Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Guys, i'm interested in snowboarding in Lech for the first time around 1st week of april too but beginning to consider rebooking for Hintertux or Stubai. My friend is there right now and he says that conditions are poor, pistes are narrow and moguls are everywhere, and because of the sun exposure you have approx 2-3 hours of skiing per day cause in the slush that starts around noon only crazy people would try to ride. He's just made an instructor so i trust him to some extent on the assesment, and would not want to jeopardize my vacations. What say you, should i rebook for a glacier right now?

Still snowing... It's been rain/sleet/snow in the St. Anton village.. currently snowing but its been constantly been snowing in St. Christoph and higher. Did some off-piste yesterday and the snowpack was very dodgy... was lucky to walk away unscathed from a couple slabs we set off.. and saw pretty big avalanche debris down Galzig bachseite.

The whole of Valluga/Schindlergrat was closed yesterday due to avalanche risk...

It's easily been 45cm of fresh snow on the top. Stay safe!

Snowing in Lech at the moment and has been all day. As said, off piste is rather dodgy, and the snow that is falling is quite wet. Pistes in Lech yesterday were nice higher up, but still slushy in places lower down. Less prone to getting mogully at the moment as the pistes aren't as busy as they have been, but again some sections do seem to get quite bad. The snow over the past few days has helped to cover over some of the thinner patches on the piste but I did find that in some places the grass was just starting to peek thru.

Don't get me wrong, i'm all for skiing in Lech just dont want to end up turning up there and immediately driving to Stubai because of lack of snow and grass peeking through the pistes.
I've never been there but how good are they with artificial snow production?

I don't recall seeing a single snow cannon at Lech or Zuers either for that matter. Could be wrong though.

Really?? A quick google

Snowmaking :- Lech is able to augment natural snow, on 105km of ski runs, with 96 Snow Cannons.

But given the warm temps forecast they ain't going to be running them!!

Finally did Valluga descent today.. did the Valluga West one, and the snow was actually really nice and it's not really tracked out.. only a couple dozen people had done it before.. Valluga North looked a bit more tracked out but still some fresh snow to find in between tracks. The hike up was a bit nerve racking though..

Have definitely seen the cannons on just outside the rud alpe and around oberlech - both on webcams at start of season. (there's also some on the rodelbahn Very Happy )

If you are in the Arlberg on Sunday as well as counting snow cannons you could also catch HMBC playing Rendl.

Vorarlberg band who made it big (well in Austria) with song about struggling home after a few drinks too many...

For folks who do not know the band.

This is sung with a very strong Voralburger dialect which even Germans have some difficulty understanding.

Also, most areas have pretty tight restirctions on using snow canons late in the season. I'm sure there exceptions, but in Salzburgland, for example, resorts are not supposed to use snowmaking after the end of February.

stanton, I was wondering whether you could let me know if I've missed any 'notable' off piste routes.. Valluga, Hinterer Rendl, Sonnenkopf-Langen, Stuben-Langen, all the Schindlergrat/Albona stuff. Touring stuff aside (I've done Hochkarspitze and Kleine Sulmspitze.. any decent places?).. I'm just wondering if there's still something I've managed to miss Smile I think the only one I've missed is the run into St. Christoph from Stuben.

Timmaah... do you have Andy Thurner's 2 excellent books on off-piste / touring in the Arlberg?

stanton, what would best peak to go from? Kreuzjochspitze? Or do the easier tour and go to Gamskarspitze and off the back to Petteneu?

ulmerhutte, I do have his touring one, but not the off-piste one. One I have my eyes set on next is the tour into verwall.

that's the bottom ones.. (except Valfaegehr which shuts at 4.20) and the top ones shut at 4.. so you would really only be able to do 1 run. Or go to Lech.. where the lifts shut at 5... but that would be a hassle for just an hour.

Well this is weird... it's snowing from St. Christoph upwards, raining from Zamermoos below.. and nothing in the village. However.. freezing level is just above Galzig so the snow isn't settling yet, but it was snowing fairly hard in St. Christoph.

kitenski, we've had some really warm days, with 12°C in the village, but I'm still surprised the village runs are still open. The bottom part of the resort is slush mogul heaven, however... you can still get some good snow conditions - you just have to go higher up. Interestingly enough, Sonnenkopf is holding up the best in my opinion (not skied Stuben in a week but I would imagine that is better). There was no slush in Sonnenkopf on the super warm days and all the runs (but the village ones) are open.. So that's definitely worth a visit.

It's meant to snow/rain again next week.. it is April soon though, so no complaints.

Short answer: Skiing is still good high up, slushy moguls at bottom.

The village runs to Galzigbahn stay open till the end of the season, even if it is just a small strip Very Happy

The run to Nasserein they also try to keep open till the end but they sometimes struggle.

There are the obvious ones next to the piste and ski route. Then there's a few ones which require ski touring, which take you down into the valley.. but not sure where it ends up in the Valley as I have yet to do them.

There is also a good one off the back of Glatingrat; stanton will (rightfully so) strongly suggest a guide.. I did it a few days ago (without one) and I had to end up jumping over streams, and using my jump turns down a 50° snowed over narrow stream.. but! If you stay to the hard left, you should be fine.. You (apparently - I went right so this is just what I've heard) do end up having to cross a river (if you take the route back to Sonnenkopf, the other route takes you to Langen...or Klosterle (the one I did) ).

Lots of parenthesis'....

I would not ski off piste for your first time at Sonnenkopf without someone/guide who knows the terrain. There are some routes down to Langen but Im not sure if there anygood right now due to lack of snow.

Last I heard The KK is closing for the season on April 10th.

Taps Coyotes stays open till Easter Monday even if there is no snow to ski to it. You just walk up the street from KaminStube

Heustadl normally finishes early April.

Moose,Griabli stays open till the end.
