@Markymark29, How much do you reckon to have fallen in Warth? St Anton had a mere dusting at base although maybe 10cm above 2000m. We are thinking of heading over Zurs/Lech way tomorrow.

@gwatts10,
1. At Arlberg both Lech and St.Anton are the best options for non-skiërs, with Lech having the prettiest scenery and best skiërs+non-skiers lunch options, but St.Anton having the wellness centre. Zürs is definitely not good for non-skiërs, nor are St.Christoph and Stuben.
2. It is useless to search the internet for availability at this time of year. Hotels have not yet released bookings for Winter 2017 in general. Earliest internet search are usefull from august/september
3. This goes especially for Lech as it has so much returning guests, pencilling their 2017 holiday at the end of their 2016 holiday. Hosts will ask their steady guests to confirm their booking in August, after which some rooms -because of non-returning guests- will be released for new guests
4. Lech is much smaller than Val d'Isere and Courchevel. And indeed Lech is the most expensive in Austria and actually more expensive than Val etc.
Lech is up there with Courchevel 1850 and St. Moritz. Still you can get very good deals in Lech
5. Lech definitely is a hotel destination. Few appartments, and fewer large appartments.
6. Lech Hotels are almost 100% family owned, and relatively small. If your group is 6 families (or is it 6 persons in total??) you might be having trouble finding accomodation willing to accept such a large group, as it is a larger risk (in case of cancellation), and because such a large group might be considered too dominant in a small hotel
7. Concluding all this, you might want to send emails to larger hotels like: Austria and Auriga (both also appartments!, and family oriented), maybe Hotel Burg (Oberlech)
Alternatively, have a look at www.lech.at, send private emails to hotels, or try to get in touch with the tourist office (although they as well are dependent on online-availability)
But you should definitely not be having to pay 15000 euro for an apartment

So heading to St Anton next week... any views on how accurate the current weather forecasts are likely to be? Of course happy to see some snow falling, but would ideally like some clearer days as well! Are the weather patterns fairly settled and are clearer interludes likely?

A bit of advice required from Lech regulars please
My wife's skis are finally just about knackered (i.e. they can't grind the base any more). Rather than purchase a pair now (and to be frank neither my wife not I are experts in ski technology) as we're off the Lech in 4 weeks time are I thought it might be a better to rent and change the skis a few times over the week so that my wife gets to try a variety of skis so we have a better idea what to she'd like (me ) to purchase. Any recommendations for a rental shop that would be particularly good for this.
I can't guarantee we'd buy in Lech as I might wait until we come back and then look to buy in the post-season sales

@Langerzug, Thanks for the reply really appreciate it , we have a few ladies that like to lunch rather than ski/board so it looks like it will
be St Anton or Lech rather than Zurs/St Christoph .And it does appear to be a Hotel destination so we will keep trawling

@clarky999, We have settled on Arlberg , simply because we want a reasonable sized resort , with good facilities , without the abrupt (some would say rude ) attitude of the french , having done St Anton a few times , Lech seemed like a good idea .Little did i know that i was opting for one of the most expensive resorts in the Alps . But we will still give it a go .

@mb, http://www.bergfex.com/stanton-stchristoph/wetter/berg/ is pretty good, but...
(a) do not take too much notice of the depths, a bigger number is more snow, but that's all you can read in to the figures,
(b) obviously the further out you go the less reliable the forecast is, and
(c) local effects in the mountains make a huge difference to wind and precipitation. e.g. if the weather is coming from the West then Lech/Zuers/Stuben will get more snowfall than St Anton itself.

Lovely weather today which was probably why the pistes were so quiet, everybody headed off piste! Meant the pistes stayed in good shape most of the day, and temperatures were cooler than earlier in the week so the snow didn't really start to get slushy until you were much closer to the village.

@gwatts10,

1) Does anyone know any good chalet operators / web sites to trawl through that maybe independently owned/run .
|
I think Ski Total run chalet(s) in and around Lech, worth a look I 'd say.
Quote: |
2) Is accommodation mainly hotel based , and if so , should I change our search to hotels.
|
Mainly but not exclusively. There are a few apartments too, but not many I think.
Quote: |
3) Would people recommend St Anton , Lech or indeed Zurs as a base and are they linked by piste /lift ( I vaguely recalled we had to board down to a road catch a bus and finish the journey on the bus ) |
Personally I'd recommend St Anton for a bigger / mixed group, but Lech is a nice place. I don't think there is much in Zuers apart from very expensive hotels. See below for info the bus.
Quote: |
4) And is there a good web site that shows the ski links , the official web site seems very clunky
|
The St Anton site (http://www.stantonamarlberg.com/) isn;t too bad, but it's hard to find a simple piste map on there. Snow-forecast host a decent one at high res: http://www.snow-forecast.com/pistemaps/St-Anton_pistemap_full.jpg
However, it change a bit next season when the new lift from Rauz goes in - it goes up to the top of Trittkopf in Zuers to link the two areas so you will no longer need to take the bus.

Madness to descend Torli after recent snow fall, even more insane to do it on foot. Had they been in an accident of some sort?

