Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Blizzards forecast for Thursday, looks pretty wild Friday morning but the wind should ease up for the afternoon. Saturday is looking to be the day to aim for at the weekend with light winds and sunny spells and a few snow showers, as it presently looks like gales for Sunday.

^Moody sky from outside the Top Station before a blast down a freshly groomed Traverse mid-afternoon.

^Top Basin in fantastic condition. 1250ft vertical possible off the lifts, but short walk required from Gunbarrel into M1 queuing area to regain the M1 Poma. Chicken Gully is the best route.

^Loch Morlich viewed from the M2 on the way down after a wee tour to the Ciste Mhearaidh after the lifts closed. M2 complete to top of the Daylodge Poma, can reach the DLP corner, but easiest to walk over to the Windy Ridge path and head down on the path.

Seems beyond my technical capabilities to post this mornings and this evenings webcam shots. Suffice to say this morning the below midstation shot was mostly brown, the last shot before dusk this evening was all white. Skiing back to base tomorrow again?

From MWIS:

In the longer term, there is evidence that the unseasonal cold will continue for much of the month, with overall snow-melt
in Scotland being very slow, and further fresh snowfalls likely.

^Snowing at the mid-station.

Now snowed for over 24 hours with over a foot of fresh on CairnGorm Mountain. Can ski back to mid-station and the M1 Poma via various routes once again. Zig Zags fully passable providing a route for less experienced riders, though cutting into Gunbarrel after 2nd leg of ZZs best route today.

With care it was possible to ride back to the Daylodge via the Carpark / Burnside Runs. Yes you heard that right, CairnGorm goes top to bottom on 11th May!

Come get some.... the mountains looking so good even the Sun is expected to come out to play! snowHead

halfhand, The only place that could open is Cairngorm, I think they will stay open as long as enough people go up and weather conditions allow. If thinking of going up it will be best to check their website for up to date information http://www.cairngormmountain.org or their Facebook page, also watch the forecast for winds as that can affect what lifts open.

I'll just dump what I put in the other thread in the main forum here as I need my tea, its gone 8.30!

Well don't be to despondent about the Sunday thaw, there's been another 2-3 inches of fresh and plenty of drifting in the past 24 hours with the winds set to moderate overnight and good sunny spells on a largely fine Wednesday for those who can get out to grab some fresh tracks on the 16th of May! First train up scheduled for 10.20am, ticket office, Cas Bar and Ski Hire open at 10am.

^Tasty M1 RaceTrack. Best route via Horizon Road and down Chicken Gully, closest to mid-station.

^Looking up the Ciste Tow between showers on Tuesday. Total cover in the Top Basin and that's a 5ft snow fence up the left side of the tow.

^Upper Cas also loading up with the windblown fresh on Tuesday. Boulderfield and Fiacaill should be sweet too.

Near blanket cover above 3000ft, good till 2700/2800ft, then it thins out quite quickly meaning a short walk is required to regain the Funicular, but you can get level with the M1 queuing area via a combination of Chicken Gully and Zig Zags. A short hoof is a wee price to pay for fresh tracks mid-May and of course no such issues up in the Top Basin or on the upper Cas if the Cas runs. Ciste and Funicular run today and will on Wed, another tow or two if sufficient demand can run from the Ptarmigan, Polar Express, M1 Poma and Coire Cas.

Moderate off-piste on the Ptarmigan Ridge and upper East Lady, also in the Cas Boulderfield. Speak to patrol if thinking about steeper stuff. Coronation Wall and Headwall still looked pretty sketchy stability wise, wind blown accumulations sitting on a thaw/freeze layer.

I'll go out on a limb here and completely disagree with you. I've only been out in Scotland once this year, and it was great, but I'm firmly of the belief that the snow there just now is superficial and will no way last through the summer.

Hope I'm wrong though

Add in the Force 9 hairdrier on Monday night into Tuesday morning, then big thunderstorm and associated downpours in the wee small hours of Thursday and at least 1 meter of level snow has been shifted from the Top Basin since Monday. Crying or Very sad

Which is why for all the frustration, the repeated freeze/thaw cycling of winter is what makes Spring on the Scottish Mountains!

A few pix from the final day of the 2012 lift served season on CairnGorm Mountain on Saturday 26th May. Closing day on the 'Gorm turned out to be the equal hottest May day on record in Scotland when Cromdale, a few miles North of CairnGorm in Strathspey matched the record May maximum of 29.0c.

So that appears to be that for lift served sliding for the 2012 season, for tourers there are still extensive snow fields on the Cairngorm Plateau. If you need to scratch the itch before next season, we'll be having the now traditional post Solstice Winterhighland mid-summer slide in the Ciste Mhearaidh on CairnGorm Mountain on Saturday 23rd June or alternatively at Glencoe on Sunday 24th June, better still why not do both! Keep an eye on Winterhighland for more details as we get into June.
