Light snow in Madonna now, no wind so what falls on the pistes will stay there. This is earlier than forecast, which is encouraging.

Another good drop today for La Clusaz and it’s certainly not looking like stopping. It’s also set to continue well into tomorrow

We're around Monterosa next week. Been a desert since December. Finally catching something today but 12 degrees in the valley on Friday so don't think much will be left unfortunately. Real shame on first trip for 4 years. Just hope artificial stuff holds up well enough for kids lessons as their first time.

@Jonpim, over in Austria there seems to be reasonable agreement developing between Bergfex and SnowForecast (that must use different sources as they often don't agree)
e.g. Zell am See: moderate to heavy snow Monday through to Tuesday morning, followed by sun and some cloud...
Guess who is quite happy right now (arriving Sunday)
They seem fairly dedicated skiers in Zell today - lifts at 25% utilisation and it's tipping down (with snow)

@Alpinebear, any forecast, obey the 3 day rule. It’s only getting accurate, followed by the 7 day rule, 50/50, followed by anything longer, - academic discussion by meteorological professionals, which I like to read but are more hope than anything else. A lot better than a simple guess though.

@Deibitto I've looked at thr multimodel for La Thuile and Cervinia as we'er there next week also. There is a bit of a peak temp this thursday still, but it's looking less high for less time than it was. There's also looking like a decent amount of snow for Sun/Mon - still some way off but fingers crossed.

No problem looking further ahead than 3 days, when you use Meteoblue's multimodel forecast.
https://www.meteoblue.com/en/weather/forecast/multimodel/valmeinier_france_2970873?fcstlength=168
You just need to know how to interpret a chart with mutliple models alongside
When the models agree (= the lines are close together), forecast reliability is high. When the lines deviate between models, reliability is low.
For instance the graph below.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/38prNHYydFBwrz6N8
As you can see, reliability is low on friday 18th (wildly diverging lines) and then better again saturday 19 till monday 21.
Massive snowfall forecast for sunday and monday. Really hoping this forecast remains.
NB: I can't seem to paste google photos links here, in the way that they display by themselves, so you need to click the link

@MHskier, Hope so. Think I'll just look away now and hope for best! Difficulty with Macugnaga is it's a double-edged sword; a lot of precipitation that doesn't get low enough in altitude will mess up the kid's slopes which are at 1,350 - 1,900M, but they need more depth up high to open up any advanced terrain which are at 2.2 - 3kM. So we need both low enough temps and precipitation really which looking at forecasts is asking a lot!

Hi Guys
I have trawled through a few of these pages and wondered if someone wouldn't mind summarising the general situation?
I haven't skied in 3 years because of covid- and I'm really keen to get back at it again. I generally do guided intermediate off piste stuff.
I have a few friends who are going to Val Thorens in mid March. It will be difficult for me to get the time off and a few things are making the trip tricky for me.
So im looking at the snow gods to try and get an idea on whether a fantastic trip is likely.
Am I right in thinking that the snow has been really hit and miss this season? That whilst most places are skiable it's not looking like an epic season ? And that there's not much of a base layer of snow in most places- and so a few hot days can really hammer a spot worse than normal?
Any general advice would be excellent thanks. I won't be leaving the UK for at least 3 weeks so I guess a lot can change. But so far am I right in thinking it's really not great ?
Thanks

@billy_boy_2010, by far the best snow so far as been in Austria, the worst has been in the SW Alps (Milky Way etc). Dolomites haven’t had much.
The snow in Austria is great - there’s enough there to last well in to March.

@billy_boy_2010, if your asking if the snow will be good in Val Thorens in mid march the answer is yes , there is plenty at that height there to last to the end of April and it’s very likely to snow a lot in between now and then .

Looks like power cuts in parts of the south Midlands and northern England by Friday.
At least the network companies have had plenty of recent practice and should be able to fix problems quickly.
Apparently there is a good chance of amber alerts for high wind speeds extending south and probably a snow warning for the north too. Stay safe.

