Quite likely option 1... just then whether to train all the way or cable car. Suspect we will try both.

@buchanan101, makes little difference if you are early say pre 9am when the queue at the Mannlichen cable car is small, post 9am until 11am stay on the train
On days with heavy snow the Mannlichen with its lack of trees is just white, best runs are Kleine Scheidegg to Grund (Blue Run 22) or Wengeneralp back to Wengen (Via Innerwengen) both involve lots of tree skiing which helps so much with visibility going via innerwengen saves the walk between the bottom of bumps and Allmend (not the whole distance between the two) which is inevitable with new unpisted snow on the ground and likely with even hardpack.
In good weather the Mannlichen offers lovely skiing and great scenery, the Lauberhorn can be lovely but is often crowded especially at weekends go up early or take an early lunch and go up when everyone else is lunching. Nice runs in the punchbowl area from Eigergletscher down to Argven under the Easyjet chairlift (Eigernordwand real name) can be cold first thing in the morning, but great area after fresh powder snow, After Heavy snow avoid the Black Oh God run from Eigergletscher down to the Wixi Chair, it will almost always be closed until they piste it as it is prone to sliding, great however if there has just been light snow.
Murren is a good spot to go at weekends, the locals tend to drive to Grindelwald where there's more parking than Lauterbrunnen which makes the slopes ether side of Grindelwald busier than Murren

Thanks D.G. Hopefully I can drag people out to be on an early train from Lauterbrunnen
Maybe Murren next Sunday then, though maybe wait on the Schilthorn until afternoon, given it will be our first day

This is tenuous to Jungfrau Ski region. Jumped in the car and drove over to Lenk. Access to the mountain via two chairs from St Stephan then the most delightful short ski tour and found some very good powder!
The Top 4 lift pass!

@buchanan101, Apple Fritters at Brandegg are well worth trying after a lovely run down from Kleine Scheidegg, Brandegg does not get the sun on its terrasse until later in the afternoon, of it's cold go inside to the back of the restaurant and have table service rather than self service, prices are pretty much the same and you don't have everyone constantly coming in and out around you.

Assume that's the slooooow gondola in the top picture?
I have my prescription pink tinted Oakley's ready for the flat light - supposed to be the best colour for those conditions - great at brightening up a dull day on the golf course so we shall see (hopefully not!)
Some significant snow showing up now on Bergfex for Monday, otherwise reasonably sunny this week with a few showers, and cold it seems...

|
|
|

Yeah that's the one. No problems finding empty gondolas at the mid-station this afternoon, and the run down was really good. To be honest Männlichen is a poor choice on a flat light day, but the cable car is only 100 yards from our place and we'd just missed a train.

Great pictures - please keep them coming!
Noticed on some brochure costings (a chalet one) that THIS was the "peakest" week of the season not next week as other countries are on half term this week... How are the queues? What does Switzerland do for Fasching as that's next week and was big in Kitzbuhel.
Will keep a look out for the orange and purple ensemble next week!
Weather forecast doesn't look too bad at the moment for this week (you should get some sun) and start of next, with possibility of a fair amount of snow on Monday though that's dropped a bit on latest forecast....
Noticed that cloud rolling over the Jungfrau on webcams earlier - the webcams at the top didn't show much of a view

This week and the next 2 will pretty much be equally busy - every bed in the villages will be occupied. We didn’t go up until lunchtime today and there were no queues at all, but it will have been busier this morning and we avoided Scheidegg completely. Fasching varies according to location here, ranging from hardly anything happening (here) to going completely crazy (Basel).

@jonm, you're welcome, and thanks for the nice feedback
It snowed lightly all night. Not enough to materially affect the skiing, but it did cover the ice that’s been plaguing the village for the last few days so we could walk around without crampons. The fog is still here from village level up to about 2400 metres, and it's even thicker than yesterday. On days like this in the Jungfrau region you have 3 choices:
1. Abandon all thoughts of skiing and go shopping in Interlaken, Thun or Bern, (we did this),
2. Go to the Schilthorn and go up and down the piste from the top all day,
3. Go ski touring, and try to get high enough to get above the clouds. Some friends did this. They got the bus from Grindelwald up to Bussalp (1800m), then skinned up to the Faulhorn at 2681m. Hard work but unbelievable views.

We've barely had 6 all season, but hope springs, as they say.

we got lucky last week and enjoyed 3 bluebird days out of the 4 days we skied!
first time to this area and we loved it, staying in Grindelwald but skied the whole area. I was a tad apprehensive about using the train to get up the hill but it's just so calm and easy. We even got over to Schilthorn on Wednesday and although a bit of a trek it was well worth the effort and also had a little play in Murren too.
Would return in a heartbeat.

We probably skied past you last week we were staying in Wengen but got down Grindelwald a couple of times on Red 23. What an epic run and always quiet! - also our first time to the area and had 5 bluebirds out of 6 and the day we missed was a full days snow so our last day was epic.
We're the same as you we'd go back in a heartbeat, it took a little time to figure out the trains but it's very civilised and we also all noticed the lack of idiots and the higher standard of behaviour and skiing. A great place we will return.

@marksovereign, we were enjoying piste 23 too until our friend said we should try the blue, 22, which i'm pleased we did as it is such a pretty trail meandering and criss crossing with the stream all the way down to the valley floor. and conveniently finishing at the train station!

Not much to photograph today. Poor-ish weather but good skiing and empty slopes in Murren. On a half term holiday Sunday...?!
Carnage on black 12 that Ski Miguel guide took us down in poor visibility... “oh didn’t realise they hadn’t pisted it”... black 9 was fine!

Heavy snow on the way home from the pub, should be good when the sun comes out. Yup, Mürren is never busy.

Good fall of snow. Pistes tricky with choppy snow. Off piste looked good but didn’t try much. Visibility surprisingly ok, better later as sun cam out. Next two days hopefully full sun before (hopefully not) rain to high levels on Thursday

Wasn’t too cold at all..!
You did that earlier than we did. We’ve worked out to go to Innerwengen to avoid uphill bits.
Someone didn’t design the mountains right (!) with poling needed more often than am used to. Those rope tows are lovely.
Favourite run: back under the EasyJet chair. Despite the lift being very busy, very few use it as a way to do that run. They can’t all be doing blacks towards Wixi. Very strange.
Rode the Fallboden....
Busy over in Mannlichen so mainly skied around Kleine Scheidegg.

Does anybody know the status of the Gold Hill "leaders", instructors, ski hosts?
The group work out of Lauterbrunnen and their blue & yellow kit has a striking resemblance to the Jack Wolfskin logo. One of the leaders had a group (class) spread 20m across an available piste width of 30m.
I politely pointed out to the group that they were blocking the piste and addressing the young lady told her to sort them out.
I am seriously concerned if the young lady is BASI qualified, her training failed miserably! Thoughts appreciated.
