Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving to alps - stops en-route

 Poster: A snowHead

This thread has understandably concentrated on overnight stops for the French Alps, but if anyone is driving to the Austrian Alps I can highly recommend the hotel Eisbach in the village of Ransbach- Baumbach in West Germany, just a bit north of Koblenz. It's just about 2 km off of the A3 (E35) junction 38. It's good value and has a good restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating if the weather is good. There's free parking at the rear of the hotel. There's also a filling station in the village which has cheaper fuel prices.

The hotel is on both hotels.com and booking.com, but you can book directly on the website link I gave. I've stayed there several times.

With Le Shuttle/Eurotunnel now booked, browsing through here for an alternative to our usual stops, as many of them are closed on 3rd January. I was trying to avoid central Reims, as much as we like the Hotel Bristol and it's ease of access to the autoroute, it can be quite noisy being right on Place d'Erlon until the early hours. Has anyone stayed in the Hotel Crystal? It is almost next door, but it seems the entrance is set back off the main street. Or any other alternatives? We prefer independent hotels with a reasonable bistro either in hotel or a short walk away. Gourmet cuisine not essential, but needs to be better than fast food. Dog-friendly of course. Somewhere between Northern Reims and Chalons-en-Champagne preferred as we have an early start from Durham on the Friday morning. There must be some more hidden gems around.

@Hells Bells, have you ever tried the ferry from Hull?
Can't be more than 90mins from Durham.
I live in N. Wales we would never consider any other route to get to the "othe side " of the channel.
Having had the overnight on board we smash the drive in 1 day.

Well 2 weeks today we’ll be in Le Taos and I’m getting very excited with all my gear out of the loft and strewn across the house annoying my wife.

However, we’ve still got to get there.

We are planning to drive from Bristol on the Thursday and stop when it gets dark so somewhere after Troyes and before Beaune most likely.

My greatest concern is having our gear nicked from a full car overnight.

Can anyone recommend some hotels in that range with secure parking or where we can park where we can see the car from the room?

Just the regularly-mentioned Le Val Moret at Magnant, south of Troyes, 5 minutes off the autoroute. A Logis de France motel where you park the car right outside the room. Has a swimming pool, as well as a nice but unpretentious restaurant.

Logis also have a very good loyalty programme, called O’Logis. You accrue €uro credits with each stay and related spending such as meals and they convert to euro vouchers quite quickly. Doesn’t cost anything so if you plan to stay at a Logis you might as well sign up beforehand.

Indeed, the Logis hotels website lets you view their hotels via the map, and they usually have one with the sort of parking you prefer. Logis is good for a midrange budget (and ideal if you have a soft spot for traditional hotels).

People seem paranoid about having stuff nicked but in years of reading accounts of people driving to and from ski holidays I don't remember any tales of thefts.

We're driving on 20/21 December so I've booked a hotel in St Quentin (left it too late last year and there were only expensive rooms left. But driving in a quiet time I'd not book ahead - I think it's good to be flexible. Sometimes you resent stopping if you feel good for another couple of hours, whereas other times (e.g. because of heavy fog) you need to get off the road earlier than planned.

@Origen, why would you have a foam pillow? You always take your own

If people are concerned about theft the simple solution is to take your stuff to the room

For a budget option I can recommend the IBIS Reims Thillois.

The parking is outdoor but behind a barrier with code access, so you are unlikely to get your vehicle nicked. As others have said, I always take my luggage inside anyway. It does not take long.

It is right next to a large entertainment plaza. There are several places to eat, but I have always used the large all you can eat place. There is a wide variety of choice and if you don't like the hot buffet, they will cook your steak or fish to order.

Just south of Reims. 15 mins off the motorway. It's a farmhouse in a very quiet village. Very safe parking. Lovely rooms. Delightful host, plus she will cook you a superb dinner. I just hope it's not full of snowheads next time I try to book.

Thank you everyone. We have booked here now. Very much looking forward to it and the start of the season.

Especially as over 1m fresh snow forecast for Tignes next week

We are looking for somewhere for Friday 3rd Jan as a lot of our usual stops are closed. We're leaving Durham at 6am and driving South, usually stop around Reims. Val Moret is too far South. Hotel needs to be dog-friendly with either a restaurant on site or very close by. Parking would be a bonus and not in a city centre. Nice village would be our preference, not averse to a chambre d'hote with meal option.

We're going feb half term with the kids. Leaving on friday midday to get a 3.30 train and hopefully all the way down to Macon for a stopover.

Has anyone stayed there or nearby? Would love some recommendations.

Also what is an appropriate time to leave in the morning to get to Alp D'huez?

Macon is 3 hours in normal conditions to ADH. At HT if you want a smooth run I would be leaving at 5am.

I am worried your maths don't add up. 3:30 train is leaving Calais at 17:10 French time. It would be ambitious in the summer to get to Macon before midnight with family in tow. There is a lot on this on this site and most would suggest either 1: miss a days school and go earlier if stop-over planned in Burgundy, 2: stop earlier and accept traffic will be slow in the next morning or do it as a oner. On your time scale 2 x 2 hour sleep stops and other breaks gets you to resort first thing.

@bbski, I was wondering that too, I would be aiming for Beaune or Dijon at the furthest. You only need a short delay, and it all goes pear-shaped.

Hotel BB chains have always worked for us for years (decades!). Secure car parks, decent breakfast buffet, and very good for price.
Originally we’d get a family room, and the 4 kids would sleep in the double bed and MrsDoccam and I would take the mezzanine beds. Often we’d rock up at well gone midnight but if we were earlier we’d have a Buffalo Grill (usually one on the same complex) steak supper.
In fact we are driving to Macon Hotel BB this Xmas week - although 3 rooms now need to be booked!

Can you post a link to Hotel BB please. Is it a chain or collective? When I search I just get B&B hits with Google

I've been wondering this too as we are heading there the half term sat although we are staying in Annecy for the night so hoping we are going against most of the traffic. Only every driven to Val D'Isuere and we always left around 7am to avoid the morning queues but its a but of a funnel for loads of routes where as it feel Alpe D'Huez isn't as bad but I may be miss-judging that.

Also don't want to get into resort too early as we can't get into the accommodation till much later

We don’t have to be at the hotel at midnight. Any kip in a bed is good. Seems like as long as we get to Grenoble between 8-9 it won’t be standstill.

@Wilip, you probably need to make sure you book into a Ibis, Campanile, Premiere Classe or similar to make sure you get a 24 hour reception, and access to a room. Logis hotels are all independent, so will probably close thier reception at 10ish.

@rickboden, we stay with Valerie every winter on our way from Yorkshire to Chamonix. They are a lovely family with the best trained dog I have ever encountered. If I had seen your post earlier I would have asked you to say hello.

The food is great, if somewhat in conflict with my usual keto-lite!
