A word of warning re Corvara, I'd thoroughly recommend the village, and thoroughly NOT recommend the Hotel Greif. Only hotel in Italy I've stayed in where the menu is full of warnings that the food has previously been frozen.
|
this is a standard legal requirement in Italy and is very common even in good restaurants it just gives them the legal option of using frozen options. Often used for fish.

Thanks @olderscot. I did search the main review sites last night but not SH. I’ll take a look later.
@WoottonBecs, good to know, thank you. I am toying with the idea of booking directly and maybe hiring a car. I haven’t done any research yet, so not sure if there are any easy transfer options.

We went down the package route purely because of ease of transfers. Neither of us wanted to drive, so car hire was out. We did Crystal this year (to Arabba) and Selva last year (Inghams) and both were great.

@denfinella, lol, gotta love the low season Italian stock
FWIW I coughed up for a 4wd with winter tyres recently, think it was about €200, might be worth it for peace of mind?
Although the snow line could be high so maybe you'll be fine if you pick your trips

Woke up to a light dusting of snow in San Cassiano this morning. Headed to Arabba through cloud but oh my, that run back down from the very top made it all worthwhile!!

You can ski to the lovely blues in Corvara very easily from either Selva or Arabba (if that gives you more accommodation options).
|
I have to admit I do not like the blue run down the back of Monte Cherz that so many people take to get across to Alta Badia from Arabba / Boe. There's nothing difficult with the slope itself, but it's always so cut up if the weather is warm that I have to say I think it's the worst slope in the whole region. I guess it just can't cope with the number of people heading over that way.

Do you mean the blue down to Campolongo pass or down to the Vizza chair?

It looks like the upper part of 8 where it starts from Pralongia. Sure that's the Pralongia II chair you can see on the left. Wind can blow strong around there so could have caused huge drifts.

@jimmybog, quite likely :: thats not a drift though ; it was like that everywhere !!
I think this is going up the La vizza chair

Wow!! Not often that happens in the Dolomites. It's definately the top part of piste 8 below Pralongia. Just watching video of that run. Looks like it was taken just after you turn left off instead of continuing onto 9A.

Very tempted by Alta Badia for w/c March 16th. Forecast looks very good indeed, but this would be our first trip. Corvara looks ideal as my wife likes gentle slopes. Anybody stayed in TH CORVARA GREIF HOTEL? I fancy a package, and this is the only hotel Crystal offer. |
We arrive at the Hotel Greif this coming Saturday. I’ve become fussy over the years, I noticed it has largely decent TripAdvisor reviews.
I’ll post in this thread my initial experiences.

I was in Arabba the week after the Birthday Bash when half the complement could only get as far as Alleghe (and the rest is history !!)
If you are curious, have a look at this thread and scroll down to the post from @andyman - it looks like to be the same chair before the side piste was tracked out....

They must have shut the lifts as no one on the webcams. Same at Piz Sorega and Seiser Alm.

Snowing heavily in San Cassiano this morning. Local hotel minibus had to stop to put chains on to get up the hill. Think we might wait for the roads to be cleared before we head up to Piz Sorega. If we head up!

The one down the back of the mountain that runs alongside the Viazza chair. Both the runs down to Campolongo are lovely and its odd that they're always in great condition while the one down the other side is so rubbish. Maybe it's just when it's warm that it gets so cut up.

And just a heads up to anyone heading for Venice airport tomorrow morning. We had similar conditions a couple of weeks ago, leaving at 8am, and had to put the snow socks on the hire car to get over the Passo Falzarego to Cortina. If you're going over any of the passes early on then make sure you allow a bit of extra time and know how to use the chains or socks.
Anyone with winter tyres seemed fine but we didn't have them on our hire car and the snow socks that came with it worked great and were really easy to put on.

Thanks olderscot. Funnily enough, we found that run fairly quiet and in good condition. Must have just been good timing or luck on our side. As for the vizza chair, perfect opportunity to recuperate for a while as its so long and slow

It is exciting but freezing level seems to be about 2000m so could be problematic...

@melbouch, wepowder is the site. If there's 161m forecast for Malga Ciapela, Selva should get a decent amount.

Snow limit is around 1200m in Folgaria today, so should be similar or a bit lower for most of the SW Dolomites (Val di Fiemme / Val Gardena etc.).

Lots of lifts closed today in Marmolada/Arabba and the Lagazuoi tram is closed. Worries me a bit as I’m staying at Lagazuoi Tuesday night. What happens in this case? Do they ferry guests up or do I skin up? Anyone know? This trip is going to be a lot different than the blue sky days of previous visits!

It looks to me like the high wind of today is going to die down in the coming days - it will be the wind causing the closures around Arabba.
So I think the chances of Lagazuoi being closed on Tuesday looks small. Although as you say the coming week (when I'm out as well ) does not look like a normal sunny Dolomites week which wil upset my fellow travellers.
As to what happens if the Lagazuoi cablecar is actually closed on Tuesday - I'm sorry I cannot help with that. I'd have thought there is a fair chance of ferry up on skidoo or their own small snowcat.

@Alchemist, you're back!
You'll be delighted to know I did a trip recently inspired by your lockdown posts. If you get stuck there is a nice refuge just down from the lift up the Lagazuoi that I stayed in on my trip, I can't remember the name but could find it for you if need be. I skied to it from the front run off Lagazuoi (not the hidden valley) so you could definitely get there easily enough. It also isn't busy so I doubt you'd need a reservation, and I think those places have to take people in if they're stuck.
Let us know how the Lagazuoi stay goes. The couloirs will probably be in all time condition after these storms pass through?

[quote="8611"]@Alchemist, you're back!
Hi @8611! That is wonderful to hear that you got out there! My 2020 trip was epic in many ways. I did another ski safari in 2022, all on piste as the snow levels were low, but it was heavenly. This trip will be different still. We'll see how high the avalanche danger is. At present I'm trying to make alternative plans in case I can't get to the rifugios. I'll be skiing from Suisi to rifugio Baita Cuz in Val di Fazza for night one on Monday. That's a beautiful ski - I did the same in 2022. Then off to Lagazuoi and nearby Averau after that. Then I'm taking the ski bus to Pescul and staying at hotel Orso Grigio (no on mountain rifugios over there). Then am traveling to Marmolada and was hoping to stay at Des Alpes on the Sella Ronda but they are booked so I'm staying in Campitello di Fassa at Hotel Ramon. Then skiing back to Suisi the last day. If conditions allow, I'll definitely ski off piste from the Pordoi bubble and there is a nice run off Lagazuoi too. Wish me luck and let's hope for mild winds!
