Looks like the wind is picking up throughout this week... at what kind of wind speeds to they need to shut? |
Depending on the wind direction it's normally 65-75mph for the funnicular and around 35-45mph for the surface tows.

Heading to Glenshee, hoping it will stay reasonably calm for a few hours this morning.

wind direction as important as speed for the tows - straight up or down the tows (generally northerly/southerly on cairngorm) then can operate up to a fair old windspeed, but accross the tow lines they're knackered much sooner

The overall forecast for the weekend has vastly improved... it's nowhere near the apocalypse it was (for Cairngorm at least). Rain at ALL levels has receded on Friday, so it will be interested to see how this one turns out... I have until Friday lunchtime to make my mind up... time will tell!

MoodyFFS, great news. So what is the outlook now then. Come up to cairngorm next week for a ski?

Ricklovesthepowder, I guess it is still unknown really... could easily swing back the other way - but at least it's heading in the right direction (for now!)... damage limitation this week and then see how the snow lays....

Note that the planning outlook still says:
Quote: |
Planning Outlook: All mountain areas of Britain from Thursday, 3rd February, 2011
Frequent severe upland gales over the coming week, for periods storm force or above, most persistently across Scotland. Precipitation will be frequent on all mountain areas, but focussed across western mountains. Temperatures
will constantly vary, with a series of freeze thaw cycles on higher areas, the freeze periods most persistent over Highland Scotland, where on western mountains there will be periods of considerable snowfall - but also of heavy rain and rapid thaw. |
However, I'd treat that with some scepticism given that I've noticed it tends to be the last thing they update often despite a few days of differing weather charts. Fingers crossed it'll be updated to an outlook with less rain and more snow, as have the forecasts for this week!
Winterhighland also has interesting forecasts for each of the ski areas with snow, very significant snow in the west, being a feature (right hand side of each page): Cairngorm, Glencoe, Glenshee, Nevis Range and The Lecht.
BBC weather have just reported "significant snow" over Scotland (particularly in the west) Thursday/Friday as well - am liking all these reports so far!
