nozawaonsen, and other gurus, if you look at 'snow-map' at top of p 14, which seems somehow live in that it updates itself, is it showing the total predicted snowfall btwn now and the date shown (currently 2 Dec) or is it predicting what is going to dump down on the day of 2 Dec itself?
By the way, a pause in snowfall has been ordered for 1 Dec for us to safely arrive in Tignes, then let the dumping re-commence

DoubleBombardino, it's updating because I've been updating it. It's the accumulated weight of snow for the next 180 hours.

Nozawaonsen I am clueless to when and we're the snow is predicted to fall,I'm of to avoriaz on the 15th dec,is there any snow going that way

tman80, No doubt the great man will be along in due course with the definitive answer but I think the forecast is for a storm to come in mid-week next week and although there's considerable doubt about how much snow will make it over the main Alpine ridge and up to places like the PdeS, cold temps are sure to follow which will allow them to fire up the snow cannon(s) at least

tman80, yes I would expect Avoriaz to get a reasonable amount during the coming week 30-40cms. And as red 27 says it currently looks like December will start cold so there's a good chance of further snowfall too.
The big snow looks like falling further south.
Here's SLF Sunday afternoon update.
Marked increase in avalanche danger especially in southern regions
http://www.slf.ch/lawineninfo/lawinenbulletin/nationale_lawinenbulletins/index_EN
"Between Monday morning and Tuesday evening above approximately 2200 m on the southern flank of the Alps excluding Münstertal and the Upper Valais sector of the Main Alpine Ridge 40 to 60 cm of snowfall is anticipated, from place to place as much as 80 cm of new fallen snow. In the remaining parts of the Main Alpine Ridge as well as in the Vaud and Fribourg Alps, and in the Upper Engadine, 20 to 40 cm of fresh fallen snow is expected, elsewhere less. The snowfall level will be at 1300 to 1800 m..."
"Outlook
On Wednesday, 28 November, continued heavy snowfall is anticipated in southern regions and the avalanche danger will increase still a bit further. On Thursday, 29 November in northern regions, snowfall down to low altitudes is expected. The avalanche danger will increase somewhat in northern regions."

nozawaonsen, that's showing a fair bit of snow in the UK, would you say that is for low lying ground?? If so best get my snow tyres on!!

Normal practice, predict loads, people keep looking then down grade amount once we have all bought tee shirts and clothes.
Just divide by 2 to make accurate-ish.
I do look at it every day mind.

Charts are looking pretty cold and snowy for high ground in the UK for sure (which I'm pleased about obviously) but I think the jury is still out on how marginal it is for lower ground, at least in terms of snow. Things are likely set for it to get colder for sure however with the predicted northern blocking we could be talking in terms of a December 2010 scenario down to low level but as ever it's not written in stone and won't be for a while yet.
At least the airports are a bit more prepared now so fingers crossed if you're flying out to the Alps

I love the way people ascribe personal characteristics (usually malevolent) to the snow-forecast algorithms. We all lose our cool, faced with forecasts at this time of year.

nozawaonsen, fair point and we seem to have a wobble in the latest outputs anyway, apart from the UKMO which is still going for very cold.

Heavy snow above 2000m this morning here in the central Pyrenees, snow line falling rapidly so should see some good accumulations around 1600m by tonight and 1200m tomorrow.
Colder weather and snow is forecast for the rest of the week.

looks like the mistral wind is blowing it further east for the biggest dump........Swiss resorts look to be the biggest benefactors.
but decent amounts for an early storm

Does this mean snow for the lesser known Piemonte resorts?
Mondole and Limone Piemonte areas? |
Think you'll be OK. There's a weather warning from Civil Protection out for the Valle d'Aosta, and the Pila resort site seems to be forecasting more than a metre (actually 1.5m, but take these things with a pinch of salt)!
http://www.regione.vda.it/territorio/CentroFunzionale/Dati/Avviso_meteo.pdf
They'll no doubt be updating the avalanche bulletins for the area if we get that heavy a dump:
http://appweb.regione.vda.it/DBWeb/bollnivometeo/bollnivometeo.nsf/vista_i/$first?OpenDocument&L=_i
EDIT: I should add that you'll see from the first map that the snow is heavier in the south-east part of the region. Limone is a bit low at resort level but there's certainly a fair bit of rain and snow forecast for there too.

Well, if there's no El Nino or La Nina this year it generally means avg snow falls for the PNW. So 450 - 500 inches of snow is not a bad year.
Looking at the Zermatt cams, and not much to see, they seem to have been plastered with some type of wet sticky substance...

12z looking better after a depressingly dry 06z.

I know we have to take Snow Forecast with barrels full of salt, but it's now forecasting about 70cms of snow for Val d'Isere in the next three days and plummeting temperatures. Minus 30 on Saturday night, really!?
Let's hope they're somewhere near right.

so anyone out in the various resorts want to tell us if the white stuff has started falling yet, could be a stellar couple of days to set the season off.

you can be sure that once it starts falling, the airwaves will be buzzing. No news means no snow worth shouting about. But reports probably on the appropriate resort threads.

kitenski, Is the VDI webcam still from close-of-play yesterday? I got caught out earlier looking at knee deep snow in one place, and grassy fields about 10km away.
It was just a webcam being lazy to update

kitenski, that's well weird how it can differ just from valley to valley isn't it. The webcam at Manigod village (approx 900m) is really snowy this morning.
Frankly I'd expect Val d'Isere to outperform it!
