Just noticed this on the Cairngorm website, raining but will turn to snow, but at least the wind is "steady"
Weather Conditions
Tuesday 1st February -7am update
Steady SW windspeeds at 98mph at the top station, temperature currently plus 3C and raining.
Rain is forecast to turn to heavy snow later in the day.
All Uplift is on hold due to High winds, and will be reviewed at 9am. Yesterday the piste machines were once again harvesting snow from the Fiacaill to ensure, we can continue to operate lower lifts. They also pisted out heavy drifting above Coire Cas.

scotia, nice piccies - looks like great conditions
Ricklovesthepowder, am liking the "heavy snow later in the day" bit not so pleased to see the rain this morning but that's all part of the 'normal' rollercoaster lol
Cairngorm wise the weather models seem to now be going for pretty much consistently below zero temps from tonight onwards with winds dying down a little bit and then becoming very light into early next week (Sunday night/Monday and thereafter) with snow today tomorrow and Friday. Fingers crossed this is close enough to be reasonably accurate - the main thing I'm looking for is a decent dump later today once this damned rain has cleared.
Amazing to think the forecast is so much worse for the western Alps - someone mentioned +12 in a few days somewhere else IIRC (mind you the higher level resorts are okay but low down not so good). So to be honest we're getting it pretty good if the forecasts for the Highlands are right!
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The lower slopes look horrific but with this snow forecast later and for the next few days it should be good again, hopefully!
Frequent severe upland gales over the coming week. Hurricane force winds likely across the Highlands on Thursday
evening. However also much lighter winds at times to north of frontal boundary waving across southern Scotland or
northern England for several days. Precipitation will be frequent on all mountain areas, but focussed across western
mountains and near waving front. Temperatures will constantly vary, with a series of freeze thaw cycles on higher areas,
the freeze periods most persistent over Highland Scotland, where on western mountains there will be periods of
considerable snowfall - but also of heavy rain and rapid thaw.
Right, so no skiing for me on Friday. What to do, what to do
Ricklovesthepowder, the lower slopes really aint changed too much since last week (they havent been worht anything other than a sketchy but fine route down - you wouldnt have lapped them top to bottom really, the current cam angle aint great. Looking at it right now though I think we're coming out if it pretty good

There's some briliant data available for the nerdy at winterhighland and the temperature is plummeting in the West Highlands now.
Here's a plot for Glencoe at around 800 metres ... the upper mountain is likely to be collecting new snow and by about 4 PM the snow line will be down to the top of the access chair.
That line'll be up and down like a yoyo for the next fw days.
I said on Saturday that I guessed all the resorts would close from Wednesday onwards with reopening likely on Sunday. Here's the wind graph for the same 800 metre height at Glencoe. If those peak gusts don't get above about 120 mph or so by the end of the week, I'll eat my yellow helmet.
bullet hard snow reported from yesterday, looks like the base is just about managing to survive
this blog is a greart little resource actually to get another bit of info on conditions, usually just a snapshot of one particular area, but these guys are up there digging pits etc every day (and of course provide the vital daily avalanche forecast - be careful out there folks 65 avy's recorded this season so far, 48 in January (and 2 in the last 2 days - some fresh around somewhere maybe?!! though could be the rain doing some loosening here and there)
You know it makes sense.

Ricklovesthepowder, I have stumbled across a genius invention... yours for just £1,999.99....

MoodyFFS, lol very good
Ricklovesthepowder, judging by the Winterhighland cams the snow has now reached Cairngorm - it's been falling in the west for a while and now seems to be snowing down t mid mountain at Cairngorm - some big flakes at the top from the looks of it

Ricklovesthepowder, take a look at the webcams on page one of this thread... at least a couple suggest something like a lot of snow falling. will be interesting to see if the high winds let it settle and accumulate or not. i'd say some shaded gullies will catch a fair bit of snow but exposed areas will maybe not hold on... all depends on the wind.
Couple of Glencoe shots from today for comparison, first one taken just before midday:
The second taken just before 4pm showing fresh snow falling:
Hopefully it'll keep up like that overnight and into tomorrow.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ricklovesthepowder, I think you need to get your head round the fact the best skiing is on the white bits. Don't worry about the brown bits at the sides, they are very difficult to ski on although some people try
Still will be interesting to see if we have net gain/loss by the weekend...
MWIS for the West still calls for rapid thawing....

^ it's snow for sure, take a look at both of the SSC hut cams and you'll see it.
Ricklovesthepowder, if you link directly to the image it'll update with the cams - better to grab the imags, save them online (maybe in the snowMedia Zone) and then link to them as static images. Just paste in the URL of the image and wrap it in the following tags: [img]IMGAGE URL GOES HERE

The Winterhighland server has crashed and burned atm. Anonymously high load most of the day which is slightly suspicious has crashed the physical hardware nodes hosting the Virtual Private Server. Will update when I have more news and will try and post a summary storm report and wx outlook here and in a few other places if the server remains unavailable this evening.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Winterhighland, sorry can't have helped posting links to Winterhighland piccies on here but sounds like the burden was coming from somewhere else from what you describe - best of luck sorting it!
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

MoodyFFS,
freeheelskier, we are yes ... mind you the resorts are closed at the moment due to the weather so we're a bit soft sometimes
It'll be interesting to see what's what once the storms clear - fair amount of snow falling at the moment with more to come over the next couple of days, only potential problem is a fluctuating freezing level but hopefully that won't coincide with too much wind and rain.
BTW, where are you based freeheelskier?

Winterhighland down again, looks like a planned outage though because there's a message confirming it's down - presumably to sort out some remaining issues.
