Getting a little near the knuckle ladies, yes GDO needs to start experiencing life outside his 'comfort zone' and he's had an invite by a delightful young lady to visit the West Coast . . . which if he doesn't go, would probably rank as one of the greater missed opportunities in life. Add to that copious amounts of great snow.
But if we come down to abusing him it's not going to help.

beanie1, but why, many of them would probably be classed as not unatractive but wearing an outfit designed for a teenager does them no favours.

I did try the Yahoo version but most of the women on there are either single and looking for fit, athletic or handsome types or have one or more kids and seem to be looking for financial support.

I don't really care, after 30 odd years of abuse I've got to the stage where I can ignore almost all of it.
To be brutaly honest one of the reasons that I love Wengen is that I can be myself there, I feel confident in the area and can happily talk with anyone there from youngest child through to beautiful young woman and on to ancient elderly ex military officers, I find I can't do this in the UK

So why not ask said young women out for a drink?! Do you know anyone of the right age in Wengen who can introduce you to all the eligible young women? What about chalet girls?!
I'm guessing there aren't many single women of the right age in the DHO?!

D G Orf, What makes you think that an educated gentleman of good manners and obvious wit would not have great fun and lots of social opportunities up at Squaw Valley? And probably at a significant discount to the cost of a week in Wengen. When you add the company of of a Squaw Valley instructor as your social host . . . I'm sorry sunshine, it's a 'no brainer' . . go and have some fun, you might even be able to hook up with a few more snowheads for the trip.

D G Orf,
I'm with Masque on this one. I also think American women would be a lot more friendly than Europeans. They'd love your accent, and then you could take them to Wengen and they'd love it there to as it's so "quaint" and pretty!

I seriously doubt it, return trip to Wengen under £100, accomodation (half board) arround £36 a night Ski pass approx £54 for each of the 7 currently booked weeks (season pass £378), no ski or boot hire required as both are in resort already

D G Orf, OK, but you're still finding reasons not to take a small risk. If nothing else, you'll always be able to say that you tried it and didn't like it. Go and find out, Wengen will still be there when you get back

D G Orf, if you're really looking for a woman there are plenty of very good suggestions here as to action you can take. But it is something you have to do and want to do.
How about the dry ski slope at Southampton - is that near to you? Can you join the ski club there? Good opportunity to meet a nice young lady looking for a kindly helping hand with her skiing
You go cycling - do you belong to a cycling club? Again, more opportunities to meet others. Join a gym, take up squash, join a film club, make yourself do something that you wouldn't normally do.
If you want to meet someone you have to take some positive action. There is nothing whatsoever wrong or different about you I'm sure, you're just not getting out there. Much as we would all like this thread to continue, we'd much rather you posted one day soon to say you'd met someone.
You go skiing several times a year - go to Wengen on one of those occasions and go somewhere different on another occasion. Find a nice resort (there'll be plenty of advice here!), book into a nice hotel and prop up the bar of an evening or stay in a chalet. We've met loads of nice people whilst sat at the bar of our hotel. You'll be surprised at how many people will speak to you if you're by yourself.

D G Orf,
Everyone says join a gym but I'm not sure it's really the best place to meet people. I think a more sociable, perhaps a team sport would be better - the sort of thing where everyone gathers in the pub afterwards. Do you play any team sports?
Or what about diving? Most diving clubs in the UK tend to be pretty sociable, and I'm sure there'd be loads of options on the south coast.

beanie1, I'm crap at team sports, the only things I've ever been good at are skiing and target shooting, and the second of those is now politically incorect whist the first is not much good in the UK.
Diving never appealed to me though I have several friends who dive

DGO - have you considered Solos singles holidays ( www.solosholidays.co.uk - Ok they are not going to Wengen next year but there are lots of other resorts and the gender mix is 50/50 female to male or sometimes 60/40 . I must say the holidays are not on the cheap side but it does enable you to meet someone with similar interests over a week. The groups are usually about 16 or so. I would recommend them after being on their holidays.
Thinking about it there is also a UK events company ( www.spiceuk.com ? ) that have lots of events( not all group/team type of events ) and also ski holidays I see from their site and they have club nights in Southampton amongst other cities. Have not tried them so cannot say whether they are good or otherwise.

pistenbully,
hibernia, £959 (inc singles suplement) for 7 days in Grindlewald is definately not cheap .... it's off season for gods sake ! A single room in the hotel is £661 for that week (it's a very expensive hotel) but even so ! |
Totally agree with you - Solos seems to be pricing themselves out of the market. And the Hotel Eiger is not good value for money either!. A better option is Madonna di Campiglio ( yes not anywhere near Wengen ! ) at £100 cheaper, still quite expensive but miles ahead of the Eiger. More like a gourmet skiing holiday with wonderful, albeit mainly intermediate skiing. Everyone who has been there raves about the standard of the hotel . I try not to tell too many people about this one.

It's all very well telling D G Orf to get off his @rse and look for people, but I have been doing that ages and haven't had any luck! Maybe he should stop looking here and look elsewhere, but don't give him a really hard time!
