Jon Ford, have a great time. Ops Director at 1950 told me tonight that temps tomorrow will be even lower than today... from -23 down to -30C overnight.
Brrr.
jac@pandy, Roulles - depends (wow, that was helpful... ). The middle section - ie from blue road down to blue road - is often one long mogul field but sometimes is bashed on one side. I guess it all depends on timing! But wouldn't be my first choice mogul field. Although Rob@rar likes it!
Refuge can have lumps the size of small Volkswagens, although tbh it isn't that long. Mrs Roll's favourite run.
Tuffes has a number of 'bail' options - the slalom course for example, if the going get's really tough or go sideways back onto Plagnettes, and would probably be a reasonable place to start. Does however tend to get arrhythmic, as a lot of not so good bumpers use it, and "les bosses" get all out of shape (and there's a few terrain changes too).
If Arondlieres isn't pisted (from top of Varet, and that's after skiing back past the cable car, NOT down the front facing Lanches or Cretes! which are both for your more serious bump aficionados) that's quite a nice bumpy section for the first couple hundred metres, and then eases out.
Or go for a private lesson and say "I'd like to learn bumps". Mrs AR did that, and came back loving them - having done a progression through on-piste, on piste steep, off piste, off piste steep and off piste couloir (for those that know it, down the face from Bois de l'Ours to Lac).

Today we went over to play in the Bellecote Bowl of La Plagne all day and then return via the North Face. We managed to stay above the clouds until our return to Nancroix and back to Arc 1600 in the afternoon. Loads of powder and mostly untracked snow all day. Did not take many pics today, it was just to cold to take my gloves off. But will post the best of what I did take shortly in the Feb 2012 Album on my facebook page.
The snow is still in great condition on and off piste due to the very cold temps. It was really cold today. The clouds hung around the valleys all day and a little snow fell lower down. Above 2000m it was sunny most of the day, but the wind chill was up at -20degrees most of the day. I had to wear double liners in my gloves and my fingers just about stayed warm. My feet froze even with my boot covers.
If you are coming out this weekend. It is still snowing lightly right now and the roads are quite difficult. You will need winter gear to get up to resort right now. Hope all those coming out have a good holiday! If anyone wants to meet up send me a PM.
This is what Les Arcs looked like most of the day.
(Les Arcs is in the backround. Looking from left to right. The Aiguille Grive, Top of Transarc, Grand Col area and Aiguille Rouge. Mount Pourri ridge on the right.)

The latest news for today it IT IS VERY COLD out there!!!
From my Les Arcs Winter facebook page update this morning.
"The chill factor on the chairs is expected reach -25 at least today higher on the mountain. Right now it is snowing again this morning low down and is settling on the roads. The vis is poor and it looks like the low cloud is here to stay for a while. It is very cold and a light wind is blowing.
However higher on the mountains above 2000m the sun is shinning, but it is extremely cold. There is a sea of clouds covering the valley. The low cloud will sometimes produce a little snow (1-3 cm). The wind is light, becoming stronger during the day. The chill factor will create a very cold atmosphere. Tomorrow is expected to be fair condition but still very difficult in the mountains (extreme in the high mountains with wind gusts to 80 km / h). The cold is intense in the morning and then fades considerably in the afternoon. The NE wind blows stronger (gusts 20-50 km / h to 2500m)." ( Bourg French meteo)

Arctic Roll, think I'll send OH to try out Refuge while I peer out over Tuffes again and pluck up courage! (OH being determined to crack blacks whether they be mogulled or not. He's a Skoda driver so I'm sure he can cope with Volkswagens - not!). Useful info, thanks.
By the way, when we were out in January we did have a private lesson with my sister and specifically asked for some small bumps. This with ESF over in Plan Peisey. However, instructor couldn't really think of any over that way and eventually she just took us off piste for a bit (having checked us out with some drills first). It was a bit bumpy, but she didn't really give us any specific technique - it seemed to be - just more of the same but off piste. I've learnt far more checking out the moguls threads on this forum (mind you, not tried to put any tips into practice yet... ) Maybe we were just unlucky a) with instructor or b) lack of bumps in that area at the time.

Apparently there was a sign at the Transarc mid-station saying it was -26 at 09.30 this morning.
I ventured up the Vallandry lift today to meet friends for lunch at Aux Enfants Terrible (ex Poudreuse). Having assured me they would slow it when I got to the top for me to get off (still on crutches & in leg brace), they didnt, so had to jump off & run Jarred poor knee again, but lunch was excellent - athough more than I would normally want at lunchtime.

Bought my boot heaters/driers this year before going to Les Arcs they were the best buy ever, got up in morning boots dry and warm. They are portable and weigh virtually nothing.

