luigi, Mollerski, thanks guys - really looking forward to it. We got it for £617 inc flights, reduced from well over £700 for 8th Feb - more than I wanted to pay really, but thought it was worth it for this location and quality of accommodation - apparently we get aperitifs, canapes and four course dinner . Just need to work out how to do the Sella Ronda from there.
As an aside, how doable is the Hidden Valley? we are both competent piste skiers, if a bit slow through moguls, and have never done off-piste. |
The Sella Ronda is accessed from the lifts I mentioned in my last post, clockwise (orange) using the Costabella chair, anti-clockwise (green) using the Ciampinoi gondola. Then just keep following the colour-coded signs (and the crowds ).
The Hidden Valley is perfectly doable on skis from Selva but is a fairly long trip and the route is a little complicated (lots of lifts going lots of different ways) between Corvara and Armentarola, just make sure you leave enough time to get back again before the lifts close, otherwise it's an expensive taxi ride. We took some confident but slowish second-weekers, they made it, but only just.
If you left Selva by 9, coffee stop above Corvara by 10, get the taxi-bus at Armentarola by 11, top of the Lagazuoi cablecar by 12, lunch at Rifugio Scotoni halfway down Hidden Valley or at Capanna Alpina near the bottom, get the horse tow by 2, Corvara by 3, Selva by 4. This would be a leisurely schedule for competent skiers, allowing for stops and some queueing. You definitely need to be back at Corvara by 3.30-3.45 to get the lifts over the Gardena pass to Selva.
You will love it, especially if the sun shines!

luigi, thanks - that really is a great help, especially knowing about the colour coded signage - just in case - how much woudl a taxi ride be if we mess it up?
is it easy to know whcih taxi-bus to get? in other words, it there only one and is it obvious where we get on and off? (sorry if all this is somewhere in the thread...)

Knowing nothing about this last year, we just turned up, realised it was actually an organised taxi up to Lagazuoi, paid our money and got on the bus. I was not aware that there was a choice of destinations. However there may be multiple vehicles as when we went up there was several taxis and minibuses and I think there was also a small-ish bus

holidayloverxx, Just head for Armentarola and follow the piste past the bottom of the drag lift and all the way to the road. There, you'll find a big pull from where the taxis/minibuses take you up to the top of the pass. There will probably be a queue - everyone is heading the same way.
Do be aware that the cable car from Falzarego up to Langazoui can be very busy - an hour's wait is not unheard of, especially if it's been closed for a few days and people haven't had the chance to go.

This is the unknown factor, my schedule above allowed for some queuing, this year we only waited about 15-20 minutes, there had been quite a few sunny days previous. In 2004, we had to wait about 40-50 mins as it was the only truly clear sunny day all week and lots of people wanted to take advantage. You'll have to adjust your speed and stops accordingly.

Does it make a difference if one gets there early ? From Arabba, for example, I imagine one could get there well before 10 a.m.

Great, beat the rush, cross the road and do the Cinque Torri/Col Gallina/Averau circuit before you go up the cablecar. If you're quick on your skis you'll do it no trouble with time to spare.
The schedule wasn't fixed, the taxi-buses will run as they fill up, the schedule was just to give an idea where you might be at what time, to leave time for getting back, Selva being that bit further than Arabba.

Yes it makes a huge difference. When we are doing it we tend to drive up with the families first thing in the morning and get on the Cable Car with no queue then when we have finished the run my mate and I get a taxi to collect the cars. By the time we collect the cars the queue is huge.
Luigi, You were talking about tricky slopes a few posts back. Are there any particularly tricky ones around Cinque Torre/Averau? My daughter's confidence took a bit of a bashing coming down from Porta Vescovo last year so want to avoid busy mogully slopes for a while!

dsoutar, Going early is definitely recommended. From Arabba, likewise, get the first lift up if you are heading for Marmolada. The approach through the valley is like ski-touring and a delight. If you leave it late, you could be doing hour+ waits for the three cable cars up Marmolada. The Lagazoi lift also gets busy later on, but remember we always do crowded half-term as we have no choice.
I'm planning to try out some of the by-ways this year, but definitely intend to return to 5 Torri and the Hidden Valley. Magic.

