meteoexploration is more optimistic for tomorrow in St Anton (17 cm) and also meteoblue. From wednesday 17th onwards it looks like more snow, but that is too far away.

Thursday's Snow
Yes, it will snow tomorrow but this will be mainly on the Western Ridges, Stuben , Ulmer Hutte Alpe Rauz, Lech Zurs The precipitation is not expected to amount to very much ( 5-15 mm!!!)
Hopefully we will get some tail dust in St Anton.
The Hairdryer (Fohn) from the south will be turned on again for Opening Day (Friday)

@stanton, PowderGuide are still fairly optimistic for middle/late next week (and they're normally prety accurate for these parts, being based in IBK).

Wow this is getting a bit depressing, i notice on the webcams the snow cannons arent even on today and the green patches are returning. Does anyone know how much terrian is likely to be available for the official opening tomorrow?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Yes, depressing. I suppose that if the Fohn is expected, they are likely wasting their time with cannons down the valley. Hopefully a real (and permanent) cold patch arrives soon (by mid next-week when my holiday starts would be nice.)

This might be good time to book next December's trip. Reckon any of the swanky hotels would be inclined to offer discounts now?

Possibly. Personally, I'll never book in advance again for a trip this early in the season.

@kitenski, considering what's open and opening tomorrow over this way I'd be amazed if Stuben couldn't open at least some terrain.

Nothing open in Stuben Friday according to new left company release.
They will release another one im sure for Saturday & Sunday.
It may look white but the cover is not enough to drive the groomers over or ski.yet.

Xmas is another 2 weeks. One major dump can change things

I know it's a generally useless exercise to compare, but any historical precedence for such a horrible start to the year having some decent bright spots later in the season? Just looking for some hope. I've had great seasons marginalized by warm weather then cold weather a few weeks before a trip, so I'm sure the opposite is true, witha poor start salvaged overnight. What's concerning is the ,poor base and it's ability to withstand warms spells throughout the year.

Anyone heading to St.Anton today? Would be good to get a first hand report . Heading down from Norway for Xmas, hopefully what has happened on the West Coast here in the last few days happens in the Alps sooner rather than later.

@Juddernaut, No big mountains here though, maybe I'll check some in on the plane to bring down. Heading to Roldal this afternoon, they've had about 70cm in the past 3 days

Nice day on the hill. Not many people at all. Just sliding up & down Osthang & tanzboden... thats It!
Think there be getting more open once they blown sufficient kunstschnee over the pistes.

Nice to hear something vaguely positive after a lot of negativity recently. Obviously the lack of snow is pretty acute but sub-par skiing is better than none imho

Redwine, quite a few of the late 1980s and early 90s winters had very poor starts. It was worse then because of the alck of snow making infrastructure.
It is sometimes said that skiing is really a 'Spring' sport. Certainly the snow cover is more reliable in April than it is in December, at least above 1800m.

Hmmm ... We're heading out to St Anton on the 20th, not looking great
The Galzig webcam looks ok: http://webtv.feratel.com/webtv/?cam=5691 but it'll be carnage come Christmas week if that's the only place open.
Anyone got any ideas for a Plan B? Is transport to another resort (Ischgl maybe????) feasible?

Anyone thinking of going to another resort, bear in mind it will be double, triple carnage in those places & will no t be very nice experience.
Ischgl is already packed today !!!
I would try and reschedule your trip to later in the season.
The weather is uncertain for next week a mix of Fohn & possible Snow but its to difficult to predict with the current patterns.
Farmers say its the warmest its been as long as they can remember & they cannot see any change.

Rescheduling is not an option unfortunately, all booked and paid for (Crystal).
Just have to make the most of it, take my walking boots maybe
I know the risks of course, just been ok in previous years. One year we went to La Plagne for Christmas, a week before there was nothing - the webcams showed brown fields. Then there was a huge dump a couple of days before we flew out and the skiing was great.
Should be able to get another trip in (France probably) later in the season.

@stanton, yes me too, can't really change without costing me on hotel (50% paid for) and the flights, although will cost more to actually go and fulfil the trip. Happy to take the chance and as @ecsleath, says there are always further opportunities to go again later in season

@ecsleath, @benburton83,
If you do not ask you do not get. I do not think
its an unreasonable request Or even
relocate to winter sun.
I personally would not buy a week lift pass right now
If they do not open more.
Ski resorts are expensive places to hangout in if your
not skiing.
Taking a loss is sometimes better than going
Being dissapointed & spending even more!!
Lets see what the Lift Company has open tomorrow & sunday

Saturday 13th Lift Company Status.
Run 17 opens.
Read carefully. No skiing possible between Galzig & Ulmer Hutte.
To ski Run 17 you need to take bus or Car to Alpe Rauz Car Park

Good post. Looking at posts in other threads, people based in the resorts either permanently or for the season can afford to be calm and phlegmatic about a few weeks of mild weather with little or no snow.
Likewise those with plenty of disposable income who can afford to travel at the drop of a hat.
However for those that are limited to one or two weeks due to time, family and/or cost constraints, the fact that "it is a lovely cold morning" or "similar happened in 200x but it bucketed down two weeks later" is of little or no comfort.
May be too late for those booked in next week or two but as you say, a travel company certainly can't help if you don't ask.