@billy_boy_2010, here's the comparitive snow depth in switzerland at least, apart from ticino, its at or above average. From my perspective, I've skiied pretty much every weekend since Nov, its not been a bad season at all. Was able to ski tour in the Jura in early Dec, and my local wee mountain has 165 cm of snow at 1600m.

Low level 50 mph gusts caused our office to close this afternoon in Wensleydale. Carnt log on from home so presumably the power is still off. Friday currently looking very windy across the south of England with widespread gusts of 70mph forecast and some places 80mph. You probably won’t want to spend much time under heavy trees on Friday! Hope no one has to suffer the 6 day power cuts that affected many after Storm Arwen. The weather enthusiasts are predicting a red warning somewhere in the south. No doubt it will be well reported by the media!
The current yellow weather warning for northern England and southern Scotland on Friday is suggesting up to 25cms of snow, in some favoured places. But will it be cold enough for that and where will those favoured places be? Will the high Pennine roads still be passable on Saturday?
Meanwhile more snow falling at Glencoe over the next 3 days and eventually a moderate fall of snow in the Cairngorms on Friday. Lots going on this week.

@Peter S, didnt Hawes have 100mph winds recorded yesterday
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Smokin Joe, Wether Fell above Hawes recorded a gust of 100mph which was probably what knocked the power out. The Mountain Weather Information Service forecast potential for 90mph gusts on the tops yesterday so good call by them.
Across the south the widespread forecast of 80mph gusts at low level, probably explain the Cobra meeting today….and the fact that it may affect the capital

If you were booking a trip for the 5th March, where are you heading considering the current snow bases, and forecasts? I know it's still a couple of weeks away but from what I can see there seems to be a vast contrast across the alps this year.
Just trying to decide on somewhere to pull the trigger on for a trip.

@Fridge03
I have the same dilemma- although I'm leaving a week after you. The nice people below commented and the snow really isn't that bad.
@bunchanan101 @Rob Mackley @ coddlesangers
Thanks for the reassurance. I'm desperate to get in so I will book and take the plunge. Hope the snow gods will look favourably on us

@Fridge03, @billy_boy_2010, I would be looking at the northern Alps. More specifically that would be France (north of Grenoble), Switzerland (apart from Ticino) or Austria (apart from Carinthia).
5th March is a bit too far away to be more specific than that.

@Peter S, the reason that the impact on London is relevant is the concentration of population and infrastructure within a complex urban environment. The impact of such potentially high winds during daytime hours in such a densely populated location substantially multiplies both potential economic impact and risk to life. Given that I’d have thought it makes sense for the government to take steps to understand and manage the possible impact. To not do so would be both careless and I’d have thought foolish. It might seem disproportionate, but hardly some weird conspiracy and surely sensible?
Edit: And there’s no suggestion that the consideration or response is uniquely London focussed either.

Looks like a new wind speed record for southern England was reached of 122mph. Impressive.
The 197mph reached in Shetland in 1992 must have been staggering though I see that was unofficial as the equipment was then destroyed

Just about literally blown off the mountain in Zell am See today. Breiteckbahn 6 man chair inching forward - two men pushing the chairs round the top wheel as the canopy was acting as a sail- the whole lift was making strange clunking noises.

My skis of course never left LHR. Good old BA. They are now in Vienna. Some clown had routed them today on a non existent connecting Austrian flight from Vienna to Salzburg so someone in Vienna has now routed them to Salzburg on Lufthansa tomorrow… via Frankfurt, ffs!!

might be dumping down in some places but no prospect of snow on the horizon for Madonna in Italy and we are heading there on the 3rd March.... we were very lucky with weather and snow for a 3 day trip to Les Carroz at the start of Feb , looks like our luck wont hold out for Italy

Looks dry in 3 and a half weeks?
Do the models even look out that far? I would think a lot could change in that time even if it appears a big high pressure system will dominate.
The kind weather geeks might chime in to educate us.
