak excellent English and have been brilliant. I can hardly remember a bad experience to be honest. Have used ESF dozens of times.

@mheadbee,
It's difficult to know, it was ESF at Les Deux Alpes that put Marion off skiing, we gave them the benefit of the doubt once, and went with them 2 years later, and although it was a different instructor, they were still not very understanding of someone who has skied a few weeks but still struggles with blue runs.
Might try ESI though

All sorted, booked her into ESI for the week with a French instructor called Michel. She had her first lesson this morning and said it was great.

Nipped over to LG from Morzine today. The snow was fine and it was a pleasure not to be rained on each time we dropped below 1400!!! Visibility was shocking however with thick cloud and 5m visibility.

I'll second the visibility comment today. Anything over 1500 was very poor visibility but was great to come back dry unlike our drowned rat impersonations yesterday.
Some of the runs lower down to Morzine are now pretty poor, particularly Retour de Nantes with a a large section just mud and rock and Le stase still closed. That said the snow a bit higher up is great and the vast majority of runs are open so with a bit more visibility the conditions and the area will be very good indeed.
Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

@AlskiH, sounds like my sister (Kath) is in the same class as your wife. We were hoping to get her into the BASS "nervous improvers" class that didn't run but she seems to be getting on OK with Michel.
Get her to say hello if they haven't already.

Yep we too had a great day today - tackled "the wall" and skied quite a bit if off-piste.
Busy getting back this afternoon so decided to come back to Chatel via Morgins - bit of a walk from one side of Morgins to the other but no queues anywhere on the Swiss side

The morning was lovely, with clear blue skies and great visibility. Did the circuit from Morzine, via avoriaz-chatel-morgins-crossetts-avoriaz. Mostly it was great, but from 3pm onwards the cloud came down again and visibility in places was 5m again. 4:30 onwards around Prodain was like skiing in the dark!

Best day of the week so far, made it from Avo to Plaine Dranse after a few up n downs in the Lindarets valley. Closed in around Avo and the Hauts Forts fairly early.
Chaux des Rosees is a good lift.
Very crowded but easy to understand why.
Not looking forward to three more days with the Proclou as the first run. The crowds on that were bad Mon am (beginner classes?) and worse today (people coming up from Morzine to get above the valley clouds?).
This is a clouds and crowds holiday so far but some good ski conditions too.

Hello, can someone give me a quick run down on what is in Ardent? Looking a chalet there for next year. What is there to do in the village?
We have stayed in Les Gets for the last two seasons.
3 families with 3 year olds and 2 infants.
Thanks
|
|
|
|
|
|
No comparison with Les Gets whatsoever - there's very very little in the hamlet and you wouldn't, for example, finish your dinner and take a walk around Ardent to walk it off. I don't even think it could be termed a village. There's a pub or two, a ski hire shop and that might be the sum total of services. I could be wrong, but I don't even think there's a tabac/grocery store.
Great access to Avoriaz though and plenty of buses into Morzine when the lifts are open.

@simpic, there is very little in Ardent, just as outlined above. A couple of bars, I don't know how late they stay open. And then quite a few chalets most of which appear to be taken by The Family Ski Company each year and run catered, I think. So there are lots of small children around there and they are taken up on the gondola to ski school at Lindarets.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@simpic, There is one (maybe two) restaurants these days. The bars didn't use to stay open beyond early evening (but there has been some development up there since I last had dinner so that may have changed).
But even "hamlet" is suggesting bigger than it is...