Just back from Selva
Very impressed with the snow conditions and the lifts, some very new Gondolas, Underground train for skiers, comfy chair lifts and even a horse drawn ski lift !
We arrived Jan 10, hadnt snowed for quite a while, pistes firm but v good, Wed night/Thur 10cm of snow in Selva, even more in Covara area. Temps avg -6 in Selva Village at 8am
As other posters have said hidden valley is unmissable and easily reachable from Selva. No steep bits to worry about if you want to go to Hiden valley, if you can ski the Dancepes red you can ski/to from Hidden valley, very nice journey. The view from the top of the cable car there is amazing
Came accross a nice idea if you need your Skis serviced. In Corvora at the bottom of Pra Longa II chair, there is a v nice Refigio for lunch, outside there is a ski service available : 15euro for edge and wax or 6euro for wax. It's s great way to have your skis serviced while you lunch. Will post some photos over next few days .
BTW someone mentioned to me Graham Bell has said that Hiden valley one of the best runs in world
Quietest sking in Corvora and Alpe De Suis (Orteisi)

Quick question : The dolmotiski ski tracer that tracks the kms you clock up while skiing. I reckon it underestimates the k's you have done. It needs to know where you ski too and does this by working out an average route you take from one lift to another (lower down)
Imagine you are based in Selva, you ski to Colfosco, that afternoon you return to your last lift in this case Dantecepies, you then take your last desent of the day : ski down the Dantecepies run, thru the nursery slopes and back to your hotel. As this is your last desent I reckon it can not add this to your daily ski k's.
What do you think ?

Been skiing in Canazei and nearby all day. Snowing heavily - very moist lower down - and poor visibility. Difficult to estimate the depth due to the wind, but must be at least 15-20cm We spent all day above Alba - busy first thing, but then everyone else seem to given up and gone home. Had a great afternoon - only blue and red runs, but *very* demanding in these conditions. Hardly anyone on the mountain this afternoon - lifties seemed a little upset when we kept coming around and waking them from their slumbers.
Black down under the cable car last thing was brilliant: piles of soft snow to blast through, with freshies on top. Only downside was the last few hundred metres when it got very wet and heavy.
Not sure were heading tomorrow. Maybe Selva if the links are open (shut today) - more trees there, but more people too.
Just looked out the balcony: stopped snowing now.

kendub, I wondered the same thing, I guess that's why they say estimated piste length. Also, when there are two piste variants, say a short, steep black and longer, winding blue, which distance does it compute? And if you traverse a piste rather than straight ski it, you cover a lot more distance on your skis. Who knows? Like riverman says, don't worry, be happy!

I reckon if you ski your last run of day and do not therefore click your skipass at the bottom, it cannot know how far you have travelled on your last run. Did the long Blue/red from Col raiser to Orteisi, hopped on a bus and went home, that run is 11km . Have to say it is still an excellent system. If there are two routes down a blue at 6 k and a black at 2km and both finish at same lift, it must take an average figure. Are there other resorts which have the same system

I can't answer this question, but I suspect that there is some kind of computer calculaton involved. I do know that after our Dolomites trip last February I was given slightly different figures for my distance skied on separate occasions on which I put my numbers in. Since I was at home in England, I was puzzled as to how I had skied a little further in Italy!
Only 3 weeks and I will be there again. And the snow looks great!

Yep just checked, 25 times up the lift at the snow park. Good weeks craic! They were a bit quieter on the bus on the way from resort compared to going to it. lol.
No beer stops on way home as we had different lifts.
March a possibility as well. Maybe Livigno on St Paddy's week.

Yep. its just below the Segg.Comici 1 chairlift.
It was good craic. Few small jumps down the middle run, then a few of them rail type things, on another run, only tried the small ones of them a couple of times as I seen a few pople falling off them and it looked sore. There was a jump over a car which was good craic. Then down the outside was a run with snowcross type park.
Yep snow and visibility was poor on a couple of days. Only done 9km one day.
Got 42km done on the last day.
