Easyjet Baggage Rules

Idly checking these and they seemed to have changed.

1 There is a 23kg weight limit and something called 275cms - no description of what it is but airlines have never been conspicuous in their ability to explain anything

2 If I read it rightly they have dropped the combined weight limit of checked bag and ski bag so if your main case was overweight it was combined with the weight of the ski bag up to 32kgs? So you now have to purchase extra weght if you go over 23kgs on checked bag.

If anyone has a clue what the 275 cms is I would love to know and is my interpretation of the new rules correct?

I believe the 275cm refers to the maximum combined dimensions of the bag, ie length + depth + width < 275cm

Ah the first Easyjet baggage thread of the season?

Yes the 275cm is the limit of the bags combined height+length+width.

A checked bag can be bought starting at 15kg or 23kg then increments of 3kg can be bought up to a max of 32kg per bag unit.

The small sports equipment under which skis and boots fall is 20kg. I think you must buy this if bringing skis as despite ski bags usually falling under the 275cm limit they insist you buy small sports, as funny enough it costs more for less weight than a 23kg bag. But note its for skis (supposed to be one pair) AND boots, the boots can be packed into another (reasonably sized?) bag so you get the volume of 2 bags.

Some comments on here have said that you can take skis under the large sports 32kg purchase but I dont think this is normally allowed.

I think you can pool the total weight you buy over the number if bag units you buy as long as no one bag is over 32kg.

I haven't travelled this season so some of this is prior experience, some base on reading their rules for this year so any confirmation by someone who has gone this year already would be good, although we are off this weekend with them.

Thats good as long as it includes pooling over the ski bag as I have a very heavy pair of skis and bag.

Yes, I travelled to the PSB and paid for 23kg and a 20kg ski bag, so a total of 43kg. My luggage was 25kg but no problem with pooling as both only came to about 35kg.

@ster, I’ve taken skis as large sports equipment but you have to say that they’re a hanglider or something. Annoyingly EJ say that if you’re skis are over 20kg then you’re supposed to book skis and normal hold luggage, which is stupid expensive. And although you can add weight in 3kg increments to a normal hold bag, you can’t do this for sports equipment.

takes four pairs of ski boots, each in individual boot bags with their respective owners helmets, back protectors and gloves. The whole lot for us (2 adults, 2 kids) weighs about 20kg, and fits in the automated bag drop machine thing that a certain orange airline uses at Gatwick.

We book it on as an ordinary 23kg hold bag. It saves significant hassle, money, time etc, and neatly circumvents the various ways that airlines try to charge you extra for carrying “sports equipment”. We’ve used it for about six trips now - to Innsbruck, Turin and Geneva - and never had any problems.

Easy Jet themselves seems in a muddle over this. For EZY flights between LGW and GVA earlier this month I booked a hold bag of 23kg. When I booked I checked with their online chat that a bag with total dimensions of 190 x 35 x 35 (ie a "cargo" ski bag) carrying skis and clothes could be carried as part of this allowance. They confirmed it could.

When I arrived at LGW checkin at the crack of sparrows f**t, the check in machine confirmed my bag weighed under 21kg but still stamped its electronic foot and told me to wait for assistance. A jobsworth duly arrived who told me this was sports equipment and would not issue a baggage tag until I parted with £47, in spite of me showing him the transcript of the confirmation I had received when booking. On the return from GVA the human at the check in desk did not query the bag at all. I complained to EJ and got confirmation that the £47 would be refunded, which it duly has been. However, they also said that I should have booked my bag as sports equipment in the first place, nothwithstanding that the hold bag presented was well within the size and weight limits indicated in their baggage policy. I understand that airlines have to have baggage limits but providing a bag is within these and does not contain any item prohibited for safety reasons, what it contains should be none of their concern.

The underlying issue here is one of the airlines own making. They would like to charge you more for a size compliant bag containing 20kg of sports equipment than the same bag containing 20kg of normal clothing/footwear etc. I can see the charging case for unusually sized items like skis & bikes that may require special handling, but for ski boots/helmets/clothing in a size compliant bag - no way. A degree of polite but determined resistance therefore feels entirely justifiable. The best way is always to fly under the radar (so to speak). The automated bag drop machines are your friend here. Also bags with sports "branding" obscured, perhaps by protective tape. If your bag meets the size and weight requirements then I don't see how/why you'll be challenged. If you are, then remember that this isn't a security issue - no matter how airline staff might choose to present it. If asked, I would simply tell them that the bag contains clothing and footwear.

