Conditions are pretty grim right now. I was there this past week and it was rain below about 2500m which continued to ruin everything below Schilthorn. Icy/hard early and slush by late morning even near the tops of Mannlichen/Lauberhorn. Even the bottom half of the Rigglie/Birg area was crunchy Thursday after the snow. There were a bunch fresh powder lines to grab off Schilthorn/Birg/Kandahar though.
The only valley run left open now is the blue from Eigergletscher to Grund, but it's no longer possible to ski from Grund to Terminal. The red piste to terminal is completely gone under Holenstien and the red/blue run from First to the bus stop bar is also gone/closed, so you have to unload down from Bort. It's horrible how much snow has melted from when I was there in mid February. At least the views are still amazing when it's clear (Jungfrau region is one of my favorites in the Alps). |
Rather over the top skiing above 1700metre is very good and ample snow depth

We were up earlier and it's building up nicely at Eigergletscher @Jill t,
Temp was around -2 and falling steadily. Snowing below Brandegg as we left Grindy.

Well that's it for 2024, my 90 days are running out. What a lovely morning to finish.
The thermometer in Lauterbrunnen reading 8.8 did not look promising but we headed to Kleine Scheidegg. Snowfall just above Allmend was a nice surprise. When the train is held up short of KS station for snow clearing purposes things are really looking interesting.
A long coffee meeting at the rendezvous, the bahnhof then out to play! I wish my IT skills were better as I have a delightful photograph of a piste basher on the railway station! (I don't know how to upload pics) The staff simply could not shift the volume of snow building up on the station.
In spite of fairly high wind speeds the snow was light enough to be very enjoyable. In places we skied more than 20cms.....on piste. We had the odd glimmer of sun and good definition to ski some of our favourite off-piste pitches.
A lovely way to wind up what has been a frustrating season where snow and weather has been concerned.

Nice skiing at Kleine Scheidegg this morning. Pistes were soft but not slushy, visibility just about ok (the Sahara sand helps). Very few people skiing, most pistes were deserted.
Warm weather forecast for the weekend.

Just viewed a few lovely movie clips of friends up on Lauberhorn. Deep , untracked powder and very few people up there skiing it.

I was there this February, the village of Lauterbrunnen felt cheap (not the restaurants and shop prices!) and catering for hordes of tourists on buses.
Huge contrast to Grindelwald, on the other side of the mountains.
The more you step away from the asphalt, the prettier it gets. Access to the waterfalls is closed in winter time natürlich due to the risk of stone falling

Fallboden lift to be replaced, new lift open for season 2026/27.
First gondola to be replaced. 3 options are being considered for the base station location:
- keep it close to the existing valley station,
- build a new base station next to the railway station,
- expand the V-bahn terminal at Grund and build it there.

Thanks for that @telford_mike, some interesting ideas. I have to confess that I am amazed that a replacement Fallboden is under consideration. If a lift is built let's hope that the new top station is high side of the railway line to eradicate the rope tow and "skate" through the tunnel.
The Firstbahn ideas are simply fascinating but the planning may be more complex than that of Eiger express.

Solar farm planned for the Schiltgrat area!
Due to the federal government's regulation to increase the production of renewable energy, the planning of such a plant does not require its own land use plan. However, both the Schilt-Busen mountain community as the landowner and the local community must agree to the project. In Lauterbrunnen, the local council has the authority to decide whether to accept the project. There is a 30-day referendum period.
The necessary votes have been cast for the referendum. Voters will now decide on the municipality's approval at the municipal assembly on June 17, 2024.
If the decision is positive, the initiators can continue to push forward with the project development in the Schilt area and submit the building application in June 2024. Ten percent of the plant is to be commissioned by the end of 2025. Full operation is then to begin by 2030 at the latest.

Hello,
My wife and I are travelling to the Jungfrau region next year and we would like to do some sledging, so we are hoping to plan the trip for peak snow conditions. We have booked the week of January 11th-18th, are all of the runs including the valley runs to the villages typically open during this time? Is this generally when the best snow conditions occur?
Also, how much snow depth is typically required for tobogganing runs to be open? I've been referencing this website for historical snow depths over the last several years but not quite sure how to put it in context: https://skiweather.eu/snowdata/grindelwald/426#spytop
Lastly, I've also been referencing this website for historic snowfall per week: https://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Grindelwald/history This shows week 2 of January having the most snowfall of the year for the bottom of the mountain in Grindelwald, so I was thinking this week could be best for the valley runs to be open. Is this the proper understanding?
Thanks!

We now have the option to choose either Jan 18th - Jan 26th or Jan 25th - Feb 2nd. Is one of these typically better for snow cover, including on the valley runs?

Cool, we'll book for then, thanks. We're staying half of our trip in Gimmelwald/Mürren, I would imagine that area is typically pretty blanketed in snow that week? Of course I know it's impossible to predict for sure in any given year.

One more question, would this time period/last week of January generally be considered as having the best chances for peak snow conditions and snow coverage, particularly in the valleys? Or is there another week or time period you would recommend?
We've been running into alot of conflicting information on when the odds are best for peak snow. Thanks!

@telford mike That is pretty crazy. The webcams from this past year do look completely different than any other year- looks like hardly any snow in February at all.

I think we should have a full Inferno in Jan 2025.
This means snow and more importantly low temperatures to provide the period for track preparation and race weekend.
Let us hope so!

I must correct my earlier post. In 2025 it will not be possible to have a full Inferno regardless of snow conditions.
Schilthorn will not be accessible with the closure of the cable car. One assumes the race will start from Birg or the top of Engetal.

The cabins of the first Schilthornbahn20XX section between Stechelberg and Mürren are now hanging on the cables.
This cable car between Stechelberg and Mürren will be the world’s steepest commuter car ever put into operation, with an impressive (maximum) ascent of 159.4% (or if you want that in degrees that's 57.9º). The first section opens to the public on 13th December 2024.
