Sorry to derail the thread for a non-weather question. I was about to book Wengen for Jan 18th for 7 nights then noticed the Lauberhorn is on that weekend. How busy are the pistes likely to be that week? Likewise the village?

Busy but still great fun. You can ski pretty much everywhere even though they have set up the worlds longest downhill.
Mürren and Grindelwald are always avaliable.

@Rogerdodger, is that generally the whole week, or just the weekend? I’ve no issues if it is just the weekend, as we won’t be skiing until the Sunday anyway.

@george89, We have the slalom on Sunday afternoon, this has no impact whatsoever on skiing at Männlichen or Kleine Scheidegg, and after that all the spectators, athletes, media etc go home. The slalom and downhill courses will be closed for a few days while all the netting, TV stuff and the grandstands are dismantled. It’s a good week to be in Wengen.

Absolutely no issue at all, the Lauberhorn is run on Sat. Slalom on Sunday which is much quieter. During your week you can watch the enormous job of stripping the catch netting and all other course furniture.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

too late to suggest staying in the better village, Mürren?
You know it makes sense.

@Chris Brookes, haha! Not quite yet, waiting for a good price. What’s the village and hiking like up in Mürren? I only managed to visit Grindelwald when I was in Wengen earlier this year, which I thought was quite charmless. I assume Mürren is significantly nicer.
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

Much better snow, lovely hiking routes (easy to hard) and the village is full of charm and car-free....

On the 13th October means saying goodbye - for the last time the cable car transports guests from Birg to Schilthorn and return on that day. Then working on the piz gloria for 5 months. The enormously tight space conditions on the mountain do not allow it to simultaneously push the new building forward and keep the existing railway running. The old railway will be dismantled and in a short time the new railway will be built on almost the same route. Another challenge of the Silthornbahn 20XX.
Although the summit experience at the highest point - at Schilthorn - is not possible this winter - but don’t worry, the ski area Mürren - Schilthorn is open and offers convenient access to the winter sports area with the newly opened section from Stechelberg to Mürren and further to Birg. Thanks to the new, steepest cable car in the world from Stechelberg to Mürren, waiting times will not be an issue. So a visit is worth it sometimes!

@Alastair Pink, we're going up for one last ride to the top on Saturday
I have been invited to the opening of the 1st and 2nd sections in December of the Schilthornbahn20xx.
That's the sections from Stechelberg to Mürren and from Mürren up to Birg?

@Chris Brookes, I wonder what they'll do with it? Perhaps someone will buy it and convert it into a bar like the old cable car outside the hotel Jungfrau in Mürren.

@Chris Brookes, any news on the Inferno this winter? Happening at all? Route?

@telford_mike, isn't it starting from Birg as lift access to the Schilthorn won't be possible?

The start will be from Seewlifuren at the beginning of the Engetal and can be reached from the Birg middle station.

Popped over to Mürren today. The new cable car from Stechelberg was being tested. A cabin arriving at the top station.
This is the bottom station of the Mürren to Birg section. The old station (right of picture) is still operating, and apparently it can be run in parallel with the new one if necessary.
I was surprised how busy Mürren was - most hotels are still open, and almost all of the shops.

SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX - Construction prop 1
You might think that the constructions worker come from the circus - agile and nimble, they climb up and down the prop 1 at dizzying heights, well secured - every move fits and the well-coordinated cooperation is noticeable.
The weather is not always a great team player - if the snow falls innocently and quietly it means that even more caution is required! What's good for the ski season is not practical for the construction site. It quickly becomes slippery, work progresses more slowly and the cold becomes more severe.
Inferno - not much imagination. Make them walk to the top as 1928!!

@stanton, Section 1 of the Schilthornbahn20XX project (the direct cable car from Stechelberg to Mürren) will be the steepest cable car in the world with a maximum inclination of 159.4% (57.9°). It's due to open on 13th December.

I just received today the 2024 DHO Journal. Some interesting articles in there (obviously including some related to the upcoming DHO centenary next year), but I also noticed some relating to recent changes in the dining available in the region.
Firstly I see that Sina's pub in Wengen is now offering asian cuisine in the Lecker Asia restaurant. It's owned by Vanessa Cova and her Califonian partner Alexander Chan. I wonder @telford_mike, have you eaten there yet?
Secondly I knew that the Hotel Bellevue in Mürren (a popular lunch spot with its large open air terrace at the rear, I was always partial to the fish and chips and chicken in a basket which they served there ) had been sold by its owner Othmar Suter. Apparently the hotel has been bought by a French Moroccan design guru Ramdane Touhami who has renamed it the hotel Drei Berge and has redesigned the interior and taken it upmarket catering for a wealthy international clientele (with prices to match!). Sadly I don't think I'll be frequenting it much in future.
Finally I note that the Hotel Bären in Wengen has been renamed the Alpenkräuter Hotel Bären by its long standing owner Willy Brunner to reflect the fact that recently he has moved increasingly to using locally collected edible herbs from the fields and forests to use in the hotel's cuisine.

Very long shot from our place this morning, another new piece of rolling stock for the BLM, on its way up to Winteregg.
Take a look behind the scenes of the first tests and commissioning in the framework of the project #Schilthornbahn20XX. The under-load container is automatically attached to the steepest commute in the world - thanks to a specially developed crane system!

Yes, a couple of times. If you like Ramen it’s very good, and Alex is a nice guy. It’s still like Sina's pub inside, but they had a refurb in the spring which spruced things up a bit.

New valley station at Stechelberg.
A cabin left the station - really fast. It’s certainly a very steep ascent.

Having read through posts on here for the past couple of years I have booked a trip to Grindelwald for early January staying at Hotel Derby. Never been to the Jungfrau region in winter, been to Wengen in summer many years ago. Lift infrastructure looks a bit more advanced than then. In the thread it suggests hiring skis from burisport, assume that as we are staying at the Derby best to use the shop that is 100m from the station. Do people use the trains a lot to get around with skis or take the bus to the lift station?

The trains are geared up for your skis @somborneski, . They stand in a rack you sit down, relax and take in the scenery. Options from hotel Derby, old train down to Grund then up to Kleine Scheidegg. Alternatively the main train (Interlaken bound) 2 mins down to Terminal which is the huge bottom station of 2 gondolas. The enormous Eiger express and the slightly smaller Maenlichen gondola.
Your only bus ride is through Grindelwald to get to Firstbahn, this is the stand - alone area.

Thanks . @Rogerdodger, that makes sense now. We‘re coming from Geneva by train so will probably see the gondola station on the way up.