Update from les arcs via free hotel wiFi. Les arcs is amazing. Without question the best resort I've skiid. The conditions r fantastic. Stayed on piste. No ice or bad patches. Snow flying up on every turn. Snow covered trees running towards la plagne. V picturesque. Views are great. Haven't done Aug rouge yet but planning some photos and runs Wednesday. We've been mainly sticking to cruising blues which is so chilled out as runs are empty. Great wide runs. Weather is cold but don't feel it when skiing. Gets cold on the slower long chair lifts and if u need to take gloves off. Going la plagne tomorrow. 1950 is lovely resort. Did marshmellows round fire pit and watched Ice sculpture before. Nite skiing tomorrow. Legs are killing today and luke warm pools & Jacuzzis didn't help but overall had amazing first 2 days. Looking forward to ice grotto, toboggan run (which is massive) and trying luck at air bag. Sorry no photos but on phone and.sorry no details about runs done (dont know them) but if you are coming out soon you will hzvd great time. (quite expensive though...14euros for burger n chips on slopes and average 5.50euros per pjnt. Spar not bad prices but not cheapest but easier than going bourg sm. Try go update in few days.

Despite coming here for years now, I have just found a beautiful walk from Vallandry to Les Arcs 1800 It is an access road that they keep open for emergency vehicles only, & is safer for pedestrians (no nasty skiers or snowboarders ) & quicker than Foret. OH told me about it, after he crossed it while skiing all the way down to Landry the other day - a first for him too
Beautiful day again here - still cold

Had great day today over in la plagne. Much colder than les arcs. Runs were great. Went through all the blue forest runs. V picturesque. Managed to catch some of the jumpers on the air bag which always funny to watch. Will try it soon.... Only managed to get to bellecotte. Can't believe how much piste there is between 1950 & la plagne. The white stuff is everywhere. Did some nite skiing before which was an adventure. Started to snow a tiny bit. Forecasted for tomorrow so c what happens. Word of advice-buy a balaclava. It's cold on lifts without one.

Jon Ford, glad you are enjoying it. Suggest steam rooms rather than "lukewarmtubs" for muscle recovery. We have been having a long running battle with, well, everyone, over responsibility for temp. Hoteliers, construction company, building co-props, Intrawest, Savoie H&S, everyone points the finger elsewhere.
I mean, it can be OK, but just as long as you don't expect to sit out there for a long time!

Woke up this morning - lulled into false sense of composure - about ten degrees warmer than the last few days, only -5degreesC on balcony at 8.30 am. Then I overheard head pisteur on Les Arcs radio saying that it would be absolute max.-10C, so I removed a few layers of thermals, with relief, after the past few days' crazy temps.
It wasn't too bad at first, then we went up Transarc to 2000 bowl. Jeez, the wind hit me with an icy blast , blowing straight up from Arc 2000 village, under Arcabulle chair. For those who have experienced it in Scotland, it was just like standing at top of White Lady Tow, at 10 am on a breezy morning, looking at the icy moguls, and ducking under the wind blown hail. So back we went to the 1800 side - peace and quiet, very little wind. you could not believe the difference. So there we stayed for the rest of the day!
When we returned home,it was actually +5 C. Is spring around the corner? I think not...

Mountain Haddock Looking forward to trying the small path to 1600 that goes off it, when I'm back in March & hopefully a bit more mobile
Well, its been a lovely but very different 12 days here for me with no skiing. Curtains made, apartment cleaned to within an inch of its life, but fantastic walks - helped by gorgeous weather & winter crutches I've also enjoyed the spa at the The Vanoise Hotel - a lovely quiet pool & jacuzzi, & probably the nicest hamam I've ever experienced. Also a small gym. So for 15euros a time, you can use the lot, if you're not staying there
Its been much warmer down here - +4 this afternoon on the balcony, so positively tropical, but then I was sheltered from the wind fj. It looked like the docs were busy though

I know it's not on snow conditions - but this seems the most Les Arcs oriented forum - we're coming out to 2000 in 4 weeks and need to get to Vallandry for lessons. I think I can see how to get there from the piste map, but would be grateful for confirmation: 2000 - Vallee de l'Arc - Comborciere lift - Belvedere - Foret - Vallandry (???)
Really not sure on return route. Can anyone kindly advise? We obviously would ask when we get there, but will not have much time to find out if we're not to miss the first lesson. I'm sure it will all become obvious - but . . . . Thanks in advance.

genepi, very many thanks for advice on return route & welcome to forum. - Yep New Gen - hope they're as good as I've read - will enjoy nonetheless.
thefatcontroller, Gulp (again) I WAS worried (about route) - then I was happy (following advice) - now I'm TERRIFIED!! No, not really - I'm sure the 'journey' will be a good warm-up & opportunity for practice. I realise it's a long way, but keen to improve technically & these boys seem to have a good reputation(?) Thanks again for your advice.