@gwatts10,
If you really want to go for Lech, you really should be willing to do-it-yourself, and not with a chalet/tour operator.
The best accomodation in Lech is definitely not with operators!

Great skiing day in lech and warth today... warth is quite nice actually; most lifts are old, but the vintage feel ihasits charm. Especially on a sunny day, and with snow as good as today's, it's definitely worth a visit. Loved the first slopes after the cable car from Lech (w8, w4, even w9 on the other side). We had a very good, typical and reasonably priced lunch at Korbersee (at the bottom of w5). The schnitzel was great
Another restaurant I can highly recommend in Lech is Cafè Fritz, advised by my landlord; absolutely typical, with local clients and good prices. If you reserve in advance you can have fondue chinoise (meat), it's a bit expensive but apparently very good.

@gwatts10, take a look at hotels in Stuben, good links to all areas (via lifts to St Anton, bus to Lech/Zurs) but a bit cheaper as not as trendy, however fastest access to some of the best OP in the morning

No idea. We went down the "Wald" option and thus came out below the bottom of the Torli. They either misjudged what the seriousness of the Torli or simply did not know.
We ski with a local. He referred to those people as "unplanned suicide contenders". That was reinforced by the huge amount of avi rubble at the end of the Torli.

@musehead, sorry missed your post, if you went hope you had a great day, I'd have said about 15-20cm at the top fell Weds. Awesome day yesterday, cold sunny and freshies on all slopes. Warth this week has been excellent (I don't understand the comment about the old lifts above, OK there's a couple of older lifts but they add to the feel of the place, in general it's as good as it needs to be, never queued once all week).
Heading round now to St Anton, early start....looking forward to meeting up with pals and doing some of our favourites in next weeks pow😀😀

Friday found some fresh stuff far right of Rendl, rossfall I think it's called followed by a short hike back to the chair then over to Hinterrendl kept high far right across through a few avi barriers some more fresh back to rendl.
Saturday roamed around zurs/Lech, gorgeous day so much off piste potential. Explored traverse high right from top of Zug top chair lots of fresh potential in big bowl there before finding my way back to warth lift connection.

@Langerzug, the photograph is taken from the LWD Tirol annual report.
https://lawine.tirol.gv.at/archiv/winterberichte/
So I doubt that there will have been any attempt to "distort" the photograph. That said slope steepness can look different depending on the perspective the photograph is taken from and I agree it doesn't feel as steep when you are on it as it looks in that photograph.
Interestingly some years ago I ended up having to come down the chute highlighted as the Avalanche path when a guide from a well known local ski guiding company got lost in the cloud and ended up above Törli rather than at the bottom of Schöngraben T Bar...

Whether or not you think it is steep/narrow, the Torli is a classic terrain trap. You only had to see the Avi rubble below it on Friday to appreciate how violent an Avi can be once it lets go in that gully. Even with an ABS, your chances of survival are minimal to zero.
Moving on... a warmer day today, with variable light. The best bits of the off piste seemed to be the bumps. Everything I saw today was pretty much tracked out. Skied StA, Zurs, Lech, and Warth. Furkawang (sp?) was a bit of fun, as was the line under the Rufi cables. Bachseite is thoroughly trashed. Now largely a bumps run.

@ulmerhutte, yes in that instance as the report says despite the small amount of snow released the steep sides of the slope meant the victim was sadly buried 1.7m deep.

How are we looking for snow and temperatures this week folks? Also how busy is it midweek and likely to be this weekend? Any thoughts on Ischgl, generally seems to miss out on the snow
Bergfex has near perfect conditions for Anton, successive snowfalls, cold from Thurs on and sun peeking out from time to time

@stanton - thanks so much for the tip about Hotel Salome in Oberlech, had the best schnitzel of my life there today It was veal, not pork, just as it should be... Not cheap, but worth it. The kaesespaetzle also looked great, I'll be back to try them out! BTW, skied in St. Anton with a friend for a day last week; it was awfully crowded on the Galzig side in the morning, but it slowly got better - and regardless, I must say I finally understood why St. Anton is so popular. Some slopes are really amazing. And the views are just as breathtaking as in Zuers.
Snow was a bit crusty in Lech today. Very low visibility in the morning, got a bit better after it started snowing and improved again in the afternoon, under a constant veil of snow, although it did get complicated at times. All in all, yet another glorious day. I was meant to leave for another resort last Sat, but decided to stay here - the Arlberg gets me every time

@stanton, the Dutch royals do not have much luck do they Poor girl, it doesn't matter who you are, a broken legs as a kid is no fun.
Today's snowfall very disappointing over here in Zillertal, poor vis and crowded slopes. I don't mind the poor vis if it's actually snowing, and if I could see where I was going I'd soon avoid the crowds by heading off piste... neither of those were happening today. Light rain in the valley now, hopefully that means some snow here and in the Arlberg too.

Snowing quite nicely, but hard to tell how much has come down. The wind has moved it around our courtyard. It sounded like the snow guns were also doing their bit during the night.
Hard pistes and crowds in StA yesterday. Kapall probably the pick of the bunch for me.
