With half a metre of new snow forecast later this week it should be good!

Sorry to derail the thread for a non-weather question. I was about to book Wengen for Jan 18th for 7 nights then noticed the Lauberhorn is on that weekend. How busy are the pistes likely to be that week? Likewise the village?

Busy but still great fun. You can ski pretty much everywhere even though they have set up the worlds longest downhill.
Mürren and Grindelwald are always avaliable.

@Rogerdodger, is that generally the whole week, or just the weekend? I’ve no issues if it is just the weekend, as we won’t be skiing until the Sunday anyway.

@george89, We have the slalom on Sunday afternoon, this has no impact whatsoever on skiing at Männlichen or Kleine Scheidegg, and after that all the spectators, athletes, media etc go home. The slalom and downhill courses will be closed for a few days while all the netting, TV stuff and the grandstands are dismantled. It’s a good week to be in Wengen.

Absolutely no issue at all, the Lauberhorn is run on Sat. Slalom on Sunday which is much quieter. During your week you can watch the enormous job of stripping the catch netting and all other course furniture.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

too late to suggest staying in the better village, Mürren?

You know it makes sense.

@Chris Brookes, haha! Not quite yet, waiting for a good price. What’s the village and hiking like up in Mürren? I only managed to visit Grindelwald when I was in Wengen earlier this year, which I thought was quite charmless. I assume Mürren is significantly nicer.

Much better snow, lovely hiking routes (easy to hard) and the village is full of charm and car-free....

Update on the Schilthornbahn20xx project, there will be no lift access to the Schilthorn after 13th October for 5 months: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/jqdHgb6KHbSEaCVN/
Quote:
On the 13th October means saying goodbye - for the last time the cable car transports guests from Birg to Schilthorn and return on that day. Then working on the piz gloria for 5 months. The enormously tight space conditions on the mountain do not allow it to simultaneously push the new building forward and keep the existing railway running. The old railway will be dismantled and in a short time the new railway will be built on almost the same route. Another challenge of the Silthornbahn 20XX.
Although the summit experience at the highest point - at Schilthorn - is not possible this winter - but don’t worry, the ski area Mürren - Schilthorn is open and offers convenient access to the winter sports area with the newly opened section from Stechelberg to Mürren and further to Birg. Thanks to the new, steepest cable car in the world from Stechelberg to Mürren, waiting times will not be an issue. So a visit is worth it sometimes!