As Thorney's post above shows, they are only able to levy the extra charges with your consent. Don't give it!

Do you pad it out with clothes? I'd be concerned about packing my helmet as hold luggage personally. I hate the fact I can't get my boots into hand luggage (though think I'm going to try this year, with them just over my shoulder)

Helmet in each boot bag - they fit perfectly facing the top clips with goggles tucked inside and gloves over the top. I think that the combined padding of the boot bags plus the cargo bag (the POC bag linked is padded itself) is more than adequate, although I did place the kids back protectors side by side on top for extra protection. With any luggage - checked or unchecked - there is some residual risk of damage. If you can’t accept this then flying private is the only answer..! As I said, we’ve made at least six trips (eg 12 flights) with no issues.

I think it was because it detected that the bag was longer than normal as it extended beyond the conveyor. I initially assumed that this would simply mean that I had to take it to the outsize baggage conveyor as per a normal manned check in, until the attendant claimed it was because it was unbooked "sports equipment". Given the contradictory advice I was given by both EJ and the contrasting stance of the check in staff at LGW and GVA I am not sure what lesson can be learned from my experience, other than be prepared for hassle and then to fight your corner.

You can get bags designed for this very purpose that carry a pair of boots "tetrus" style in a bag that is within the normal carry on limits.

@Thorney, Thanks for that reply. Could you have taken it straight to oversize without putting it on the conveyor I wonder.

@cad99uk, you need the luggage label from your carrier before you go to oversized luggage. To get the label EJ require you to use their machine, which requires you to place your bag on the conveyor for weighing and (I assume) a size check. The key is to use a bag that fits, and to make sure it is under the weight limit.

Seems to depend where you are. Checked in with small sports for a ski and boot bag this morning at Gatwick. The machine which must be obeyed did not want to weigh either, it just printed out the labels and both went to oversized. It weighed both other hold bags though.

I have a dakine boot & helmet rucksack
Never had a carry on issue using it. I usually put my socks, boots, gloves, wooly hat, wrist guards & padded shorts in with it.
Dimensions when packed out are 48 x 36 x 33cm
So only 1 dimension is slightly over, but the bag is never fully packed out.

Cheap n' cheerful. By standing the boots next to each other but slightly offset (to keep the width within limits) there is enough space to get a helmet (with goggles inside) in front of them and other bits and bobs in the top

Interesting experience at Verona on our way back. The two hold bags and the boot bag (being part of the small sports allowance) were all weighed, tagged and taken at the normal bag drop. When it came to the ski bag, the nice lady just asked me how much I thought it weighed, I thought it weighed under the allowance. She printed the tag and escorted me to the oversized conveyor. That was that.

If using the automated checkin scales, the ski bag hangs over the side. A bit of judicious manipulation with a foot can result in the scales showing lighter than actual weight.

Found this out by accident last year. when I was apparently 2kg overweight, took some trainers and stuff out into hand luggage. weighed the ski bag again and it showed more Puzzled . Weighed it again with my foot under a corner and reduced it by 3kg. Very Happy

Put the stuff back into the ski bag on the way to oversized bag drop. wink Very Happy

I've booked in my snowboard bag as standard hold luggage with Easyjet for the past 3 years (3 flights from Gatwick and 2 from Edinburgh) each time the bag had board, boots and some clothes padding the board. The rest of my clothes and helmet went in my cabin bag.

For both flights from Edinburgh and all return flights (Grenoble and Geneva) nothing has been said during check in. Without fail each flight from Gatwick i'll be challenged in the same way @Thorney was. After the first time of spending too long arguing/debating their baggage policy and how little it matters what I've got in the bag I now have their website up on my phone and just tell them to read it before arguing with me. So far the reason why I should pay more have included, insurance (I have my own which doesn't change based on what I check in my bag as thanks), health and safety (it's going on the plane anyway?) and dimensions (which usually involves me feeling like I'm trying to teach maths to an infant schooler whilst explaining how they've worded the dimensions requirements in their policy).

I've not had to pay each time and there's no way we should have to but it's all a bit of a headache knowing it will happen each time but just at Gatwick!
