Hi Carolyn. I,ve just found this forum and must say how useful it looks. I'm coming out on the 10th with two friends who will be trying skiing for the first time, in their sixties. I hoped that they might receive their early tuition on the nursery slopes in the village because it looks so beautiful. Do you think this will happen or will they have to go up in the cable car to get suitable snow?

Morning, will do my best with the snow!! The village slopes are still ok, and perfectly suitable for beginners, too. There is also suitable terrain up the gondola, so you should be fine whatever happens. I was at the Kropfrader with my group yesterday and conditions were perfect, with more sunny weather forecasted for today. Bring your friends to the Red Ski School, and all will be well, I'm sure

I think they might be booked with the Reds, Carolyn so they will be in good hands. Thank you very much for the update. Really looking forward to our first trip to Niederau.

Kevin Mc - It would be still be worth going up the Gondola after a few days in ski school and trying the more challenging nursery run at the top...great views and snow conditions were better up there. Nice to ski down to the Hut there, have a hot chocolate then take the T bar back and have another go...but think the newbies would need a few days in ski school first. Our kids loved the blue school ski school but assuming both very good and all did much the same thing in terms of learning. The final day "slalom off" was good fun and I was impressed by how far everyone had progressed after 4/5 days in the ski school there

Divekris -Thanks for the very useful tip. Two of us expect to ski in the other parts of the area while the others have lessons. Do you think we could get over and back in time to meet up for lunch?

Kevin McHale, If you mean Auffach no you won't be able to get there, back and ski in time for lunch. If you mean the other areas in Niederau i.e. up on the mountain then yes plenty of time.

More sunshine yesterday and the Ski School race was very exciting, everyone surprised themselves with new skills. Raining here in the village at the moment but snowing up the top, and as you say divekris, the Chapel run is lovely. Enjoy

Kevin McHale, we drove to Auffach (on NY day when not many others up early I suppose) and were on the gondola before 9 and then straight over to Alpbach. We were glad we chose that day as the sun shone and we saw it at its best. Had fun skiing around the various runs over there and then downloaded and had a latish lunch in what looked like quite a smart hotel in Auffach, splendidly served with soup at under 4 euros and a huge salad equally low in price. The places on the mountain looked very busy. We were back in Niederau early afternoon but it would be a waste to go over there and rush back for lunch.

Agreed on the above. Ski school runs from 10-12 for the morning session. I considered taking the bus to Auffach but realised we would just be rushing back. Ideally you could ask your newbies to have a lunch on their own one day so you take advantage of the whole ski area. We had young kids so didn't have that option really. What I did was ski the red 19 first thing (up and down in 20 odd minutes) and then spend time with the other half on the nursery slopes. We would then go up and do the blue(ish) run down to the T bar a few times and then take the gondola back down. I did take my girlfriend down the 19 on one (in)famous occasion but it was very icy/ slippy so she lost her confidence on it. I never tried the black 15 but assumed it was as icy as 19 was so gave it a miss. The red 23 was closed. But if you are good skiers and the conditions allow then you have 3 runs to play with. It's not a huge amount but it suited us for that week. Ideally you want to try and get to Auffach if you can but your friends would need to look after themselves for a lunch. We used the Schnapps hutte for lunch most days and that's 50m from the red ski school and right next to the gondola station - the food is OK/ snacky but fine for us with the kids in tow. The ski schools pile into Alpenland cafeteria and its a bit of a scrum in there so i would give that a miss personally. If you are staying in a local hotel then perhaps lunch there might be more substantial bearing in mind they have 1.5 hours for lunch.

We were incredibly lucky when we first started staying in Niederau 25 or 26 years ago with children, ours were 8, 11 and 13 I think then so not teeny weeny but certainly it was the first ski holiday for the younger two, they all seem to start so small nowadays - and we had my father with us and he couldn't really walk far and certainly not on snow or ice. We stayed in the Gasthof Brunner, now sadly closed, and he would be there at lunchtime and whatever children were around would go and find him for lunch. Not just our childre, other friends kids too and he was known as Grandpa to all of them - or Oompah to the staff of the hotel. He subbed any of them that had run out of money and also made sure that he was in the bar at 4 o'clock to hold the big table for 'evensong' as he called apres. In those days we all had ski school from 10-12 and then again from 1-3 or 2-4 so the days were quite organised.
Black 15 was ok divekris, I did it a few time, but was really sad that the Anton Graffe hutte did not appear to be open this year and that was a good stopping place on that side - not quite the same having to toddle across the road to the Wastlhof - but we made it.

I should probably have done the 15 but found the 19 challenging enough for my level. Conditions just seemed that bit harder when it was icy/ slippy. Missed having that nice top covering of pisted snow this trip and being on my own down the harder runs it wasn't quite the same. Anyway we are discussing our next trip to Austria next year!

Pam - I miss the Anton Graffe Hutte being open!
Kevin, Always find the Sports Café do a decent lunch - especially when walking with kids to and from ski school.

us Reds aren't welcome there

When we were first in Niederau there was only the red ski school. Got a bit of a shock one year when we turned up and there was a competitor. I think they used to be in a purple type colour in those days. Glad that it has turned colder again.

Chris_n, is the run down to the bottom of the Tennladen open yet? - we really missed skiing down there and having lunch at the Tennladen café at NY.

Pamski, No you can't ski all of the way to the cafe unless you adopt commando (pennine) techniques. It shouldn't take much to get it open as there are large areas of man made snow on there already.

blodyn, We'll have to start getting you HUGE amounts of beer too if it will encourage you to keep dancing. I was watching the snow on the floodlit slalom races somewhere in Austria that was showing live on Eurosport 2 last night. Hope you have a great time next week and leave some snow there for me. I'll be there on 1st Feb.

About 10cm over the whole area. The whole place looks more wintery now, sorry no pictures as I have been at Auffach / Alpbach all day and the visibility did not lend itself to photographs.
