roggi, This season there is a new chairlift from the Cinque Torre area which means that you can ski to the Lagazoi cable car. The bus has been done away with.

riverman, I have been checking out the route you suggested from Campitello to the 5 Torri. I know there is a bus down to Moena. Assuming there is also one to Alleghe, then your suggested route looks like a brilliant day out. Getting into the 5 Torri system from the "back door" (a very folky single chair up to the top, as I recall) and then up to the hidden valley and back via the horse tow. Magic day out! Just need to check I can get by bus from Moena to Alleghe.
Thanks.

Chris Bish, Looking at my map if you go to Moena its the wrong direction. Is there a bus that goes in the direction of Canazei/ Penia / Passo Fedala/ Malega Ciapela

riverman, On my big map, it is a question of needing to do two sides of a square either way. The reason I thought of going down to Moena is that the road looks bigger on my map! With a really early start, you could probably get there and back via Selva and Armentrola, but going down to Alleghe would give us a new area to ski.

kendub, Cinque Tori and the Hidden valley can be reached and returned in under a day no problem. You can ski to Armentarola catch the bus from there, you can ski all the way back using the horse tow at the end of the hidden valley. I dont know where the Tre Valli is, can you give me a clue? |
He won't reasonably be able to do Tre Valli from Selva unless he has his own wheels, although it would probably be theoretically possible.
It is reached by going over to Val di Fassa, down to Moena in the valley, and then off up a side valley from there.
To do it without your own transport, you would have to ski over to Col Rodella, take the cable car down from there, catch a bus from the bottom of the cable car to Moena, then another bus from Moena up the side valley - Passo San Pelegrino.
And then he would have to the the whole thing in reverse at the end of the day.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect you would need two buses from Moena to reach Alleghe.
There are certainly buses from Moena up into the Tre Valli area, but I don't think they go on that far, and I think you would have to get another bus from Passo San Pelegrino to get down to Alleghe (and I'm not sure that there are any).

alex_heney, There is a ski bus which I have got on near Malga Ciapela which takes you down to Alleghe. I dont no where this bus starts but as Campitello is about 10/12 kilometres further up the same road I had wondered if one bus would take you from Campitello you to Alleghe.

Just booked a weeks trip to Canazei in a fortnights time then saw this post.
Is Canazei well hooked up to the Sella Ronda, superski dolomiti routes or do you have to use ski buses etc.?
I have been before but it was 12 years ago and I was not much more than a beginer so I dont really have an accurate mental picutre of the place, except for the great scenery.
Myself and ski buddy are into piste munching and getting plenty mileage under our skiis.
Cheers

Just got back from Canazei. The Belvadere Gondola drops you up onto the S/Ronda via a couple more chairs. Skiing back in is a doddle. Pop into the Montanara when skiing off of the mountain for good apres. Free ski buses run very regularly. Do the Marmolada, Seceda, The James Bond run into Ortesei and Alp di Suisi via Monte Pana (bus ride). Canazei is ok, but Selva is a better base.

scotabroad, For Sella Ronda, you take the main gondola up from Canazei and you are at the base of the Belvedere ski area, which you have to pas through whenever doing he Sella Ronda in either direction, so you couldn't be much better connected in for that.
It is also quite easy (time-wise) to head towards Arabba in the Green Sella Ronda direction, then branch off up the Marmolada, which is the highest point you can reach in the Dolomites. Or in the other direction, go off the route in Selva, with loads of runs around there.
You won't find huge numbers of different runs in the immediate locality, but there are if you are prepared to ski a good way.

kendub,
Or if you are a cheapskate like me you just skate the route back after lengthening your poles to the max. Its actually a really nice little skate though I was a little slower this year as I had my 8year old god son with me (his sister and parents chose the horses so we had to wait ages for them to turn up at the tow).
If anyone was around over new year I was one of very very few tele skiers there ( i saw only 2 others ).

Does anyone have any recent menu prices for Arabba and surrounding areas ? I'm trying to gauge whether it's worth going Half Board or Bed and Breakfast. i.e will there be a big difference
If someone could give a range of prices they have seen recently for named restaurants, that would be great. I went in March but can't remember what I paid as I paid in cash and didn't keep the receipts
There was a pizzeria just down from the main square (The Table ??) that was at the low end and the Sport Hotel at the high end but I can't remember a typical price for a meal with a drink.
Any help appreciated
Thanks

pokemon,
There were 5 of us (2 kids 3 adults) we were eating for ~£50 in the evenings slightly less on the mountain at lunch.
Evenings were typically 5 pizzas or pasta, water, 1/2 litre of wine for the adults and at one place we also got 3 sweets aswell in the £50 (48- 54 euros).
On the mountain we were typically eating 5 plates pasta or equivalent, 3 coffees/hot chocolates, 2 large beers and cost was typically 50 euros.
We also stopped for elevenses and had 4 coffees/hotchocolates, 1 small beer and 5 cakes which usually worked out at 16-22 euros.

