too right. Knows a thing or two, Santa.
tafflondon, quite right. I did once have rather hard-up sailing friends (a couple) who bought each other a fender for Christmas.

I had a boat once. As a hobby it made ski-ing look cheap by comparison

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

extra good karma with the fatman in red to the first person to find (or even build) a definitive list of tyre makes/models that carry the severe conditions/snowflake&mountain symbol. Would make life a lot easier for people trying to find the true specialist tools (and filter out the various hybrid/all weather type styles (a la M+S) that serve only to complicate things)
have at it googlers

barry, I can start a list. Dunlop 3D sports have the mountain and the snowflake (Severe conditions) symbols - they look great tyres to me, not that I know anything about tyres really, but they look the business

As with many other things in life "you gets what you pay for". The ÖAMTC (Austrian) and ADAC (German) automobile associations do regular tests. If you go for one of their better rated tyres (as opposed to super cheap no name tyres) you can't go far wrong.

barry, Trust the internet - there is a whole website here dedicated to winter tires - I bet if you posted a question about needing a list here someone in one of the forums could also help. They also seem to test and review them. Why not have a look and see what you think. http://www.snowtire.info/forum/portal.php?page=6

any decent tyre specialist suppliers should have no problem at all advising people which are snow tyres, with the snowflake symbol. Just a question of knowing what question to ask. Keeping a list up to date would be a mammoth task - and an out of date list would be useless. It's not difficult to get info on the internet (including Snowheads) when needed.

fair enough all, i dont need a list, i've been wintering with tyres long enough to know what i want and need, i just thought that the length and frequency of the threads on here would warrant a more consolidated resourse for the less experienced with such things, the first time you do it you can be a bit spoiled (or confused) for choice.
Good to see there's a couple of fairly comprehensive resources out there. Should sticky them all onto a closed thread somewhere for new punters?

Well I can recommend Event Tyres. Came to my house and fitted my four new winter tyres at 8am this morning - brilliant service.

What's not romantic about snow chains as a present?
Perfume means I want you to smell nice
Jewelery/Clothes mean I want you to look nice
Snow chains mean I want you to come home to me safely |
I prefer,
'i want you (as the permanent designated driver) to drive me home from the Pub safely'

Add these to the list - Vredestein Wintrac Extreme - pal had them on his Range Rover last year and never missed a beat.
And reccomendations for best winter tyres 2011 here http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2011-Winter-Tyre-Buying-Guide.htm

leedsunited, I had a look at that link and was well satisfied to see my 3D Dunlop Wintersports had performed well last year - thanks for finding that.
