Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Looks like the wind is picking up throughout this week... at what kind of wind speeds to they need to shut?

Depending on the wind direction it's normally 65-75mph for the funnicular and around 35-45mph for the surface tows.

wind direction as important as speed for the tows - straight up or down the tows (generally northerly/southerly on cairngorm) then can operate up to a fair old windspeed, but accross the tow lines they're knackered much sooner

nothing running this morning at Cairngorm due to winds in excess of 80mph!!!

they will be reviewing as the morning goes on though.

on a positive note, it is snowing at the top... i bet that would sting the face a bit!!

The overall forecast for the weekend has vastly improved... it's nowhere near the apocalypse it was (for Cairngorm at least). Rain at ALL levels has receded on Friday, so it will be interested to see how this one turns out... I have until Friday lunchtime to make my mind up... time will tell! Smile

Ricklovesthepowder, I guess it is still unknown really... could easily swing back the other way - but at least it's heading in the right direction (for now!)... damage limitation this week and then see how the snow lays....

Could swing to be honest but hey there's a skiff of new snow at Cairngorm (haven't looked anywhere else today) with hopefully more to come so could be good Very Happy

Good to get onto a thread where nobody's throwing their toys out of the pram - have you seen the moaning about conditions in France on the weather thread!

You'd think some people thought they'd bought a guarantee of weekly fresh snow when they booked their hols over there, with that attitude it's no wonder some people wouldn't dream of skiing Scotland, and it's quite a relief they don't to be frank ... although I'm ever so tempted to big up Scottish conditions just to wind them up!

As they say there's people who ski and then there's skiers .... and then there's the loons who ski Scotland Wink Laughing Wink

roga, I think your right, idiots moaning about Scottish conditions,'just been reading the last 3 pages of the Scottish snow thread, there is someone called Ricklovesthepowder, who seems like a right fussy sod, oh, wait a minute......... Smile

Just one other thing, what is a skiff of snow? It that a small amount, or epic snowfalls, I ain't got a clue!

Ricklovesthepowder, you're repeating yourself Wink

Nah, I wasn't referring to you - there's some folk around at the moment (often with low numbers of posts) who seem to be dissing the entire season as 'one of the worst ever' just because the resort they booked into in France months ago hasn't had a fall of snow for 4 weeks or something similar - that's just silly and completely untrue given conditions elsewhere are pretty good (including Scotland actually!).

You never said the entire season was a write off did you now Laughing

A skiff is a dusting, not much but better than nowt ... although reading the Cairngorm site it actually sounds like it's been more than a skiff:
Quote:
-2C. Visibility was good between snow showers, but reduced considerably in heavy snow, winds eased slightly at the end of the day. More snow is forecast tomorrow. The piste machines were once again harvesting snow from the Fiacaill to ensure, we can continue to operate lower lifts. They also pisted out heavy drifting above Coire Cas.

Note that the planning outlook still says:
Quote:
Planning Outlook: All mountain areas of Britain from Thursday, 3rd February, 2011
Frequent severe upland gales over the coming week, for periods storm force or above, most persistently across Scotland. Precipitation will be frequent on all mountain areas, but focussed across western mountains. Temperatures
will constantly vary, with a series of freeze thaw cycles on higher areas, the freeze periods most persistent over Highland Scotland, where on western mountains there will be periods of considerable snowfall - but also of heavy rain and rapid thaw.

However, I'd treat that with some scepticism given that I've noticed it tends to be the last thing they update often despite a few days of differing weather charts. Fingers crossed it'll be updated to an outlook with less rain and more snow, as have the forecasts for this week!

Winterhighland also has interesting forecasts for each of the ski areas with snow, very significant snow in the west, being a feature (right hand side of each page): Cairngorm, Glencoe, Glenshee, Nevis Range and The Lecht.

BBC weather have just reported "significant snow" over Scotland (particularly in the west) Thursday/Friday as well - am liking all these reports so far! snowHead

MoodyFFS, wait till march and april (and even may & june some years Smile) - longer days, bluebird 100mile visibility, spring snow, a pint a the base or on the deck in your tee-shirt (well, maybe your t-shirt and jumper Laughing ) on the way home, still regular top-up showers and cold nights - that's what I think of when I think Scottish skiing

keep the faith dudes, we'll be living la vida again soon after this cycle has blown through