Dave Horsley,
Cheers. There's only my wife and I, so do you think 15 euro's each for a light lunch and 30 euros each for evening is sufficient ?
FYI, my wife only drinks water/coke and I'll just have a beer.

Be very surprised if it's cheaper to NOT have half-board (in Arabba). I'm staying at the Malita which is a pretty decent hotel and it's €90 per person per day half baord and there's masses of food. Certainly one could almost dispense with lunch, or at least just have a small snack.

dsoutar, yes I agree that half board is probably going to be cheaper considering the Euro rate (although its now improving) and it's easier to budget for the holiday. After going last March to Arabba, the standard of food was pretty good everywhere and we ate at hotels that offer half board (Malita, Mesdi, Sport Hotel etc)

Am off to Arabba next week... first time skiing in Italy, let alone the Dolomites.
Will have 4.5 days on the piste... but hoping to fit in a trip to 5 torri and Hidden Valley. Been through this thread about how to get there from Sella Ronda, but i will have a hire car with me... does this make it any easier / quicker? I can't seem to googlefind any decent maps of the area, so am not sure if driving and parking is do-able.
Currently thinking of spending a day doing the circuit, a day pootling around arabba & marmolada, a day out in Cortina (if possible/easy by car) and a day to do whatever we fancy the most.

You can certainly drive and park, but if you do the Hidden Valley run, you will then need a bus or taxi to get back to your car. There are no return lifts to get you back up from the bottom of the Hidden Valley to Lagazuoi.

magic_hat, alex_heney is right. you can drive up to the Lagazuoi cable car from Arabba via Passo Campolongo, Corvara, La Villa, San Cassiano and on up to Passo Falzarego (Lagazuoi). However as you leave San Cassiano you pass Armentarola which is where the taxis for Lagazuoi run from and where the hidden valley run finishes. It may be worth you parking up there and getting the taxi (around €5/head) then when you have finished you can head back to Arabba. Alternatively it is not too difficult to ski from Arabba over to Armentarola via Passo Campolongo, Cherz, Pralongia as long as your group are happy with average reds from the top of Arabba down to Passo Campolongo and back which, if you plan to do the hidden valley etc., I guess they must be. There may be a shorter route to Passo Falzarego by road via (Livinalongo?) which is off the road to Arabba from Alleghe. So if that is the way you plan to drive up from the airport you should see it sign posted but to be honest I think it is a case of 6 and 2*3s. I hope this makes sense but let me know if you want more info.

dsoutar, unfortunately I'm there the week before you but it's only the wife and I. I'm still very fit and a "young" 40 but married
We're staying at the Chalet Barbara and eating at the Sport Hotel. Ate there last year in the a la carte restaurant and was impressed although pricey. Had a look round whilst I was there and the half board menu/food looked good. It costs 40 euro for half board if you do a DIY there, so I'm hoping it must be halfway decent.

I stayed in some private apartments right next to it in 2004, excellent location, quiet but central, literally walk 20m to the narrow piste that runs down through the village, ski down then cross the road to the Ciampinoi gondola or walk 50m the other way to the Costabella chair. Looks like it's had a facelift since also. As with all chalets, it all depends on the staff they have managed to recruit this year.
Enjoy!!

Yeah, The Soldanella is apparently now superb. We're going for it next season. I stayed there when it was run by Crystal, great position, but a bit basic.
Now it's had a total refurb and run by Total. The Chalet staff for Esprit ( Total and Esprit are the same co.) that we stayed with this Dec in Selva, said that it is now very nice.

luigi, Mollerski, thanks guys - really looking forward to it. We got it for £617 inc flights, reduced from well over £700 for 8th Feb - more than I wanted to pay really, but thought it was worth it for this location and quality of accommodation - apparently we get aperitifs, canapes and four course dinner . Just need to work out how to do the Sella Ronda from there.
As an aside, how doable is the Hidden Valley? we are both competent piste skiers, if a bit slow through moguls, and have never done off-piste.

holidayloverxx, Hidden Valley is an easy red - no problem. While there, do not miss Cinque Torri, nor for that matter, the horse tow on the way back.
Selva is on the Sella Ronda nd quite an easy day to complete the circuit. The clockwise (orange) route is supposed to be better, I believe, but I liked both ways. The only steep bit is off the top of the cable car out of Arabba, but that is wide, so not a big problem. You will adore it. Promise.
